Road trips on bikes just hit different compared to your usual bus and car rides. It can be challenging and even arduous due to the long journey, but we will have everything prepared for you. From an SUV support, emergency rations and first-aid kits, to the fuel fee for the entire trip, you’ll get to enjoy the best part minus the annoying itti-bitties that you have to look out for. Your ride is going to be the Royal Enfield Himalaya, a fitting ride for trip through the tallest mountain range in the world. After settling in your hotel room, ride from Leh to Shanti Stupa, a Buddhist peace stupa that was enshrined by the 14th Dalai Lama himself. Then to Leh Palace, a gorgeous royal home that had to be abandoned by its inhabitants during Dogra’s invasion. The second day will be a long ride as we hit one of the world’s highest road, the Kargil Highway, with the River Indus on our side. Less than 4 hours later, we’ll be at the Hall of Fame, a museum dedicated for the Indian Army after the Indo-Pak wars. Ride on to the Magnetic Hill which might be less tiring than you expect as your ride slowly makes its way up with ignition off! As we leave the hill, we’ll be arriving at the gorgeous Confluence of Zanskar and Indus Rivers. This place easily snags the crown of the road trip for Sham Valley as you get an amazing view of the Nimmu Valley and the rivers. You can say your thanks and pray at the Gurudwara Patthar Sahibp, which is our next destination from the confluence. Then to the monastery of Alchi Gompa by the Tibetan Buddhists and enjoy the calming atmosphere while strolling along the gallery that houses ancient paintings. Likir Monastery is another in the list with just equally historical significance as it dated back to the 11th century. For the third day, we’ll off to Nubra Valley with a lifetime ride through the world’s highest drivable road of Khardung La at over 5,600m altitude. As we make our way to Hunder Village, you’ll see an out-of-this-world view that can’t be seen elsewhere and totally unforgettable. We head to Turtuk for the 16th Century Mosque which preserves such distinct architectural features along with other old ruins and buildings such as the Ruined Fort of Dhards and Monastery. By the fifth day, we’ll be heading to our next destination, Pangong Lake, which is around 4,350m above sea level. The road maybe challenging depending on the weather, but we’ll always have your back! We ride back to Leh via Changla Pass which is a famous part of the silk road and an archaeological site of dinosaur remains at the same time. Stop at one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, Hemis Gompa. Be awestruck at the sight of Thiksey Monastery which isn’t far from Hemis. Then take in the amazing architecture of Shey Palace & Monastery before finally reaching the 3 Idiots Rancho’s School.

The movie 'Dil dhadakne do' and a Netflix web series 'Four more shots please' have your heart and so Istanbul. We always love to blend, whether it is about colours, cultures, spices, traditions, or anything. Istanbul is one of the significant blends. It is an abutment of two major continents-Asia and Europe. Many of us misunderstand Istanbul as the capital of Turkey, but it is not. Turkey's capital is Ankara, while Istanbul is Turkey's largest city. Istanbul has a treasure of mesmerizing mosques, antique architecture, charming cuisines, unique traditions, cultures, intricate churches, palaces, vibrant markets, and the most delicious Turkish delights. As Istanbul straddles two continents; we can say. 'East met West; Istanbul is best!'

Turkey is so rich in history, the lands have been ruled by different Sultans, Kings, and people in power. We start from Istanbul, exploring both the modern and old city of the walled city and shop to our heart’s content at the colourful bazaars. Then to Cappadocia, a beautiful city that’s been gaining popular in recent years for the hot air balloon trip that lets you see the city and the vast valleys from a bird’s eye view. But not just that, Cappadocia has a unique underground city despite the rather untouched surface. Then we head to Pamukkale and make a stop at Konya City, where the founder of Whirling Dervishes was laid. In Pamukkale, we’ll have a whole day to explore the ancient city of Hierapolis best known for their cascading hot springs believed to have healing properties and are rich in calcium, the hotspot for people of ancient times to bathe and hangout. We’ll also explore the ancient city of Ephesus while stopping at Kusadasi, where many of the ancient structures are still very well-preserved, particularly the Arcadian Way and the Roman Baths. We’ll then hop on a cruise and visit Athens and arrive at the biggest port in Greece, Piraeous, and visit the beautiful islands of Santorini and Mykonos before arriving in Cesme where we’ll head back to Istanbul for our flight back home.

DGCA lifts 50% cap on its flights from this winter schedule

In a major reprieve for SpiceJet, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has lifted the 50 per cent cap on its flight operations from this winter schedule, effective October 30. The low cost carrier, which expects funding of about INR 1,000 crore from the government’s modified emergency credit scheme, has been allowed to operate 3,193 weekly domestic flights - up 6.6 per cent from last winter’s figure of 2,995.

Now, GoAir or GoFirst will see its operations nosedive by nearly 40 per cent with 1,390 weekly flights this winter compared to 2,290 last time, due to as any as 22 of its aircraft grounded as they await engines that have been delayed by global supply chain issues.

Overall this winter will see marginally (1.5 per cent) less domestic flights than last year. A winter schedule for 21,941 weekly domestic flights has been approved for this winter, compared to 22,287 same time last year.

Tata Group Vistara and soon to be privatised Alliance Air will see the maximum growth in flights at 16 per cent and 13.5 per cent, respectively. The biggest relief in the winter schedule is for SpiceJet, whose operations were capped this summer after a series of snags in its fleet. The restrictions was in place from July 27 to October 29, when the summer schedule ends.

The DGCA’s July 27 order had said “any increase in the number of departures beyond 50 per cent of the number of departures approved under summer schedule 2022… shall be subject to the airline demonstrating to the satisfaction of DGCA that it has sufficient technical support and financial resource to safely and efficiently undertake such enhanced capacity.”

Clearly lifting of the restrictions means the DGCA is now satisfied that SpiceJet has the resources to to operate more flights.

The low cost airline will lease about seven planes to do the same, with a couple of them already here. It recently hiked salaries of its pilots. On a standalone basis, SpiceJet will be the second biggest airline in terms of approved schedule for domestic flights after IndiGo. Winter Schedule 2022 will be effective from October 30 to March 25, 2023. In that “21,941 departures per week have been approved from 105 airports. Deoghar, Shimla and Rourkela are the new airports (for operating flights) proposed by the scheduled airlines,” the DGCA said in a statement.

IndiGo will remain the biggest operator with 10,085 weekly domestic flight, down 1.5 per cent from 10,243 last time. Tata Group airlines - Air India (1,990), Vistara (1,941) and AirAsia India or AAIPL (1,462) - have a collective schedule for 5,393 domestic flights, 5 per cent more than last winter’s 5,121. GoAir has a significant part of its fleet grounded due to want of engines and will its operations shrink the most. While Trujet and Pawan Hans have suspended their scheduled operations, Akasa has started flying from this summer.

Germany, a diverse travel destination, has launched its Autumn/Winter campaign, encouraging travellers to visit, explore, and experience its sustainable and diverse culture. From unspoilt landscapes to authentic cuisine, urban attractions to historical locales, Germany is the ultimate European destination to travel sustainably.

The ‘Feel Good’ campaign encompasses a plethora of guiding tips highlighting the country’s eco-initiatives providing conscious travellers with adequate tools and information on reducing their carbon footprint while touring different regions.

With the German Environment Agency having set the goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65 per cent by 2030, and complete neutrality by 2045, the German National Tourism Board is consistently supporting this goal through various ongoing initiatives with one of them being the ‘Feel Good’ Campaign.

“Germany will continue to position itself as one of Indian’s all-time favourite destinations with easy accessibility and valuable tourism experiences that can cater to all travel desires. For the India market, we will focus on creating awareness and offering eco-friendly and sustainable ‘things to do to promote Germany as a responsible and sustainable tourism destination,” said Romit Theophilus, Director, German National Tourist Office, India.

Under the initiative, states and towns are highlighting their innovative transport solutions, pioneering examples of green architecture, and sprawling parks – all of which ensure an exciting city break that can be enjoyed eco-responsibly. Berlin has an abundance of green hotspots including vegan restaurants and alternative events within the city’s urban oasis; Freiburg features a Plusenergy House, which aims to achieve the world’s best energy values for buildings and represents the efficiency standards expected in the future. The tranquil Black Forest in Deidesheim has long been known for being a hub for local food produce and handmade crafts. At the same time, Celle recently became a certified sustainable destination for its eco-friendly initiatives and practices.

“Germany’s ‘Feel Good’ campaign offers the right advice and tips to enjoy sustainability on the move in the country. Not only can travellers reduce their ecological footprint, but they can also calculate their carbon emissions through our CO2 calculator, ensuring their trip is climate neutral and as sustainable as possible.”

In addition to measuring the carbon footprint of both air and car journeys using a CO2 calculator by myclimate.org, the ideal partner for effective climate protection, travellers can also sponsor carbon offset programmes in various countries around the world. These include providing cooking stoves for people in Kenya, reforestation assistance for Nicaraguan farmers, and much more. This compensation initiative was created to help positively shape the future of the world while making the trip as climate neutral as possible.

Germany has a broad range of other locations and activities also available for travellers to explore. Click here for more details on Germany’s ‘Feel Good’ campaign.

Tourists in for a surprise as snowfall, rains bring early winter in Kashmir

Snowfall in higher reaches of Kashmir, including popular tourist destinations like Gulmarg and Sonamarg, and rains in plains brought wintry conditions earlier than usual in the valley, officials said on Thursday.

"There was significant snowfall in many areas of Kashmir including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Gurez, and Karnah during the intervening night," the officials said.

The officials said more than two inches of snow had accumulated in the Gulmarg bowl while the snowfall was heavier in higher reaches of the valley.

They said even the Zabarwan mountain range in the city had received traces of snowfall during the night.

Srinagar city and other areas of the valley received moderate rainfall since the early hours of Thursday, bringing down the temperature by several degrees.

People have slipped into winter wear like sweaters and heavy jackets earlier than usual.

The early snowfall has brought cheer to the faces of tourists who have arrived here to escape the pollution caused by Diwali crackers elsewhere in the country.

"We had come to enjoy the autumn hues of Kashmir while escaping the pollution caused by firecrackers back home. This snowfall is an unexpected bonus for us," S Arvind, a resident of Hyderabad, told PTI.

Shoaib Ali, a travel agent, said the reports of snowfall have led to renewed interest in Kashmir’s winter tourism this year.

"The first snowfall in the mountains was on Tuesday and I had a busy day attending to calls from regular clients on Wednesday about winter packages. Hopefully, there will be good snowfall this winter to sustain winter tourism," Ali said.

However, apple farmers in south Kashmir are worried lot as heavy snowfall before December will not only destroy the crop this year but cause damage to trees.

"We have had early snowfall now for three years in a row. I hope it was just a passing event as a heavy snowfall at this time will damage the trees which are still full of fruit," Bashir Ahmad, an apple farmer from Shopian, said.

He said while early harvesting this year has ensured against any major loss, 20 per cent of the crop was still on the trees.

The weatherman has forecast improvement in the conditions later in the day and predicted a dry week.

UK on track to process visa applications within 15 days

British High Commissioner to India, Alex Ellis on Tuesday said that they are on track to get back to processing India to UK visa applications within our standard of 15 days.

“We are on track to get back to processing India to Great Britain applications within our standard of 15 days,” tweeted Ellis.

He said that Indian student numbers are up by 89 per cent since last year and skilled workers’ visas bring processed faster with a focus on improving visitor visa processing times.

“The good news is we are now getting back on track. We have dealt with an unprecedented surge in demand for student visas, 89 per cent up last year. We are turning right off skilled worker visas very fast. And now we are focussing on visitor visas to get them back within 15 days,” said the British High Commissioner.

Notably, the combination of an unprecedented surge in demand for travel from India to the UK, combined with the effects of COVID-19 and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, meant that UK visa processing got well outside of a 15-day working standard.

“We are doing that through a collective effort of our teams in Delhi, in the UK and all over the world. I am glad to say, I think we are now on track,” said Ellis. He also said that the UK had good availability in visa application centres and urged applicants to apply for visas earlier.

“Don’t forget, we have got good availability in our visa application centres as well. You can help by applying early. You can apply three months in advance. You can use the different services, including the priority visa service and the super priority visa service if you have a particular urgency,” said Ellis. He also advised the applicants to provide the information as requested.

“Make sure you provide the information requested, not just the information which you want to give. And together, I think we can get right down to the 15-day work service standard by the end of this year. That’s my aim. So, good news, we are on track and I think we can get well on track over the next few weeks,” added the British High Commissioner.

It is pertinent to note that India has now overtaken China as the largest nationality being issued sponsored study visas in the UK.

The latest UK Immigration Statistics published today (25 August) show that nearly 118,000 Indian students received a Student visa in the year ending June 2022 – an 89 per cent increase from the previous year. India has now overtaken China as the largest nationality being issued sponsored study visas in the UK.

The UK continues to be a popular destination for Indian holidaymakers too. Indian nationals accounted for the highest proportion (28per cent) of Visitor visas granted. More than 258,000 Indian nationals received visit visas in the year ending June 2022 – a 630 per cent increase compared to the previous year (when travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic were still in place).

In the year ending June 2022, Indian nationals also received nearly 103,000 Work visas (which includes skilled and seasonal workers) – a 148 per cent increase over the previous year. Indian nationals continue to be the top nationality granted Skilled Worker visas, accounting for 46 per cent of all skilled work visas granted globally.
