Amboli : Living Amidst Clouds, Chasing Waterfalls, Mountains Calling, Jungle Treks and a lot more.
I was talking to my friend about taking our families to . I knew my family would enjoy being surrounded by clouds all the time - and trust me, I’m not exaggerating. I also wanted to take my daughter to a waterfall so she could get an answer to her question - “Why does daddy make so many trips?” My friend was immediately sold. We decided on dates, made travel bookings and organized our stay.
My first visit to Amboli was incomplete as I met with a minor bike accident en route to Amboli. I have a titanium rod in my leg due to that episode. Later when I was with my friends there, we updated our definitions of paradise during the visit and decided that we should get our families to experience the same. The previous visit was the inception of our current family plan.
Train ticket bookings were done by my friend staying in Thane. Usually, he selects Thane as the boarding point and he did that this time too. Considering the health and age of my mother, I preferred to board from the starting station - CSMT. I kept hoping that the TTE would make a visit only after Thane passes since that’s generally when they start checking tickets. But this time I encountered a not-so-lazy TTE who decided to check immediately, and I was penalized for my early boarding. All my reasoning and pleading were ignored. The penalty was not very steep so I agreed to pay - I should have paid it upfront as I knew I was wrong.
Boarding Train to Sawantwadi
My friend boarded the train with his family from Thane. Unfortunately, Central Railway did not put right information about the coaches and their positioning from the engine on Thane station. They had to do a little running around as the information provided in the app was also not accurate. I can only imagine the pain senior citizens have to bear when the platforms or coach positioning changes. IRCTC should pay attention to this and take measures to update its apps. The trains are vestibuled, and you can hop on to any coach but then moving through small passages with luggage, taking care of children and senior citizens of your family especially when the train is moving is risky. Thanks to the current government that we have escalators and lifts at most platforms - I’m not taking the name of the party to avoid political debate/mess.
It was a decent travel till , especially with so many local vendors selling fresh and delicious snacks. Train journeys always bring nostalgia to me. When my father was alive, he would take us all for trips every year in trains; those days we did not have much money, but the days were good. Today when I have the money, my father is not around - how much would I love to take him to many places. Anyways…
Car-on-Hire through someone you know
Just before arriving at Sawantwadi, I called the guy I hired. The train touched Sawantwadi an hour late. The driver received us and took us to a lunch home for our food. We were lucky as we were the last customers that lunch home allowed that day. The food was very homemade-like. The good part of such places is that they are easy to digest, do not have any harmful effects and are also pocket-friendly.
The driver/owner of the car who took us there was through a friend. He did not provide costing details beforehand and kept saying - “We will look at it later; you have come through a common friend.” At the time of making final payments, he turned out to be a disaster - he charged us twice the normal rate. I even sent him a screen snip of other cab vendors and their charges, but this guy refused to reduce the price, saying that it was his normal cost plan. He taught me a lesson; never book through someone you know as you then have to accommodate them. Hopefully, he learns his lesson too and stops taking tourists for a ride - you know what I mean! It took us an hour and a half to cover 38 km from Sawantwadi station to our resort in , and we were charged INR 5500 for this trip.
Whistling Woods Resort – A Family run business owned by a Butterfly enthusiast.
We entered Amboli and checked into the rooms we booked at Whistling Woods, Amboli. This place was surrounded by flora and fauna, and the environment there was super. We were literally put up amidst clouds. This property is run by a family, and they take good care of their guest. The owner is a butterfly enthusiast and even has a book published on butterflies. He makes it a point to come talk to every family staying at his property. He was kind enough to arrange rooms for my friend and me side by side. To ensure both families were put up together, he had to revise allotment of the rooms and rearrange bookings. This day was a rest day - upon reaching, we had planned the rest of the day to take rest, take lazy strolls and breathe fresh unpolluted air.
When I booked the property, I kept asking the owner to share an account number or some link so I could transfer a portion of my booking amount to ensure the rooms were blocked and not provided to anyone other than us. To this, the owner kept saying - “Do not worry; the rooms are blocked, and you can pay once you get here.”
The only miss here is that they do not have a restaurant within the property. They have tied up with another restaurant not far away. You can order lunch and dinner as per menu provided. Alternatively, you could tell the team in advance what you would like to eat for dinner, and they will keep it ready at the time you decide on. You have a hall-like room with a dining section towards one side and a library on the other side. We had all our meals here; the food was delicious and home-cooked style - home-style cooking ensures no heartburns with excessive spices or masalas and no tactics like using soda in food making you feel full with less food quantity they offer.
Your stay options included breakfast prepared by the owner’s family/cooks, and they have limited options - Poha, Upma, Sheera and Bread butter with tea. This does not change irrespective of the duration of your stay.
On the second day of our stay, my mother started longing for a paratha. Earlier, I thought it was only my family, but other families who stayed there were also complaining about the lack of options. Regardless of how you operate, you are in the hospitality business and you need to ensure that your guests are taken care of. Hire a cook if needed and organize better breakfast. Not forgetting food plays an important role in deciding your stay - at least for a tourist.
Sightseeing Amboli
There are quite a few options that one can engage in while in Amboli. All these options can be covered in a day’s time, so it’s enough if you have one complete day here at your disposal.
Its star attraction is the or the Stair-waterfall that you may have seen on multiple social media platforms and YouTube videos. This is the most crowded place, and with experience, I can say - in order to enjoy this place and let its majestic experience sink into you, plan on reaching this place by 7 am if not earlier. By 8:30 - 9 am, you will see it getting crowded. The most irritating kinds are the reel makers who block the routes and keep asking you to get to a side. We are here from far to enjoy; there is going to be a rush of humans coming here. You may please want to make editing in your recordings; do not trouble others for your videos. Climbing the steps and some rocks, we got on a decent spot to enjoy the waterfall. Yes, we clicked pictures and videos too - but without troubling anyone!
After Amboli waterfall, we generally would head towards . The place is good, but we had to give it a skip keeping in mind that we were traveling with senior citizens and children. To get to Baba falls, one requires a small trek. Also, this year the rains decided to play hide and seek - leaving most waterfalls dry or low on flow. After enjoying the Amboli waterfall, we relished street food just across the waterfall. There are a lot of snack options for you to enjoy but mind you - only if you are used to street food or you may have some digestion situation.
We then headed to our resort, changed into dry clothes and sat for our light but second round of breakfast. After breakfast, we went sightseeing. Some of the options you may want to include in your itinerary are , Point, River origin point, , waterfall and . Don’t forget to take a detour wherever you feel like.
Way Back Home
We wanted to take on our way back. The train had no stop at Sawantwadi, so we boarded the train from Kankavli. Our overall experience on the train was super positive. The seats, air condition, power switches for electronic devices, windows - everything was superlative. Washrooms were clean and well-maintained, and the staff was well-trained too. For now, the train is in testing mode and hence the number of coaches is less; our train only had 5 coaches.
Our boarding time was 2:20 pm; they did not serve us lunch. However, by 5 pm, they started serving us snacks. The food quality was good - there were authorities that inspected food before it was served to passengers. By 8 pm, we were served dinner; the quality of food was really good.
Trains these days have auto-closing doors; it’s a development sign. However, I personally feel there are positives and negatives attached to it. One cannot get down at platforms as the doors may close and the person may be left out. Also, people who were able to just make it to the station could not board the trains as the doors were all shut and the train started to move. Had it been another train, that guy could have boarded it. There are almost no jerks felt inside the train.
We walked up to the executive coaches where the seats are a tad bigger and they rotate 180 degrees; one can also sit facing the window. All-in-all, it was a wonderful trip filled with experiences.
Next would be a trip to Goa; we will be traveling via the same trains then too. I can then compare how journey via Vande Bharat is after completing its testing phase.
