1956-ம் ஆண்டு நவம்பர் 1-ம் தேதி குமரி மாவட்டம் தமிழகத்துடன் இணைந்தது. அதற்கு முன்பு திருவிதாங்கூர் சமஸ்தானத்தில் இருந்த குமரி, பலவகையிலும் இன்னல்களுக்கு ஆளாகி வந்தது. தியாகம், உயிரிழப்பு, மாபெரும் போராட்டங்கள் என ஏராளமான வரலாறுகளும் அதன்பின்னால் இருக்கிறது. நீண்ட நெடிய போராட்டத்துக்குப் பின்னர், தாய் தமிழகத்தோடு குமரி இணைந்து இன்றுடன் 65 ஆண்டுகள் நிறைவு பெறுகிறது.
திருவிதாங்கூர் சமஸ்தானத்தில் குமரி மாவட்டம் இருந்த போது, இங்குள்ள தமிழர்கள் பலவகையிலும் வஞ்சிக்கப்பட்டனர். சாதிய பாகுபாடுகள் கடுமையாக இருந்த காலக்கட்டம் அது. மன்னருக்கு வேண்டப்பட்டவர்களுக்குப் பிரதிநிதித்துவமும், நிலங்களும் வழங்கப்பட்டது. அடுக்கடுக்காய் வரிகள் விதிக்கப்பட்டது. குறிப்பிட்ட சமூக பெண்கள் மேல் சேலை அணியக்கூட அனுமதி மறுக்கப்பட்டது.
முத்துக்குட்டி சுவாமி, நாராயணகுரு, அய்யங்காலி ஆகியோர் தொடக்க நிலை ஆன்மீக களப்போராளிகள். முத்துக்குட்டி சுவாமி, சுவாமிதோப்பில் சமத்துவ கிணறு வெட்டியும், இடுப்பில் துண்டு கட்டியவர்களை தலையில் துண்டைக் கட்ட வைத்தும், சாதி பாகுபாட்டை அகற்ற அறைகூவல் விடுத்தார்..
ஆதிக்க, அடக்கு முறைக்கு எதிரான போராட்டம் மார்ஷல் நேசமணியால் பெருந்தீயாக பரவியது. கேரளாவில் இந்திய சுதந்திரப் போராட்டத்தில் தீவிரமாக பங்கெடுத்து, போராட்டத்தை முன்னெடுத்த தலைவர்கள் டி.கே.நாராயணப்பிள்ளை, பொன்னரை ஸ்ரீதர், கேளப்பன், சகோதரன் ஐயப்பன், பனம்பள்ளி கோவிந்த மேனன், குளத்தில் வேலாயுத நாயர் ஆகியோர் குமரியை தமிழகத்துடன் இணைக்க எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்து அங்கு போராடினார்கள். அவர்கள் கன்னியாகுமரி முதல் காசர்கோடு வரை ஐக்கிய கேரளம் எனவும் அறிவித்தனர். தமிழகத்தில் ம.பொ.சியும் திருத்தமிழர் போராட்டத்தை முன்னெடுத்தார்.
பி.சிதம்பரம் பிள்ளை, வேலாயுதப் பெருமாள் பிள்ளை, நாகலிங்கம், ஸ்ரீதாஸ், ஷாம் நந்தானியேல், தாமரைக்குளம் வேலாயுதம், காந்திராமன், கடுக்கரை வேலப்பன், முன்னாள் எம்எல்ஏக்கள் ராம், டி.எஸ்.மணி, கொச்சு மணி, சி.சங்கர் ஆகியோர் தீவிரமுடன் களம் கண்டனர்.
நேசமணி தலைமையில் தீவிரப்பட்ட போராட்டம் தமிழகத்துடன் குமரியை இணைய வைத்தது. சிதம்பரநாதன் நாடார், ரசாக் எம்.பி., பி.எஸ்.மணி, குஞ்சன் நாடார், தாணுலிங்க நாடார், பொன்னப்ப நாடார், சிதம்பர நாதன் நாடார் என, பலரது போராட்டம் இதில் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
மொழிவாரி மாநில பிரிப்பின் பிண்ணணியில், குமரி இணைப்புப் போராட்டம் வலுப்பெற்றது. 1948-ல் குமரி மாவட்டம் மங்காடு பகுதியில் குமரி உரிமை மீட்புப் போராட்டப் பொதுக்கூட்டம் நடைபெற்றது. கேரளக் காவலர்கள் கூட்டத்தைக் கலைக்க துப்பாக்கிச் சூடு நடத்தினர். இதில் மங்காடு தேவசகாயம், பைங்குளம் செல்லையன் ஆகியோர் பலியானார்கள்.
பீர்மேடு, மூணாறு, தேவிகுளம் என தமிழர்கள் வாழும் பகுதியெல்லாம் போராட்டம் கொழுந்துவிட்டு எரிந்தது. நேசமணி தலைமையில் பீர்மேட்டுக்கே சென்ற போராட்டக்காரர்கள் தமிழர் பகுதிகளைத் தமிழகத்துடன் இணைக்க கோஷமிட்டனர். மூணாறு பகுதியில் எஸ்.எஸ்.சர்மா, குப்புசாமி, தேவியப்பன் தலைமையில் போராட்டம் தீவிரமடைந்தது. 1954 ஜூலை மாதம் மூணாறில் 144 தடை உத்தரவு போடப்பட்டது. நேசமணி, அப்துல் ரசாக், சிதம்பரநாதன் என பலரும் மூணாறுக்குச் சென்று தொடர்ச்சியாகக் கைது செய்யப்பட்டனர்.
1954 ஆகஸ்ட் 11 தினத்தை விடுதலை தினமாக அறிவித்தது திருவிதாங்கூர் தமிழ்நாடு காங்கிரஸ். அன்றைய தினம் மார்த்தாண்டத்தில் போலீஸார் நடத்திய துப்பாக்கிச் சூட்டில் தேம்பனூர் பொன்னையன், மேக்கன்கரை ராமையன், மணலி எம்.பாலையன், தொடுவெட்டி பப்பு பணிக்கர் ஆகியோர் கொல்லப்பட்டனர். இதேபோல், புதுக்கடையில் நடைபெற்ற துப்பாக்கிச் சூட்டில் புதுக்கடை அருளப்பன், கிள்ளியூர் முத்துசுவாமி, தோட்டவரம் குமாரன், புதுக்கடை செல்லப்ப பிள்ளை, தேங்காய்பட்டணம் பீர்முகம்மது என மொத்தம் 9 பேர் பலியானார்கள்.
தமிழர்கள் அதிகம் வசிக்கும் 9 தாலுகாக்களை இணைக்கக்கோரி நடைபெற்றதுதான் இந்த திருத்தமிழர் போராட்டம். அதில் கேட்டபடி தேவிகுளமும், பீர்மேடும் இணைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தால் இப்போது முல்லைப் பெரியாறு போராட்டம் நடந்திருக்காது. குமரி மாவட்டத்தின் நான்கு தாலுகாக்களும், செங்கோட்டை தாலுகாவுமே தமிழகத்துடன் இணைந்தது.

நாகர்கோவிலில் குமரி மாவட்டம் தமிழகத்துடன் இணையப்பாடுபட்ட மார்ஷல் நேசமணிக்கு மணிமண்டபம் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதில் மாவட்ட ஆட்சியர் சார்பில் மாலை அணிவித்து மரியாதை செலுத்தப்படுகிறது. இதேபோல் அனைத்து அரசியல் கட்சிகளின் சார்பிலும் மார்ஷல் நேசமணிக்கு மாலை அணிவித்து மரியாதை செலுத்தப்படுகிறது.
ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் குமரி மாவட்டம், தாய் தமிழகத்தோடு இணைந்த தினத்துக்கு குமரி மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ளூர் விடுமுறையும் அளிக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது. அதேநேரத்தில், குமரி இணைப்புப் போராட்டத்தில் உயிர்நீத்த தியாகிகளுக்காக மார்த்தாண்டம் காந்தி மைதானத்தில் நினைவு ஸ்தூபி அமைக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது.

இவ்வாறான நீண்ட நெடிய போராட்டங்களுக்குப் பின்,

1956 – நவம்பா் முதல் நாளன்று தோவாளை, அகஸ்தீஸ்வரம், கல்குளம் மற்றும் விளவங்கோடு ஆகிய நான்கு தாலுகாக்கள் ஒன்றிணைக்கப்பட்டு நாகா்கோவிலை தலைமை இடமாக கொண்டு தமிழ்நாட்டில் கன்னியாகுமரி என்ற புதிய மாவட்டம் உருவாக்கப்பட்டது.

Shankumugham Beach is a beach in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, south India. The beach is on the western side of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) and very near to Trivandrum International Airport.

The vast stretch of white sand and the serene atmosphere, away from the crowd in the city, provide all the ingredients for relaxation and for spending an ideal evening. There is also a "Star Fish Restaurant" with eating kiosks and open-air theatre with car parking facilities. Good food can be enjoyed at the Old Coffee House, just across the beach, which is also a vantage point for enjoying the sunset. The beach is not well maintained, with garbage littering the entire area.

Shanghumugham beach is considered as the ‘Arattukadavu’ of Sri Ananthapadmanabhan - The presiding deity of the city. Thousands of Hindus perform ‘Bali Tharpanam’ during special occasions. Shankhumugham is the prime location for Ganesh Nimarjan at the time of Vinayaka Chathurthi.

On the Arattu day at Thiruvananthapuram, images of Lord Padmanabhaswamy, Lord Narasimha, and Lord Krishna are taken in procession to the Laccadive Sea at Shanghumugham beach. His Highness the now-titular Maharaja of Travancore will lead the procession with the royal sword in hand, who will be escorted by members of the royal family, armed guards, temple authorities, mounted police, and officers. After the ceremonial bath at Shanghumugham, images are taken back in procession which marks the conclusion of the festival.

The skating school here offers coaching on skating. Adjacent to the skating school is an indoor sports complex which provides facilities for Badminton and Table Tennis.

The sculpture of Sagarakanyaka - Mermaid by Kanayi Kunhiraman is an added attraction. This giant statue is more than 35 metres long. The 'Jawaharlal Nehru Park of Traffic signs for children' is situated here, which is helpful for the children to understand the traffic rules while playing in the park. The park also provides cycling facilities for small children.

The military area of Southern Air Command of the Indian Air Force and part of the main airport are situated near Shankumugham Beach.

Veli Tourist Village is near the beach. Boating facilities are offered at this picnic spot. Speed boats, restaurants and well-landscaped gardens are available.

Poovar is a tourist town in Neyyattinkara (tehsil) in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala state, South India. This village is almost at the southern tip of Thiruvananthapuram while the next village, Pozhiyoor, marks the end of Kerala. This village beach attracts tourists throughout the year. The beach is magnificent and has many 5 star hotels and Island hotels to attract more and more tourists. This will eventually contribute more development
Poovar was a trading centre of timber, sandalwood, ivory and spices. The village was one of the ancient Muslim settlements along the western coast of India. The central mosque in Poovar was built by Malik Deenar, an eighth century Muslim preacher. During the reign of the Chola dynasty, Poovar was a major port. The explorer Megasthenes, Roman writer Pliny the Elder and Venetian traveller Marco Polo mention connections with Greece and Rome.

There were a merchant named Pokku Moosa Maraikkar who lived in Poovar during the 18th century in a house called Kallaraickal Tharavad, which many times gave shelter to Marthanda Varma (1706–58), king of Travancore from his enemies. Poovar also had trade relations with international markets at this time as well as a well trained army and some ships. At the Battle of Colachel and Battle of Kayamkulam these forces assisted the Travancore army against the Dutch East India Company during the Travancore–Dutch War.

The origin of the name "Poovar" has a story related to Marthanda Varma. Before that it was called Pokkumoosapuram. During internal riots in Travancore and while escaping from the Ettuveetil Pillamar (Lords of the Eight Houses), the king reached Poovar. It was a spring season and the trees on either sides of the Neyyar were full of flowers. These flowers fell into the river making it more attractive. On seeing this pleasant scenery, Marthanda Varma commented that this was poo-var, a conjunction of the Malayalam words for "flower" and "river"

Kovalam Beach

மழைக்காலத்தில் இங்கு விழும் அருவிகளில் குளிப்பதற்காகச் சுற்றுலாப் பயணிகள் பல பகுதிகளில் இருந்தும் இங்கு வருகின்றனர். இங்குள்ள திருக்குற்றாலம் குற்றாலநாதர் கோயிலால் இவ்வூர் இப்பெயர் பெற்றது. இவ்விடத்தை மையமாகக் கொண்டு எழுதப்பட்ட திருக்குற்றாலக் குறவஞ்சி தமிழ் சிற்றிலக்கியங்களில் புகழ் பெற்றது.

Devasahayam Mount is a Christian Pilgrimage center located at Aralvaimozhi in Kanyakumari District of Tamilnadu. It is situated on the Nagercoil - Thirunelveli highway in Tamilnadu. Devasahayam Pillai was an 18th century convert from Hinduism to Christianity in the southern part of India. He may have been an official in the court of the Travancore king, Maharaja Marthanda Varma, during which time he came under the influence of the former Dutch naval commander, Captain Eustachius De Lannoy.

Some people believe that the soldiers went up the forested hills and tried to shoot Devasahayam, but were unable to fire; after which he took the gun in his hands, blessed it and gave it back to the soldiers to shoot him to death, if they wished to. The soldiers took the gun back and fired at him five times. His body was then carelessly thrown out near the foothills at Devasahayam Mount (Kattadimalai). It was at Kattadimalai in Kanyakumari district that Devasahayam Pillai died on 14 January 1752.

There is a Catholic church located in the hill of Kattadi malai where Devasahayam Pillai was martyred. His mortal remains were interred near the altar inside St. Xavier's Church, Kottar, Nagercoil, which is now a Cathedral. Devasahayam's tomb has been restored and beautified in view of the declaration of martyrdom and beatification. At that spot on the hillock (called Kattadimalai), devotees believe that rocks fell and were broken at that moment. One rock at the place makes bell-like sounds when knocked with a stone.

கன்னியாகுமரி மாவட்டம், சுசீந்திரம் எனும் ஊரில் அமைந்துள்ளது தாணுமாலயன் கோயில். சிவன், விஷ்ணு, பிரம்மா ஆகிய முப்பெருங்கடவுள்களும் ஒன்றின் மேல் ஒன்றாக அமைந்துள்ள இக்கோயில் தாணுமாலயன் கோயில் என அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

தாணுமாலயன் கோயில்
அத்திரி முனிவரும், அவருடைய இல்லத்தரசியும் கற்புக்கரசியுமான அனுசுயாவும் ஞானாரண்யம் எனும் பழம்பெயர்பெற்ற சுசீந்திரத்தில் தவம் செய்தனர். இந்நிலையில், அத்திரி முனிவர் இமயமலைக்குச் சென்றார். அப்போது சிவபெருமான், விஷ்ணு, பிரம்மா ஆகிய முப்பெருங்கடவுள்களும் அனுசுயாவின் கற்பை சோதிக்க எண்ணி பிராமணர் வேடம் அணிந்து, அவருடைய ஆசிரமத்திற்கு வந்து உணவு தருமாறு வேண்டினர். அனுசுயாவும் உணவு படைக்கத் தொடங்கினார். அப்போது மூவரும், ”ஆடை அணிந்த ஒருவரால் உணவு பரிமாறப்படுமாயின் உணவு உண்ண ஆகாது” என்று கூறினர். இதைக் கேட்டு திடுக்கிட்ட அனுசுயாதேவி, தன் கணவர் திருவடி கழுவிய நீரை மூவர் மீதும் தெளித்தார். அவர்கள் மூவரும் பச்சிளங்குழந்தைகளாக மாறினர். பின்பு அந்தப் பச்சிளங்குழந்தைகளுக்கு உணவூட்டி, தொட்டிலிட்டு, தாலாட்டித் தூங்கச் செய்தாள். தங்கள் கணவர்கள் பச்சிளங்குழந்தையாக மாற்றப்பட்டதை அறிந்த மூவரின் தேவியரும் அங்கு வந்து அனுசுயாவிடம், தங்கள் கணவர்களை பழைய உருவிற்கு மாற்றித் தர வேண்டினர். தேவியர்கள் வேண்டுகோளுக்கிணங்கிய அனுசுயா முப்பெரும் கடவுளுக்கும் பழைய உருவைக் கொடுத்தாள். அப்போது திரும்பி வந்த அத்திரி முனிவரும் அனுசூயாவோடு சேர்ந்து, மும்மூர்த்திகளின் காட்சியைப் பெற்றார். இந்நிகழ்ச்சியை நினைவூட்டவே சுசீந்திரம் கோவில் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது என்கிறது இதன் தல வரலாறு.

அத்திரி முனிவரும், அனுசுயாவும் இங்குள்ள தல விருட்சமான கொன்றை மரத்தினடியில் நின்று வேண்ட மும்மூர்த்திகளும் காட்சி கொடுத்தனர். இதைக் குறிக்கும் விதமாக மும்மூர்த்திகளும் ஒரு முகமாய் தாணுமாலயன் என்ற பெயரில் இங்கு எழுந்தருளியுள்ளனர். சிவன் (தாணு), விஷ்ணு (மால்), பிரம்மா (அயன்) ஆகிய முப்பெருங்கடவுள்களும் சேர்ந்துள்ள இத்தல மூர்த்தி தாணுமாலயன் என அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்.

தாணுமாலயன் கோயில் அமைந்துள்ள இடம் சுசீந்திரம் என அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. அகலிகையால் ஏற்பட்ட தேவேந்திரனுடைய சாபம் நீங்க தேவேந்திரன் இத்தலத்துக்கு வந்து மும்மூர்த்திகளை ஒரே சமயத்தில் வழிபட்டு விமோசனம் பெற்ற தலம் இது. சுசீ என்றால் தூய்மை என்று பொருள். இந்திரன் இங்கு தூய்மை பெற்றதால் சுசீந்திரம் என அழைக்கப்படலாயிற்று.

அனுமன் சிலை தொகு
மேலக்கோபுர வாயிலுக்கு நிலத்தைத் தோண்டும்போது அனுமன் சிலை ஒன்று கிடைத்தது. 18 அடி உயரமுடைய இந்தச் சிலை 1929 ஆம் ஆண்டில் இராமபிரானின் கருவறைக்கு எதிரில் இருக்குமிடத்தில் நிறுவப்பட்டுள்ளது. இங்கு ஆஞ்சநேயர் வழிபாடு சிறப்பாக நடத்தப்பட்டு வருகிறது.

சிறப்புகள் தொகு
இக்கோயில் 5400 சதுர அடி பரப்பளவில் அமைந்துள்ளது.
இக்கோயிலின் அரச கோபுரத்தின் உயரம் நூற்று முப்பத்தி நாலரை அடி இருக்கிறது.
இக்கோயிலில் கணபதியைப் பெண்ணுருவில் செதுக்கியுள்ள சிற்பம் உள்ளது. இதை “விக்கினேசுவரி” என அழைக்கிறார்கள்.
இக்கோயிலின் நவக்கிரகங்கள் ஒரே கல்லில் செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த நவக்கிரகங்களின் சிற்பங்கள் மேற்கூரையில் உள்ளன.

Vattakottai Fort (or 'Circular Fort') is a seaside fort near Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu the southern tip of India. It was built in the 18th century as a coastal defence-fortification and barracks in the erstwhile Travancore kingdom.

It was constructed in the 18th century by the Venad kings of Travancore, Later it was modified under the supervision of Captain Eustachius De Lannoy, an ex-Dutch naval officer of the Dutch East India Company, who became commander of the Travancore Army (the very army that defeated him in the Battle of Colachel) in the 18th century, after he earned the trust of the Travancore King Marthanda Varma. De Lannoy reconstructed Vattakottai, as part of the defence-fortifications he undertook throughout Travancore.

The fort is made of granite blocks and, today, a part of the fort extends into the sea. It is a protected site under the Indian archaeological department. A major renovation of the fort was undertaken recently by the department, and the site is now a popular tourist spot.
