Sonaugi hushes the din inside, as you enter its strong, silent air to look the Dhauladhars in the eye. ient, sage-like. Towering against a cerulean sky, the tall trees lend a fecund, dark green hue to the surroundings. Some of them go back many years in time, their arms wide open, waiting in silence – waiting to receive the odd visitor who glides into a sn**ch of land to catch the crack of dawn and soaks in a long, lazy sun that drags its feet at dusk. It has birds in colours so luminous that you wonder if you just saw a flower being carried up in the strong, gusty winds of a Sonaugi afternoon. The Beas, or Vitasta as it was known once upon a hoary time, chants gently but you hear it only once the music of the winds dies down. As you sit in the omnipresent quiet watching the clouds rise from the valley shrouding you in a blanket of grey, you hear strains of a long forgotten poem that starts humming itself in your head. And you wonder if you are in a land of magic. Silent, golden Sonaugi is folded neatly between the squalor and pollution of Kullu and Manali. It is the side of a mountain, with a steep descent which is what probably saved it from the land-sharks who made a beeline for the Kulu-Manali hills. Sonaugi was the farm land of the nearby villagers who are said to have found golden wheat growing here and so named it Sona-ugi (Land of the Golden Crop). That land is now ripe with rows of apple and apricot trees.
