Photography was invented in the 1820s and allows us to enjoy these wonderful old views of the Taj Mahal. The photos were taken in the 1850s by Dr. John Murray who was employed with the East India Company army.

Technological limitations made it difficult to achieve proper exposure of landscape and sky. If the negative was properly exposed for buildings, the sky would often appear faded and blotchy. See the last picture where Murray solved this problem by blacking out the sky in his waxed paper negative, so that the sky and the Taj both looked radiant.

Look at this beautiful octagonal tomb in the Qutb compex. It belongs to a 16th Century priest – Imam Zamin.

Imam Zamin came to India from Central Asia (Turkestan) when Sikander Lodi ruled Delhi. He became chief imam of the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque, and Sikandar Lodi looked to him for spiritual guidance. The Sufi Imam disregarded worldly achievements and political intrigues, asking Lodi to strive instead for unification with the divine Oneness.

When the Mughal Babur defeated the Lodis, he too visited Imam Zamin to pay respects. Babur’s son Humayun also respected the Imam, and in fact the Imam's tomb was built during Humayun's reign. When the Afghan Sher Shah Suri briefly wrested Delhi from Humayun, Suri sought out the Imam's blessings too.

the Imam saw at least four kings rule and die. What an interesting life he must have led! Imagine him sitting in his dusty courtyard, with the mango trees in the background, listening to the call of Delhi's peacocks, while empires rose and fell and new rulers prostrated before him for his blessings.

Roasted sweet potato and star fruit - a favourite streetside snack in Delhi!

The earthy, smoky sweet potato is perfectly complemented by the sour-sweet star fruit.

The best part is the masala (spice mix) sprinkled on top. It's super tangy with dry mango powder and kala namak (black salt). A quick drizzle of lemon juice finishes this wholesome dish!

We are going to Tadoba. Want to come for this trip? Yeah it's going to be hot. We'll laze around drinking iced lemonades when we're not chasing tigers. There is even a swimming pool for those who want to get tanned.

But we are hoping for some outstanding summer sightings of the tiger!

Some of us are taking the overnight train from Mumbai. Some are flying into Nagpur to join the group.

Want to come along? WhatsApp +919867707414 for details.

Heritage Walk through Nizamuddin. The Nizamuddin area is a medieval settlement named after the highly venerated 14th century Sufi saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. The settlement contains medieval era tombs, shrines, mausoleums and step-wells. There is a vibrant community life centred around the dargah (tomb) of Hazrat Nizamuddin. The dargah keeps alive the cultural heritage of Sufi spirituality, through the poetry of Amir Khusrau and evening Qawwali performances.

Mosque and Tomb of Jamali-Kamali, Mehrauli Archaeological Park. Jamali was a 16th century Sufi saint who lived during the reigns of Sikander Lodi and Humayun. No one knows who Kamali was - but there are two male tombs inside, so perhaps he was a disciple, or a lover.

This monument is called Ajitgarh, meaning the Bastion of the Undefeated.

Originally called it the "Mutiny Memorial", it was built in 1863 to commemorate British and Indian soldiers killed in the 1857 War of Independence in Delhi. The government of India renamed it Ajitgarh in 1972, and re-dedicated it to the Indian martyrs of 1857.

Our "Mutiny Walk" explores the momentous series of events, conflicts and battles that took place in Delhi in 1857, and changed history forever.

Birds Hospital in Jain Mandir (temple), Old Delhi. The hospital was built in 1929 and mainly treats pigeons, and doves, parrots, sparrows, and occasionally peacocks.

The temple was built by Agarwal Jains, many of whom were invited by Mughal king Shah Jahan to settle in Delhi. The temple is said to have originated with a Jain officer who kept a tirthankara (god) statue in his tent for personal worship. Other Jain officers began worshiping in his tent, and temple was built at the site in 1656. The current structure dates from 1878.

One of the gorgeous chhatris of Gadisar Lake in Jaisalmer.

Gadisar Lake was built in 1156 by the founder of Jaisalmer, King Rawal Jaisal. It was later rebuilt by his descendant Gadsi Singh Bhati around 1367.

The lake was used for religious ceremonies and was also an important source of water for the city. The lake is home to multiple temples and shrines, and beautiful chhatris or cenotaphs (pavillions) built in memory of the various royals of Jaisalmer.

Aerial view of the Golden Fort, Jaisalmer. It is over 800 years old, built originally in 1156 CE by Rawal Jaisal.

The fort was protected by double fortification walls and circular bastions. There is a toe wall (an outer low retaining wall), and an additional pitching wall to hold the clay soil of the hill in place.

Between the inner and outer fortification walls, there is a mori, a pathway that allowed soldiers and horses to move throughout the structure in times of war.

Aerial view of the Qutb Minar. The circular ruins in the foreground are of another incomplete minaret, the Alai Minar. It was meant to be twice the height of the Qutb Minar! The construction began somewhere around 1300 CE, a vanity project by Alauddin Khilji. But he died in 1316, leaving an incomplete monument. Aladdin Khilji was an ambitious and fierce ruler, who fought and defeated six Mongol incursions. He conquered many parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Malwa. The minaret was meant to be a celebration of his many victories.

The next Bikaner Camel Festival is coming up on 13 - 15 January. These photos are from a camel beauty contest at the Bikaner Camel Festival. Aren't they handsome?!

Today Rajasthan has 200,000 camels, down from over a million in the 1990s. As India has modernized, we don't need as many camels for transport, ploughing or warfare. Paralelly, the camels' traditional grazing pastures are being turned into farms or industries.

There is a strong movement today to protect and promote camels. The public and private sectors are organizing herders, setting up camel milk chillers, and creating new-age brands around creamy camel milk chocolates and anti-aging camel milk soap.

The government holds camel medical camps and funds camel health research. Further, no one is allowed to export or slaughter camels. Whether this will truly help conserve them in the long run is a matter of debate. Lack of grazing pasture remains an important issue.
