ഒരു ഹോസ്പിറ്റൽ ആവശ്യാർത്ഥം കോയമ്പത്തൂരിൽ പോയി മടങ്ങുമ്പോൾ വണ്ടിയിൽ വെച്ച് ഇന്ന് ഒരു മനുഷ്യനെ പരിചയപ്പെട്ടു. മോനേ ഒരു ചായയ്ക്കുള്ള കാശ് തരുമോ - മുഖം കഴുകുമ്പോൾ,വാഷ്ബേസിന് തൊട്ടു താഴെ നിന്നാണ് ആ ഒച്ച. ഞാൻ നോക്കി. ഏറ്റവും സങ്കടത്തോടെയുള്ള മുഖവുമായി ഒരു മനുഷ്യൻ കൂനിക്കൂടിയിരിക്കുന്നു. തൊട്ടടുത്തിരുന്ന് പേര് ചോദിച്ചപ്പോൾ അയാൾ പറഞ്ഞു - രാമൻകുട്ടി. ആലത്തൂരാണ് വീട്. പെയിന്റിംഗ് തൊഴിലാളിയായിരുന്നു. ബന്ധുക്കൾ ആരുമില്ല. സഹോദരങ്ങൾ എല്ലാരും മരിച്ചു. ഭാര്യ നേരത്തെ പോയി. മൂന്ന് വർഷം മുമ്പ് ആക്സിഡന്റിൽ ഏക മകൻ മരണപ്പെട്ടു. മകന്റെത് പ്രണയ വിവാഹമായിരുന്നു. തമിഴ് നാട്ടുകാരി. പേരക്കുട്ടികൾ രണ്ട് പേർ അവിടെ വളരുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും അങ്ങോട്ട് പോകാറില്ല. ജാതി പ്രശ്നം. തമിഴ് നാട്ടിൽ സെക്യൂരിറ്റി പണി നോക്കിയിരുന്നു - സമരം കാരണം അത് നഷ്ടമായി. റെയിൽവേ സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ അന്തിയുറങ്ങുന്നു. ഒറ്റ ശ്വാസത്തിൽ ഇത്രയും പറയുമ്പോഴേക്ക് വണ്ടി ഷൊർണൂരെത്തി. കീശയിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന നോട്ടുകൾ കൈയിൽ വെച്ചു കൊടുത്തു. എന്നെയറിയാത്ത, ഞാനറിയാത്ത ആ മനുഷ്യനെ ഞാൻ ഒരു നിമിഷം ചേർത്തു നിർത്തി. വെറുതെ. അപ്പോൾ വല്ലാത്തൊരു സ്നേഹം അയാളുടെ കണ്ണുകളിൽ മിന്നി. ഇറങ്ങുമ്പോൾ അയാൾ എന്നോട് അന്വേഷിച്ചു: വഴിച്ചെലവിന് മോന്റെ കയ്യിൽ കാശുണ്ടല്ലോ, അല്ലേ ? ഉണ്ടെന്ന് ഞാൻ തലയാട്ടി. വണ്ടി നീങ്ങുമ്പോൾ അയാൾ കൈ വീശി. വിശദീകരിക്കാനാവാത്ത ഒരു ദുഃഖം വന്ന് പൊതിയുമ്പോൾ എന്തുകൊണ്ടോ ശിഹാബുദ്ദീൻ പൊയ്ത്തുംകടവിന്റെ ഒരു കഥയുടെ ശീർഷകം ഓർത്തു പോയി: ജീവിതം അതൊന്നു മാത്രം !
