Pic Explanation: Bhutan Giant Flying Squirrel (Petaurista nobilis) — a nocturnal glider of the eastern Himalayas, photographed near Singalila National Park.
Not all wilderness moments are loud.
Some are lit by torchlight, held in whispers, and watched in absolute stillness.
We were on a night walk near Singalila when this beautiful creature appeared—its chestnut-brown coat catching the beam just enough for us to pause in collective awe. The Bhutan Giant Flying Squirrel is one of the lesser-seen nocturnal species of Northeast India. Widespread yet secretive, it spends its days tucked away in tree hollows and emerges only after dusk—to glide silently between canopies in search of fruits, leaves, and bark.
Despite its name, it doesn’t really “fly”—it glides, using a large flap of skin (called a patagium) stretched between its limbs. Watching it navigate the forest at night feels less like a biology lesson and more like watching folklore unfold.
The forest at night is a different story.
You hear more than you see.
You sense more than you know.
And every once in a while, you look up—and find something that makes the dark feel magical.
