Its always exciting to spot a leopard on a safari. The 'Ghost of the Jungle' moves mostly at night, so it was a surprise to see this male moving late morning.
When the big boy was not disturbed & got comfortable, we realized his intentions. He was hot on the heels of a female for whom we could hear langur calls in the distance.
We hope our furry friend found his lady love !!

The jungle tells many magical stories at every turn. On a safari at Teliya zone of Pench, known for birding, we encountered this young male Malabar Pied Hornbill squawking gloriously to impress a potential mate, perched nearby.

Did You Know?? The Malabar Pied Hornbill is monogamous & mates for life. If either mate in a pair die, the other one will never mate again.

Spot The Stripes !! How many do you see??
Its said you dont see a tiger unless the tiger wants to be seen. This one was kind to announce its presence with a soft growl, just enough for us to hear.

Location not disclosed as photo was clicked outside safari zones near a village on a leisure stroll. Only after reporting the sighting to the nearest forest beat post & leaving did we zoom the pic to realise it had been more than 1.

Meet the Oriental Honey Buzzard !! This raptor is a daredevil, feeding mostly on bees & wasps by attacking the hive.
The one in the photo is a juvenile. As they reach adulthood, they turn a darker shade.
While the honey buzzard is an endemic bird in the Indian jungles, it leaves for colder regions for breeding during summers.

This is the story behind the video, a small insight into a tiger's life, a chapter of the battle for bloodlines at Tadoba.

Do notice in the video how our striped celeb T127 a.k.a Choti Madhu is constantly looking somewhere & notice her alert ears in the pics at the end.

The Story ::

A cool November morning safari for our tour group in Moharli buffers with foggy weather after unseasonal rains. Before an early breakfast halt, we had spotted Shambhu, an intruding male, lounging at this water body. He was being false mated by Choti Madhu who was expected to be nearby.

Choti Madhu is currently with Taru male & has cubs. Taru was at that time nursing injuries from a recent battle with Shambhu. A tigress often resorts to false mating by luring away an intruding male to protect her cubs. This is not reproductive as the tigress is not in estrous cycle. Interesting fact is at such times, the cubs are disciplined enough to stay alone & hungry till the mother returns.

After a hasty breakfast, we were back at this water body, eager for more tiger sighting. And surely enough, through the mist, on the other side was a tinge of orange in the greenish water.

This was Choti Madhu, her coat is brighter than Shambhu. She was looking around nervous & alert and soon started swimming. But where was she going??

Her nervous glances to the other side revealed her mindset. The easiest way for a tigress to make an intruding male lose her scent is by swimming away. Our celeb was trying to stealthily escape back to her hungry hidden cubs.

Knowing her general direction, there was a chance of spotting her up close on a nearby track. With instructions silently passed to gypsy drivers, our gypsies too sneaked away from the crowd at the water body.

Reaching the predicted track before others, we now had to split up & spread apart few hundred feet. If lucky, only one of our gypsy would get a close up. So we split up & waited.

But her majesty rewarded our efforts soon enough as she silently stepped out a few feet from our gypsy, a doting mother focused on her cubs ahead, her ears fully alert for the intruding male behind.

And we thought only humans are capable of high voltage drama. Our tigers are neither short on emotions nor intellect.

Thank you to those who read till the end patiently. This was but a small glimpse into the life of a tiger.

Some kids are brave. Meet this Sambar deer fawn.

While a fawn starts walking soon after birth, they are shy & stick close to the doe (mother). It was a surprise to have this little one stumbling alone bravely in front of our gypsy with the doe watching from a distance.

An interesting fact about Sambar - While in most deer species, mothers abandon their fawn & run during predator attacks, the Sambar doe are known to protect their young one.
