Save this post for your visit to the

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is the largest, first of its kind International contemporary arts exhibition in India that happens every two years in Fort Kochi, Ernakulam district in Kerala.

If you are an arts and aesthetics lover, a history buff, a design rat, a moving images aficionado: this exhibition is for you!

Even if you are not the above, and still want to experience or introduce an expansive narrative on the current and historical socio-political and cultural narratives of our country and the World, I encourage you to visit Kochi during this time of year just for the Biennale.

Knowing about contemporary world issues is something so ingrained in every native household now, that people from all parts of Kerala and non resident Keralites actually travel to Kochi with their families to witness this besides the rest of us!

It happens spread across several eclectic venues in the city of Kochi, for a span of three/four months beginning December.

Tickets are very nominally priced and you can use the single ticket across all venues on a particular day!

Seen here are some of my captures across locations : The Aspinwall House, Pepper House, Kashi Art Cafe, Fort Kochi, studios and others. The entire city becomes a hub for cultural exchanges and you will often find yourself exchanging thoughts over a cup of filter coffee or an affogato with strangers who are visiting the festival as well!

“In Our Veins flow Ink and Fire” , Spectres of the Sea”, “Shadow Circus ”, “The Public Life of Women”, Debbie Ding’s VR immersive artwork around the everyday kitchen, Anju Acharya’s anatomical floor length piece, Yugoslavia and Indian Women’s collective memories from 1978, “Land of the Roots”, Asim Waqif’s retelling of the chaos of contemporary urban spaces through a larger than life bamboo installation among many others this year made for such interesting experiences!

For those few hours, I was lost amidst the exhibits ambling along from venue to venue in tuktuks, and absorbed all the human mind could in a span of half a day!

There are several film, sound and art installations which will also leave you aroused, besides talks, screenings and musical performances.

Do not miss a chance to come to the it’s totally worth it Kerala Tourism

trips are a wholesome experience! Not only do we have early morning wake up calls to explore new spots, but we also sit together in the evenings and let our hair down…moms and kids both get time to bond with each other and we try to give them a taste of the local flavours..be it music, food or experiences. We TALK…because it helps when one meets as strangers and through these conversations we leave as lifelong friends.

This time, a local legend from Sohra, Tenny Gregory was invited to perform and spend some time with us. He spent hours with us and began with some really beautiful conversations about life and everything that we need to be grateful and mindful about… and then we sang some soulful numbers with him…as the chilly Sohra wind blew outside with trees swaying in the wind, we danced along with our kids…the energy that night was something else!

Umngot - A river that acts as a natural boundary between two countries… and is known to be the cleanest in Asia..

moms and kids enjoyed this river to their hearts’ content. From cliff jumping to boating, kayaking, floating and swimming in these waters, the thrill of seeing them immerse themselves with their children was unbeatable!

Your phone signals automatically catch Bangladesh network, so we turn off roaming or better still, switch off all network when we reach there after a challenging drive! Once you are there, its just you, these waters and the night sky…

For those planning to witness the natural phenomenon of absolutely transparent waters, a visit in the winter months (Nov end - December) is ideal as the dry season makes the river waters seem transparent when the sun rays fall on them. In the monsoons, this same river turns a murky brown and it changes colour as the rainfall decreases in the upper regions…

P.S. notice the rhythmic hand coordination of the boatmen in this reel…

Its going to be 2023 in a couple of months…and as I sit and contemplate about the months gone by (not over yet :) this year has been really satisfying for . Although we’ve done only two chapters this year, they have both been completely unique in design, format and ex*****on. Ive worked with some awesome travel partners this year and I hope to continue doing so in the coming year. I believe it is only through feedback and learning that I will make each next trip better for the ones travelling with me…and its imperative that I pick up what you want as I go along on this journey.

Well, I am always here for my community who are equally passionate and excited about travelling with their kids. So I thought I shall ask you first and see if we can align on what we want to experience together. I answer multiple DMs about upcoming trips every single day, and I want to give you an opportunity to let me know how and where you wish to travel with me. Who knows maybe we’ll make it happen together. So please answer the following in a comment only below:

1) What Indian/international destination would you wish to backpack to with your child?
2) Do you prefer a particular season (summer, winters, monsoons, autumn) or only on school holidays?
3) How long do you want the trip to be? 4/5 days or more than one week to ten days?
4) Would you want a completely raw experience (what the essence of a shared backpacking budget trip is) or are you looking for more custom exclusive experiences while retaining the backpacking style of travelling. These can be in stay, food, travel etc. (this is super important info for a trip curator)
5) Do you want the trip to be full of outdoor activities and experiences or would you also want some mindful learning experiences ?
6) Anything else that you want to suggest/share?

Go all out and share your comments and suggestions below for your travel wishlist:) Il definitely read them all and see if I can make your wishes come true 💗

Nongriat in Khasi means a ‘Village’ surrounded by steep cliffs and ‘ridges’…

Legend has it that the original inhabitants of Nongriat were skilled at knowing how to weave roots of rubber trees together by training them to form bridges made on either sides of a river…so villagers could easily cross and walk over to the other side. This carried on for hundreds of years and the results are the single and double decker root bridge that you see in most Meghalaya postcards.

The region is a tropical rainforest hundreds of years old, made up of sacred forested areas, where entry is forbidden and parts community forested land, where a plethora of species, spices and flora abound.

The only current way to reach the double decker root bridge is by trekking down 3500+ steps one way and then back up 3500+ steps again to Tyrna the base point of the trek.

It makes sense to spend a night around this region to fully take in the experience of sleeping next to a UNESCO World Heritage site. Go with the knowledge that the locals fear that a proper road built to reach here will threaten the natural ecosystem and the way they live in harmony with nature. Respect that when you live with them as a tourist.

After trekking down the previous day and spending time at the village overnight, we planned an early morning ‘explore and express’ session at the brink of dawn (around 5:30-6am), and gathered around the root bridge in different spots to pen down whatever we were feeling at that point.

Needless to say, this was one of the most heartfelt experiences on this trip…

Sharing some photos of the same…where everyone was lost in their own thoughts…youngest to oldest all feeling something unique…

In the last few days, I have felt more alive than I have felt in a long time.

Woken up by the morning sunshine on my face streaming through lightly drawn curtains as I I slept a stone throw’s distance from a centuries old living natural monument.

Had the cold cold river water touch my bare skin as I watched everyone take in the moment that was too overwhelming to express in words!

Glided my feet through rivers and narrow rivulets, unconsciously drank in sips of fresh water and sat watching little children swim, jump, play and do everything their heart desired…

Filled my being with freshly cooked food..with the simplest most basic ingredients but strangely delicious in a way that you don’t feel elsewhere in cities.

I’ve taken my time to walk every step with a gratefulness that made me experience these moments.

Hugged trees, felt little pricks of red ants, let my body sweat it out by slowly climbing down a scented forest full of species that I had spotted only in books, and then cooled down by dipping into a waterfall stream…

Had the most me time even though I was around a group of people that seemed so wonderful and full of beautiful energy that they brought to the trip!

This time, I took my time and let everyday unravel slowly…

Grateful to the Universe for making little things so beautiful!

✨Wrote a Letter to My Teenage Self✨

Recorded a podcast for “Dear Teenage Me” - a Spotify Original by Yuvaa.

This one is special, because I dug deep into my memories and reflected upon some of the most pivotal core memories that helped shape who I became and continue to become as I grow older. I ended up writing to my 16 year old self who was full of doubts and underconfidence at the time!

I grew up around a family of doctors and ended up believing I was destined to become one. Then something happened…that changed the course of my life forever and in a good way. You’l have to listen to the episode to know more…

Thank you Yuvaa@weareyuvaa for making me a part of this kickass podcast. Its much needed in today’s times when people find it so hard to express their emotions. If your kids are in their teens currently, please make them listen to this. I am sure it will help them somewhere.

Thanks to Suyash and team for being super patient and encouraging when I was recording this at the studio 🤗 and for coming up with this wonderful edit..

MILESTONE: started with just 6 mothers and 7 kids in December 2021…

is now a community of more than 500 mothers and their kids spread across India and outside India. We are adding to it as I type this…

Who would have thought last year around this time, it was just plans on paper and in my head…I was so unsure of a travelling community and my ability to curate something like this. It needs time, coordination and commitment and I have put in whatever I have and connected with some incredible partners along the way!

A mom and kids only, backpack style travel community from India💗 is now here and alive!

I have learnt so much in the last year, and its only the beginning!

Its been a passion project for sure and came out of a desire to see women just like myself discover themselves and their bond with kids through unique journeys.

My first solo parent backpack trip with my kid was a journey of self discovery! As i kept interacting with moms over the years virtually, I realised that when a mother wants to take a trip, its not just to explore a new destination; its that innate desire to nurture their inner beings within, to break free from the societal norms of conventional travelling, and to strengthen the bond of a mother and child.

If you think my journeys are brave, think of these hundreds of women who are going to create history by exploring far corners and further inspire other moms to start travelling by themselves with kids! The effect and impact will multiply organically…thats the power of a community!

Here’s to forever my badass ladies!!💗🥳🍹You all know who you are…

✨ITS ALL ABOUT THE JOURNEY✨

From not knowing how to hold a baby in my arms while feeding her, to growing with her and venturing outdoors on my own…its been a ride for sure!

Its the look in their eyes, the constant reassurance that Mom will be there as their lifelong companion and friend.

Its in the little things and the big things that we remember our journeys as mothers. Its the ‘in-between’ moments that we will hold onto. These memories are what will define and shape them as adults.

We do our best, and leave the rest!

Its my mom’s birthday on the 9th of September and I thought I’ll introduce her to my awesome Instafam!

I keep getting messages about what a cool mom I am to my kid, and you know where I got all that from: ‘I got it from my Mama’

Let’s make her feel special. Im going to ask her some interesting questions and we will talk about her very special childhood, her long and rewarding career as a teacher and fulltime working mom, her transition post retirement to a passionate storyteller for her Youtube channel ‘Storytelling with Veena’, along with being grandmom to two beautiful kids, Arianna and Zaiden! ❤️ Oh, and I am also going to ask how she feels about me travelling alone with my daughter :)

I am planning to have loads of fun with mom on the 9th and I will also make her narrate some interesting stories, so don’t forget to join this very special INSTA LIVE SESSION with your kids right here! They and you will surely enjoy it✨

Here it is… the official teaser video made specially for - chapter 2 Goa!

So at the onset, it captures the essence of what our trip was… we covered a side of Goa that is beyond the stereotypes of sun, sand and sea!

Soul.travelling really helped make this trip a possibility with their unique trails and we customised it to suit moms and kids. We discussed it down to the last detail, and I have to thank .travelling for being the most amazing travel business partner! They had us sorted from Day 1 and ensured we had a super experience on each day, while continuing to follow up every evening to make sure plans were on track. Kudos to Zahur and the the entire team for the kickass experience!

Acolmeia for being the perfect accommodation and hospitality partners on this trip! Special thanks to Dhruv for being the sweetest and most patient host…

The moms who booked this trip .trueliving7 and I dont think I could have asked for a more ‘Josh Type’ group for this Goa chapter!! You girls made the trip happen with your continuous support and excitement. I will always cherish every day spent together with you and your beautiful children! ❤️

As for Sachin, who quit his engineering job to follow his passion..and who I connected with after speaking to several photographers for this trip… cant thank you enough for contributing to this the way you have! You completely understood the essence and vision to the T, and with you talent and hard work made these beautiful shots happen!

So convinced the 5 moms to record video messages which come towards the end of this video! I had absolutely no idea they would all conspire to make this beautiful beautiful video happen! 🥺🥺

Today, I am so grateful I chose to pursue this mad dream of a backpacking community for moms in India!!

Enjoy the video!!

In the susegaad life, one spends lazy afternoons in the company of good friends, good food and great music.

We spent one such afternoon chilling in a family owned Goan heritage home. Mesmerized by the tunes of Ivan with our kids adapting to the unique Goan lifestyle…

Like they say all over in Goa, Mog Asun !

✨HOW TO WORK TOWARDS DESIGNING YOUR OWN LIFE?✨

Ever heard of a concept called ‘life designing?’

I have been thinking a great deal and I now concur from years of deliberation that its our choices that have the power to design our lives. We all like to blame circumstances, physiological changes, and external factors when we do not see an affective change in our lives. You know what? Its been in our hands THE WHOLE TIME!!

A choice we must have made at different points in our lives have led us to what we are today. Be it picking a certain lifestyle, habits and relationships..we have consciously (or unconsciously) made those choices. For years, I felt that I was caught in some sort of a situation where I was unable to change the course of my life. I kept pinpointing factors that may have led to this, but each time the source was me! I was choosing to continue the cycle of day and night with no significant change to my internal happiness.

Its taken me a lot of time to come to terms with my own choices, and how I was not going to change because my choices were such.

I slowly started moving towards designing a life that may be good for me. That had nothing to do with money, a beautiful home, having kids and other assets or getting a dream job!

It had to do with choosing situations, people, and goals that made me feel internally at peace with myself. I am not kidding when I say this, but I saw the World move after I made different choices. It was as if life was just waiting for me to design my own destiny, and I quickly saw myself and my surroundings change. I became much more confident about my weaknesses, less judgmental as a person and it made me a kinder human being overall (or so I’de like to believe).

The glass is always going to be half empty if you do not acknowledge the choices you make at different points in your life.

I may not have the World at my feet today, and I am still struggling with basics…but I can feel the shift in my soul internally and that’s brought so much peace into my life.

So think about designing a life based on choices, and see if anything would change if made a different choice?

A depiction of the community by a fellow mom who joined me on a group trip!

Her doodle just fits in perfectly with the vision behind this community. A
safe space free from stereotypes, mindless gossip and judgement! A space where a woman can look beyond just being the primary caregivers for their children…a space where they will learn more about themselves by taking journeys with just their kids! ✨Getting to know each other✨

- Goa 2022 saw the moms arriving from different parts of India to their abode for the next few days!

A huge part of my endeavour with BWM trips is to make them feel welcome and give the kids a chance to meet and bond before we begin travelling together.

During this evening, our accommodation and experience partners and .travelling welcomed the group and spoke about the idea behind collaborating and coming together for - Goa!

It was the first night when we were all together for the first time, ready to embark on a journey that left as us friends for life❤️

Gifting partner had these extremely well designed travel diaries for the children they filled up during their trip!
plantable seed stationary kept the theme of conscious travelling alive and the moms and kids were presented with some curated items to welcome them to this very special trip!

May we find double the love each time we encounter hate…may we first remember that we humans have a beating heart and a mind that is capable of so much love..if we just give ourselves a chance!!

May we find our wings and learn to conquer our fears…one at a time!

From the greens of Goa, its us wishing you a very Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind!

✨I am an aunt to the most beautiful boy✨

My brother and sis in law very recently had a baby boy and I’m over the moon😘✨✨

Ari was super excited to welcome her baby cousin and made posters for him to welcome him home❤️

My brother’s been the most amazing uncle to Ari and spoilt her silly all these years since she was born…I could see the natural parenting instinct in him when he would hold Ari as a baby! Its so nice to see him holding his little one now…🧑🏻‍🍼

Its been a very special July as Zaiden came to planet Earth on the 12th of July through a very persevering mom who was completely prepared to welcome him like a pro! 😆

Swipe right see the day we went to visit them in the hospital with my cousin sis

How’ve you all been? Just came here to say hello and hope you have a great week ahead! Between wiping off hot chocolate from the floor, researching, sending dottie to school and working as best as I currently can, its nice to see my evenings are looking more relaxed now than it was until sometime ago. Ive consciously decided to get up and put a stop to whatever I am doing around 5 (even at home), and just dedicate that time to my well being.

I realise living as a solo parent means you have zero time to yourself and often it means snatching those few minutes of peace in the shower when no one can barge in demanding food or complain of a toothache.

When I was also working through the evenings and sometimes nights (i still do sometimes), it would drive me mental just trying to find that balance as a working mom. Im trying consciously to keep off scrolling the phone, and try my best to finish off the day’s work earlier. Even if it means certain things are left unattended, I will just let the pile be.

I’m going to keep putting these very real moments(read static photos) on the ‘gram because heck! I don’t want to be pushed into an algorithm that demands more videos and 24/7 cookie cutter entertainment to the scrolling audience.
I’ve always been here for real and I value these honest confessions. As exciting as my life looks like to some, its equally challenging to make it work on a daily basis without any real help! I will keep trying and I know you are here to stay if you are reading this ❤️

This photo is from last year when I was visiting hubby in the pandemic when we were all working remotely.

✨WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN MY COMMUNITY?✨

As I type this, we are a community of more than 500 mothers with young kids ( newborns, infants, lap babies, toddlers, some even moms-to-be) who are just looking forward to travelling together. I dreamt of this safe space since 2016 (because I didn’t get one) and today, its fast becoming a place where we are platform independent and connected!!

1) You get notified of all future trips before it goes live on social media. That gives you an upper hand to make decisions and book the trip before anyone else gets to know.

2) You get to travel like the way I did and still do. Keeping the comfort, safety and wellbeing of your child in mind. My favourite locations, my favourite partners..you get access to them as well.

3) You get to travel with my child and me. Unlike other tour packages when someone is sitting in an office while planning your trip, Im often on the road looking at what works and what doesn’t. When I come along with you, its the added reassurance of having someone that has actually planned the trip come along with you.

4) We dont judge!!! Whatever your personal situation, we are a safe community that encourages moms to be themselves, and also do whatever makes them feel good and free on the trip. I am a huge believer of personal choices and space, and I want my moms to have their me time on trips, as well as engage with others when they want to. Just stare at space and I’l leave you alone to it!! ❤️

5) Travelling with kids as solo parents is tough! I know this…and its good to have a group where we dont judge moms based on how their kids behave on the trip! So no one is going to ask questions on your parenting situation. You do you, we just want you to bond unconditionally on the trip with your child!

6) Im a stickler for being kind and being serious about my work and my passion. Kindness and sincerity tops everything else for me, and I will make sure that this community remains one!

To join it, all you need to do is DM me your childs age, your whatsapp number and email id. you will see why it makes sense to follow me here and be a part of my personal group as well.

Had the best time meeting small businesses and home owners that are working in the tourism industry in South Africa.

Its these locals that really bring to life the ethos of a destination, and its important for us as travellers to use their services rather than global players who run chains and packages and have a fixed service they provide across destinations.

My first host was South African of Dutch origin running a very cute homestay in Johannesburg. Then there was Bernadette who works for the in Tsitsikamma, a local who commutes everyday from the village nearby.

Followed by Kelvin from , a very affable guy from Zimbabwe who runs a small travel agency for local experiences.

Then there is Bongani a native who runs his own safari tours in the Kruger region, while Samora from Durban is a local experiences host we connected with in Cape Town. He directed us to some amazing local South African delicacies in a restaurant he generally eats at.

We then met Thebe who is an Uber driver from Pretoria but also takes along tourists on intercity trips. He made me speak to his children and we wished them goodnight because he was far away making a living working for us.

Lastly, Charmaine who manages .lodge_official who told us about her amazing experiences running a jungle lodge in the Wild…

All of these people are working locally in the country, doing their own bit towards showing tourists a side of South Africa! It is upto us as International and responsible travellers to engage these local businesses and learn more about the country from them. It beats going through an International tour operator and witnessing the country through a cocoon that is an airconditioned bus/taxi and a hotel that feels the same no matter which part of the World you are in.

A reminder to indulge and experience a little outside the comfort zone, and truly meet people who make up the local economy in a destination!

Live local, eat local, buy local (as far as that word as stretches in a tourism perspective)
