Those who have never seen a leopard under favourable conditions in his natural surroundings can have no conception of the grace of movement, and beauty of colouring, of this the most graceful and the most beautiful of all animals in our Indian jungles."

Crested Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis cheela)

As its name suggests, this bird of prey specializes in catching reptiles including snakes and lizards. Alas, the twig was in the way and blew away when approached. The snake was led through the paddy fields to this tree, then it went into the forest with its lunch.

This raptor exhibits the perching hunting technique, where it will usually lie motionless to track down any prey on the ground. Once the target is locked on it will fly straight towards the prey to capture it, however, when a venomous snake is encountered it uses a different strategy. It will stay on its side and use its wings to distract it, waiting for the right moment to get a hold of its head. Its feet are designed for heavy scales and this certainly helps prevent snakebite to some extent.

A Crested Eagle - waiting patiently for its prey at Corbett !!
This raptor often sits motionless from a high perch watching for prey. When prey is found it drops almost straight down to pounce. They often feed on snakes, giving them their name. In addition to snakes it catches reptiles as well as small mammals and birds. It will take a dead snake whenever it finds one. They are often seen soaring over their territory in pairs.
Crested serpent eagles are apex predators and at the top of their food chain. They are a good indicator of the health of the ecosystem they occupy. They control snake populations and also those of other small mammals and reptiles.

The Hair Crested Drongo

☞ Captured in kalagarh tiger reserve

The hair-crested drongo is an Asian bird of This species was formerly considered "spangled drongo" – formerly used for both – is now usually reserved.

It is native from Bangladesh, India, and Bhutan through Indochina to China, Indonesia, and Brunei. Hair-crested drongos move in small flocks and are very noisy. The "spangled drongo" is native on the east coast of Australia and its name is pejorative slang for a silly person. This may be due to its strange chattering and cackling.

Asian Elephants are seen in many national parks of India. They used to roam the entire length and breadth of India, but due to human population increase resulting in habitat fragmentation they are now restricted to much smaller areas.

They can still be seen in the terai foothills of Himalayas, from Dudhwa, Jim Corbett, Katarniaghat, Rajaji national parks in the region have a good population of the Elephants. In north-east India as well they are seen in practically all the national parks, similarly in southern India as well.

In central India the state of Chattisgarh has a small population as well, a section of which over last 3 years has made Bandhavgarh National Park their home.

Joy ride on elephant back has mostly been discontinued in most of the parks barring a few. The forest department in many national parks employ elephants for patrolling purposes. There are regions which cannot be accessed on foot, this is where elephant patrolling is of immense use.

Good time to photograph elephants is when the parks are open, but February onward they start to spend more time around the water holes, and rivers.

Long tailed Shrike
The long-tailed shrike or rufous-backed shrike (Lanius schach) is a member of the bird family Laniidae, the shrikes. They are found widely distributed across Asia and there are variations in plumage across the range. The species ranges across much of Asia, both on the mainland and the eastern archipelagos. The eastern or Himalayan subspecies, L. s. tricolor, is sometimes called the black-headed shrike. Although there are considerable differences in plumage among the subspecies, they all have a long and narrow black tail, have a black mask and forehead, rufous rump and flanks and a small white patch on the shoulder. It is considered to form a superspecies with the grey-backed shrike (Lanius tephronotus) which breeds on the Tibetan Plateau.
The long-tailed shrike is a typical shrike, favouring dry open habitats and found perched prominently atop a bush or on a wire. The dark mask through the eye is broad and covers the forehead in most subspecies and the whole head is black in subspecies tricolor and nasutus. The tail is narrow and graduated with pale rufous on the outer feathers. Subspecies erythronotus has the grey of the mantle and upper back suffused with rufous while the southern Indian caniceps has pure grey. A small amount of white is present at the base of the primaries. The bay-backed shrike is smaller and more contrastingly patterned and has a more prominent white patch on the wing. The sexes are alike in plumage
