One of the holiest Hindu festivals, Maha Shivratri, commemorates Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati's marriage and many other cosmic events related to him. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva married Maa Shakti, his divine consort, for a second time on this night. मकर संक्रान्ति (मकर संक्रांति) भारत का प्रमुख पर्व है। मकर संक्रांति (संक्रान्ति) पूरे भारत और नेपाल में किसी न किसी रूप में मनाया जाता है। पौष मास में जब सूर्य मकर राशि पर आता है तभी इस पर्व को मनाया जाता है। वर्तमान शताब्दी में यह त्योहार जनवरी माह के चौदहवें या पन्द्रहवें दिन ही पड़ता है, इस दिन सूर्य धनु राशि को छोड़ मकर राशि में प्रवेश करता है।
ऐसी मान्यता है कि इस दिन भगवान भास्कर अपने पुत्र शनि से मिलने स्वयं उसके घर जाते हैं। चूँकि शनिदेव मकर राशि के स्वामी हैं, अत: इस दिन को मकर संक्रान्ति के नाम से जाना जाता है। । मकर संक्रान्ति के दिन ही गंगाजी भगीरथ के पीछे-पीछे चलकर कपिल मुनि के आश्रम से होती हुई सागर में जाकर मिली थीं।

Kuari pass is a mountain lovers’ delight during the winter season. You have an unending vista of the biggest mountains in India opening up right from day one. You even get to see the clearest view of the full face of Mt Nanda Devi, India’s highest mountain.

According to Hindu legend, the god Vishnu sat in meditation at this place. During his meditation, Vishnu was unaware of cold weather. Lakshmi, his consort, protected him in the form of the Badri tree (jujube or Indian date, called 'ber' in Hindi). Pleased by the devotion of Lakshmi, Vishnu named the place Badrika Ashrama. According to the tradition, Yama had two sons, Nara, and Narayana—both of which are modern names of Himalayan mountains. They chose the place to spread their religion and each of them wed the spacious valleys in the Himalayas. Searching for an ideal place to set up a hermitage, they came across the other four Badris of the Pancha Badri, namely Bridha Badri, Yoga Badri, Dhyana Badri and Bhavisha Badri. They finally found the hot and cold spring behind the Alaknanda River and named it "Badri Vishala."

भुकुंट बाबा को केदारनाथ का पहला रावल माना जाता है। उन्‍हें यहां का क्षेत्रपाल माना जाता है। बाबा केदार की पूजा से पहले केदारनाथ भुकुंट बाबा की पूजा किए जाने का विधान है और उसके बाद विधिविधान से केदानाथ मंदिर के कपाट खोले जाते हैं।भुकुंट भैरव का यह मंदिर केदारनाथ मंदिर से आधा किमी दूर दक्षिण दिशा में स्थित है। यहां मूर्तियां बाबा भैरव की हैं जो इसी प्रकार से बिना छत के स्‍थापित की गई हैं। भैरव को भगवान शिव का ही एक रूप माना जाता है। पुजारियों के अनुसार, हर साल मंदिर के कपाट खोले जाने से पहले मंगलवार और शनिवार को भैरवनाथ की पूजा की जाती है।
