Nohsngithiang Waterfall mostly known as Seven Sisters Waterfalls is the second spot of the second day at Sohra(Cherrapunjee). During the end of the rainy season, we found the waterfall almost dry.
At a distance of 4 km from Sohra(Cherrapunjee) Bus Stop, Nohsngithiang Falls is a picturesque waterfall located at Mawsmai village in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. Also known as Seven Sister Falls and Mawsmai Falls, it is one of the tallest waterfalls in India and among the major places to visit in Sohra(Cherrapunjee).
Located in the wettest place on Earth, Sohra(Cherrapunjee), Nohsngithiang Falls is a seven segmented waterfall that cascades down from a height of 315 m (1,033 feet) and has an average width of 70 m (230 feet). The falls plunge over the top of limestone cliffs of the Khasi Hills only during the rainy season. The seven segments of the waterfalls symbolize the seven sister states in the northeast namely Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram and Meghalaya.
The best time to visit this place is during the monsoon, when the streams are flooded with water and flow down rapidly forming a perennial rainbow, which gives the spectacular views for the tourists. One can get the magnificent view of the falls from the viewpoint situated at Mawsmai village as there is no possibility to get into the water. People can also view the falls from the Eco Park which has been constructed on a plateau on top of the falls.

NohKaLikai Falls
NohKaLikai Falls is the tallest plunge waterfall in India, dropping from a height of 1,115 feet. The pool of water at the bottom has a distinctive greenish color. It's surrounded by lush greenery and often covered in misty clouds. This waterfall mostly relies on rainwater to flow.
The name "Nohkalikai" has a tragic story associated with it. The legend goes that a woman named Likai, who lived in the village near the falls, lost her husband and had to provide for her daughter. To make ends meet, she had to work as a porter, carrying heavy loads. Her work took her far from her daughter, and when she returned, she found that her new husband was abusive and her daughter was neglected.
One day, he made a delicious dinner for his wife. Likai, who had a long day at work and was very hungry, couldn't find her baby. She thought the baby might be at the neighbor's house, so she started eating the meal her husband had prepared.
The man was so jealous of the baby, that he chopped the baby and cooked her for the meal that he fed to Likai! He threw away the head and bones of the baby before Likai reached home!!
Likai saw a tiny finger that she knew belonged to her daughter.
In a fit of despair, she rushed to the falls and jumped, giving the falls its name, which means "Leap of Likai."
This tragic legend adds a haunting and poignant element to the natural beauty of Nohkalikai Falls, making it a place of both awe-inspiring natural wonder and a reminder of the complexities of human emotions and life's hardships.

KEEP CALM AND GO FISHING ๐ฃ . . Meghalaya is a state blessed with pristine waters, streams, rivers, and lakes where various species of fishes dwell. We are a land charmed by myths, legends and folklores, where the bond between human and nature is impeccable. A common scene in the rural areas of Meghalaya. Fishing is a favourite hobby for people of the state. For some it is a sport, whereas for others it is a source of livelihood. As for the soundtrack we've decided to use this local song "Shi Eh! Ka Khwai Dohkha - Justin Sun" since it's one of the most influential and common song amongst fishermen, anglers, and fishing enthusiasts of the state. The song talks about many scenarios and events that happens when one goes out fishing which every local here can relate to ๐ . We wish we could transcribe the entire lyrics but it's impossible. Well, we hope you enjoy the rural fishing scenes ๐ฆ . . Share & Follow Duia Trailblazers for unique travel experiences in Meghalaya ๐ .
