CHAOS BEFORE SPITI – Part VI (Earlier parts in previous posts) We had to help the stranded tourists. 3 tourists and the bus driver hopped into our car and S drove slowly through the winding snow-covered roads Soon we reached Kunzum temple. Every local driver passing through the Kunzum pass, stops here and rings its bell. It is a ritual. This is supposed to bring good luck for your journey. We were doing alright on time and the tourists were more than eager to stop here. Kunzum temple is magical! It is not an architectural marvel. It is rustic and very small. However, if you stand here amidst the flags, mountains, wind, and the snow, you will feel amazing. It is tough to define - You will have to experience it! Most people miss it because they will be crossing this place late in the evening. We reached the next town, dropped the passengers, and made sure that the driver got a vehicle and snow chains.He headed back for the remaining passengers.The headlines of the next day, spoke about how 14 tourists were rescued by the local authorities. Yours truly did not find a mention – Doesn’t matter! We reached Spiti around 8pm. I had just entered the hotel lobby when I heard the shriek of a woman. “Why don’t you listen to what I tell you. You are useless” Judging by the mehndi on her hand, she was newly married. Judging by the helpless look of the man, at whom she was shrieking, he was her brand new husband.Probably on their honeymoon. “Best wishes for the next 30 years buddy” Those words would have been perfect, had I said them. I slept like a baby and when I woke up the next day, the sight that I saw, made all this drama, to get to Spiti, worthwhile. But for that we will need a new story!
