Wayanad is a north east district of Kerala. It is set high on the Western Ghats with altitudes ranging from 700 to 2100 meters. The district was formed on 1 November 1980 as the 12th district in Kerala. About 888.92 sq.km of area of the district is under forest. Wayanad has there municipal town Kalpetta, Mananthavady and Sultan Bathery. There are many indigenous tribals in this area.
POPULAR PLACE FOR VISIT:
BANASURA SAGAR DAM: This dam across the Karamanathodu River, a tributary of River Kabini, in Kalpetta, Wayanad is considered to be the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia. The dam attraction is ideally placed in the foothills of Banasura hill, . which got its name from Banasura. Banasura hill is the third largest peak in the Western Ghats. CHEMBRA PEAK: Chembra peak is highest peak in Wayanad (2100 m). The peak is an visible from almost all parts of Wayanad.The place is an ideal destination for trekking activities. The trekking charges for a group of 10 members Rs. 500 and Foreigners Rs. 1,000 for group.
KURUVA ISLAND: This Island is a protected river delta, comprising a cluster of island over the middle of Kabini River in Wayanad. Spread with rich flora and fauna. The geographical peculiarity of this island makes this place evergreen with a serene ambience. The uninhabited island is home to rare species of birds, Orchids, herbal plants etc. Coming so much closer to the nature and might be feeling Kuruva island as a nature's gift to Wayanad.
POOKODE LAKE: The beautiful freshwater lake in Wayanad. Pookode lake lays 15 km from Kalpetta. Nestled between evergreen forest and Western Ghats, the lake is spread over 13 acre and is 40 m deep. Making this place an ideal location for photographers and nature lovers. The sight of wild animals and birds in the surrounding forest.
MUTHANGA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY: This sanctuary is a rainforest spread over an area of 345 sq km, the sanctuary is an above of rich flora and fauna. The most deciduous forest of Muthanga is blessed with varieties of trees and other plants. Maruthi, Karimaruthi, Rosewood, venteak, Bengal etc. Wild animals like Elephant, Tiger, Panthers, Jungle Cats, Civet Cats, Monkeys and wild Dogs etc. The sanctuary is also blessed with its endless population of birds like Peacocks, Babblers, Cuckoos, Owls, Woodpeckers, Jungle Fowls etc.
EDAKKAL CAVE: These caves are located 1200 m above the sea level on Ambukutty mala. The caves were discovered by Fred Fawcett, the then superintendent of police of the Malabar district in 1890 during his hunting trip to Wayanad. Edakkal caves are famous for its pictorial paintings, which are considered to be of 6000 BC. Inside the cave is two chambers. The lower chamber is 18 ft long, 12 ft wide and 10 ft high and the upper chamber is 96 ft long, 22 ft wide and 18 ft high. Here is sight of human carvings, animal figures and objects used by humans on the walls of the caves. These carvings give great evidence for a highly civilized society who lived in the pre historic age. Edakkal is the only known place in India with stone age carvings.

THIRUNELLI TEMPLE: The Temple surrounded by beautiful hills and forest dedicated to Lord Maha Vishnu. The Thirunelli Temple is constructed as per ancient temple architecture. The rituals In this Temple are performed on the banks of stream Papanashini, which originates from the Brahmagiri hills. The sterm is considered to have medicinal powers. On the western side of the Thirunelli Temple is sight of cave Temple Gunnika. This Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Thirunelli is blessed with the trinities - Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.
