McLaren was founded in 1963 by New Zealand Formula 1 racer Bruce McLaren and American Ted Mayer, who registered Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd to participate in the Tasman auto racing series
The 1970 season was tragic for the team — on June 2, during testing of a new car for the American CanAm series, Bruce McLaren died. During the following years, the team participated with varying success in both Formula 1 and other competitions. In 1979, after a third consecutive unsuccessful season, it was decided to terminate McLaren's participation in the American series, which turned McLaren into an exclusively "creative" team.
The beginning of car production
In 1989, McLaren started developing road cars and in 1992 released its first model. McLaren F1, as the name implies, with the maximum share of "creative" technologies. In just 6 years of production, 106 copies were produced.
