The Nilgiri Tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius, former name is Hemitragus hylocrius) is an endangered mountain ungulate endemic to the southern part of the Western Ghats. The species is found in a roughly 400 km stretch in the Western Ghats which falls in the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The local distribution of the species is attributed to the animal’s preference for the habitat with grasslands with steep rocky cliff shelters.

The Eravikulam National Park has the highest density and largest surviving population of Nilgiri tahr.

The climate in Munnar in the last few days has taken everyone by surprise. The extreme cold in Munnar continues with the lowest temperature recorded in the season. Morning hours are covered in a white carpet on the valleys and grasslands in Munnar. The temperature has started touching the freezing point with two places recording sub zero level. Munnar, considered the Kashmir of Kerala, is blanketed with thick frost and reported minus 3 degree Celsius this past week. A thin blanket of frost was seen in many parts of the hill station particularly in the higher reaches of Sevenmalay and Lockhart, Munnar town, Lakshmi, Ellapetty and Kundala had temperature of zero degree Celsius on.
