This is the town of Oberammergau, Germany. Once a decade, this tiny town of just 5000 people explodes with life, as travellers from around the globe come to see the decennial performance of the Oberammergau Passion Play - that has been performed here since 1633.
As plague ravaged 17th-century Europe, the villagers of Oberammergau prayed and promised to perform the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ every 10 years if they were saved from the deadly illness. The villagers were miraculously spared, and their descendants have been fulfilling their promise for almost four centuries.

Today we’re announcing the next step in our net zero journey and formally committing to science-based reduction targets. Our company-wide emission reduction targets are currently under review by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and will be announced later this year. Science-based targets ensure we reduce our emissions in line with keeping the global temperature well below a warming of 1.5° C by mid-century.
Achieving science-based targets requires bold and ambitious action across our business, and we have immense opportunity for impact. Our Scope 1 + 2 target will tackle the emissions from 500+ vehicles, 13 owned Uniworld ships, 18 Red Carnation Hotels, 5 owned accommodations, 30+ offices and 1 winery. Our Scope 3 target will reduce emissions from waste and water use, business air travel, and our largest Scope 3 source: emissions from our trips.
