The participants to our Week Without Walls camp getting close to the rural lifestyle through their cameras. In our camps, we organise photography workshops with experienced and seasoned photographers to give the participants an insight into the world of photography. They impart great technical and aesthetic knowledge amongst the students, and inform them how a camera is just a tool, and we don't need the most high-end equipment in the world to capture some awesome photos!..

The kids of our Week Without Walls camp bonding with kids of local community over a fun and engaging evening games! Sports is the best ice breaker, and nothing builds up friendship and camaradrie like a few rounds of kabaddi or rumal jhapatta (or as we city folks call it - dog and the bone)!..

The glorious Himalayan sunrise, seen from the anicent Kunjapuri Temple by the participants on our Week Without Walls adventure camp at Rishikesh.

To catch this amazing sunrise, the kids had to be up at 4 in the morning, and many of them were hesitant and nervous about waking up that early, but once at the sunrise spot, their sleepiness quickly fade away as they witness one of the most beautiful mornings of their lives!..

Happy locals are happy to see up! 😇

While hiking through the hills and forests of Shivalik range, we pass through some stunning Himalayan hamlets. There we get to see the glimpses of the ups and down, the benefits and difficulties of living in the hills. The locals are often very warm and welcoming, and are just as intrigued with us, as we are with them!

UPCOMING CAMP - June 5th to 8th, 2023 @ Rishikesh from Delhi.

📌 Do you know?

Snow leopards have a unique adaptation known as a "long, thick, and flexible tail." This tail helps them maintain balance and acts as a blanket to cover their face and body during extreme cold.

Can you spot hidden snow leopards in the picture?

Unlike the similar-looking cheetahs, which have a unique social order among felids wherein the adult females are solitary, while adult males are not, leopards are much more solitary, and the different sexes come together only for mating purposes!

ANIMAL OF THE WEEK - ASIAN ELEPHANT

An elephant's trunk is actually a long nose used for smelling, breathing, trumpeting, drinking, and also for grabbing things—especially a potential meal. The trunk alone contains about 40,000 muscles. African elephants have two fingerlike features on the end of their trunk that they can use to grab small items, while the Asian elephants found in India have just one.

ANIMAL OF THE WEEK - ASIAN ELEPHANT

It is common myth that elephants drink water through their trunks. The trunk is vital to the feeding and drinking process for an elephant, but they cannot drink water through their trunks alone. Elephants suck water up part way into their trunk and then use the trunk to spray water into their mouth to drink.

ANIMAL OF THE WEEK - ASIAN ELEPHANT

On average, when fully-grown, bulls are about 9.0 feet tall at the shoulder and 4 tonnes in weight, while cows are smaller at about 8 feet at the shoulder and 2.7 tonnes in weight.

The largest bull elephant ever recorded was shot by the Maharajah of Susang in the Garo Hills of Assam, India in 1924, it weighed an estimated 7.5 tonnes, stood at 11.5 feet tall at the shoulder and was 26.4 feet long from head to tail. There are reports of larger individuals as tall as 12 feet!

ANIMAL OF THE WEEK - ASIAN ELEPHANT

Baby elephants do, in fact, suck their trucks just like baby humans suck their thumbs. And they do it for the same reason: comfort. Just like human newborns, elephant calves are born with a strong sucking reflex. This helps them instinctively know what to do when they are near their mother's breast.

Aside from the comfort it provides, trunk sucking helps an elephant calf learn how to use and control this lengthy appendage. With more than 50,000 individual muscles in the trunk, you can imagine how complicated it is to get it to do what you want it to do at any given time. Sucking on the trunk helps a young elephant learn how to control and manipulate the muscles in the trunk so that it can fine-tune its use.

Jenkins's shrew is an extremely unknown member of the Soricidae family of small mole-like mammals, except the fact that it is endemic to South Andaman Island of India.

Judging from its external appearance, you'd think of it as a long-nosed mouse, but it is not a rodent, as mice are. It is, in fact, a much closer relative of hedgehogs and moles! Shrews have sharp, spike-like teeth, whereas rodents have gnawing front incisor teeth.

The Malabar civet is a viverrid endemic to the Western Ghats of India which has been listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List as the population is estimated to number fewer than 250 mature individuals. Until a few decades ago, local merchants in Kerala reared Malabar civets to obtain civetone - an extract from the scent gland, which was used in medicine, and as an aromatic. Sadly, it is now seriously threatened by habitat destruction and fragmentation.

The cultural show which we organise on the last day of our adventure camps gives the students an opportunity to interact and appreciate the communities which live in and around the forest and play a crucial role in safeguarding our natural heritage. In times of unprecedented climate crisis, we can learn so much from these communities and their eco-friendly and carbon neutral way of life.
