Buddhism in Sri Lanka

Every year, millions of pilgrims visit Kandy in Sri Lanka to pay their respect to a shrine that houses Buddha’s remains. There are only 8 such shrines in the world and Kandy is counted among the most important ones. When Buddhism started spreading its roots and went beyond India, the first two countries that embraced the religion of peace and ahimsa were Gandhara and Ceylon. The ancient country of Ceylon is the modern Sri Lanka where the oldest Buddhist traditions are still kept alive. Today, the followers of Buddhism in Sri Lanka belong to the Theravada sect of Buddhists.
If you are traveling to Sri Lanka and want to experience the journey of this religion in its truest sense then you need to know some important facts.
1. Birthplace of Pali Literature

As the Buddhism spread in Sri Lanka, the monks started noting down the important events and historical facts and figures. The Buddhists started to preserve their work in Pali Canon and its evidence can still be found in the Aluvihare Rock Temple where the Pali scriptures date back to 1st century BCE.

2. Beautiful Cave Temples

The Buddhists are popular to meditate away from the worldly desires and chaos. They choose caves in the mountains and forests. The evidence of their way of life can be found all around the world. Buddhism in Sri Lanka, The Dambulla Cave Temple is one such series where the Buddhists are known to be meditating during the ancient days.
Today Dambulla Cave Temples is popular as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. These cave temples are some of the most sacred sites in Sri Lanka. Spread in a region with 80 caves that have intricate carvings, scriptures, statues, and paintings depicting life and teachings of Buddha.

3. Pindurangala Royal Cave Temple

An Important highlight of the impact of Buddhism in Sri Lanka can be witness in the form of beautiful cave temples of Pindurangala. When the Buddhist Bikkhus (monks) requested the King Kashyapa of Ceylon to arrange for a different place for their meditation, he ordered for the construction of a temple over a massive rock named Pindurangala.
This cave temple is a majestic place to visit. Covered with picturesque surroundings, the serene atmosphere brings you closer to the tranquil state in which these caves are kept.

4. The Temple of Tooth

When Buddha was cremated, his remains were divided among eight of his devotees. One of these remains is still in Kandy at Sri Dalada Maligawa. Sri Lanka Tourism provides every kind of facility to the pilgrims who visit this place for Lord Buddha’s blessings. This place is revered by Buddhists all around the world and His Holiness Dalai Lama visits here to offer his respects.

5. The Festival of Buddha’s Birth and Enlightenment

Wesak is the most revered festival among the Buddhists of Sri Lanka. This festival celebrates the birth and enlightenment of Lord Buddha. Devotees from all around the world visit Sri Lanka to commemorate his life and teachings. Sri Lanka Tourism organizes interesting cultural activities at major Buddhist heritage sites.
The Buddhist temples in the country has beautiful decoration and Wesak paper lanterns are hung everywhere. Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo is the best place to experience this festival. Enormous pandals and bamboo frameworks are depicting the life of Lord Buddha and entire streets are covered with a myriad of colourful bulbs.

During this time of social distancing, books are able to inspire us in so many ways, engage our brains in ways expanding beyond the walls of our homes.
Besides being a great entertainer, this can be a great use of your me-time, simply because you will enhance your knowledge of people, society, culture and history.

Research suggests that reading books keeps you smarter and more empathetic. Perhaps, the secret to getting through these times all in one piece is hidden in one of those books lying on your bookshelf unread for the longest time?

International Mother Language Day

International Mother Language Day (IMLD) is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism. First announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999, it was formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly with the adoption of UN resolution 56/262 Multilingualism in 2002. Mother Language Day is part of a broader initiative "to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world" as adopted by the UN General Assembly on May 16, 2007 in UN resolution 61/266, which also established 2008 as the International Year of Languages. The idea to celebrate International Mother Language Day was the initiative of Bangladesh. In Bangladesh 21 February is the anniversary of the day when Bangladeshis fought for recognition for the Bangla language.

World Social Justice Day

Divurumpola, Sri Lanka:
Divurumpola means place of oath in Sinhala.

It is the place from Ramayana where Seeta Devi undertook ‘Agni Pariksha’
It is still considered valid in village courts or grama sabhas. The legal system permits and accepts the swearing done at this temple while settling disputes between parties.

19/02/2020

Taj Mahotsav is being celebrated successfully since 1992 in Agra in the month of February for ten days, from 18th February to 27th February. Organized by the Department of Tourism, Government of India, Taj Mahotsav is mainly dedicated to the promotion of country's rich art and craft, culture, cuisine, dance and music.

A large number of Indian and foreign tourists coming to Agra join this festivity of multi facets. The venue of the festival of Taj Mahotsav is Shilpgram, which is a stone's throw away distance from Taj Mahal. The festival starts with a procession, including bejeweled elephants and camels, drum beaters, folk artists and master craftsmen. A major highlight of this festival is the availability of fabulous works of art and craft at the most authenticated prices that are not sky rocketed by high maintenance cost.

This procession is an effort to reconstruct the ones that were taken out during the time of the Mughals. The crafts that are displayed in the festival have immense variety as over 400 legendary artisans from different parts of the country get an opportunity to showcase their talent. The crafts include woodcarvings of Saharanpur, brass and other metal ware of Moradabad, handmade carpets of Badohi, blue pottery of Khurja, Chikan work of Lucknow, silk of Varanasi, pottery from Khurja, shawls and carpets from Kashmir/Gujarat, hand printing from Farrukhabad, wood/stone carvings from Tamil Nadu, bamboo/cane work from North East India, kantha stitch from West Bengal, and paper & mash work from South India.

One of the major attractions of the Taj Mahal Mahotsav of Agra is the Food Festival, where you can get some of the oldest and the most typical delicacies from the interiors of Uttar Pradesh and rest of India like chole bhature, Indian samosa, poori sabji, gulab jamun, Lucknavi kebab, South Indian dosa, Amritsari naan, Hyderabadi biryani etc.
