Hailing from the Adivasi community of Kurachiyas in Wayanad, Kerala, India, Cheruvayal Raman is no ordinary farmer. He preserves 40 indigenous paddy seeds and incurs a loss of Rs 30,000 every year on his efforts to protect the rare seeds!

Raman is one of his kind because he is a stalwart warrior for the preservation of indigenous seeds for the last 56 years. He won the prestigious National Plant Genome Saviour Award and many renowned international, national and state awards including Kerala Biodiversity Board's Green award. He is also General Council member of the Agricultural University, Mannuthy. Raman who lives in a hut that could be 150 or so years old, knows Wayanad inside out.

Farmers communities and groups should pay attention to the noble effort of individuals like Cheruvayal Raman. Their deeds have a commitment to the mother earth and for the goodness of humanity.

“My knowledge and learning are out there for everyone, and I will always keep my doors open for those with the heart to learn,” Raman says.

Agricultural tourism is a worldwide trend which offers city dwellers a chance to escape urban concrete and re-discover their rural roots. In addition, visiting farmers, agronomists and other agricultural experts can evaluate worldwide developments in agriculture, which have been greatly influenced by modern technology.
Smart solutions for more efficient farming, hardier crops, alternative sources of nutrition, and safer food packaging and storage are essential.
No other single country – certainly not one as young and as tiny as Israel – has contributed more breakthroughs to this area than Israel.

So when you visit Israel don't forget to check their farms and learn a few new sustainable tips.

Did you know that almost all plastic is made from petroleum?

Luckily for the planet, one Dutch company named Avantium wants to change that equation and is working on technologies to make bottles from plastic made from vegetable sugars. These bottles are 100% recyclable. Avantium is also working on a Paper Bottle Project.
Good news is that beer and soft drinks could soon be sipped from “all-plant” bottles under new plans by major beverage makers like Carlsberg and Coca-Cola. They are partnering up with Avantium to make these plans become reality.

Globally around 300 million tonnes of plastic is made from fossil fuels every year, which is a major contributor to the climate crisis. The plans are to use plant sugars from sustainably sourced biowaste so that the rise of plant plastic does not affect the global food supply chain.

Would you buy beer in such a bottle?

Interesting read!
Travellers are recognizing the importance of environmental conservation and are increasingly seeking accommodation that supports environmentally friendly and sustainable tourism. Acknowledging this, hotels around the world are developing award-winning environmental, economic, and socio-cultural programs that preserve both the culture and support the local economy.

Echoing the predictions of many other well-known travel brands, Amadeus says 2020 will be the year of conscious travel.

“Sustainability has become a deciding factor for individuals purchasing travel and accommodation, and travel companies are adapting their offers to reflect this,” states the company’s prediction report. “From reducing plastic in hotels, to the creation of sustainably-focused package holidays, consumers are offered a wide choice when it comes to an eco-stay and are starting to hold companies accountable if they don’t meet requirements.”

From flights to accommodations, tours and excursions, Sri Lanka has been facing challenges in making it more environmentally-friendly. However, with several initiatives undertaken by the Sri Lanka tourism board, Sri Lanka is becoming a more eco-friendly destination. As visitors, we have our parts to play in this journey. Especially after the pandemic. Let’s be a bit more conscious to make your travel green and lessen the impact on the earth

Here are a few travel tips for your post COVID trip to Sri Lanka

Book non-stop flights: Non-stop flights require less fuel consumption and as such, the passenger would be contributing positively towards the environment

Pack light: Being close to the equator, Sri Lanka is a warm country. Pack light which can help reduce the weight of the flight, thereby reducing the fuel consumption.

Carry your own water bottle: Sri Lanka can be very humid, so you’ll need to keep yourself hydrated more often than usual.

Shop local: Sri Lanka is home to so many budding entrepreneurs that manufacture and sell local products that are mostly organic and eco-friendly.

Walk or use public transport: Try to avoid private taxis especially if you are travelling alone. Consider walking to your destination if it’s not too far.

Avoid plastic bags and straws: If you are out shopping, avoid using plastic shopping bags as much as possible.

To Make sure, you have an eco-friendly stay in Sri Lanka, you could consider the following steps: Stay in an eco-friendly villa like Villa Nikara Yala 5 and Walatta House. For every booking, they plant a tree to help fight deforestation :)
Save power by switching off the air-conditioner and enjoying the natural breeze. Open the windows and let in the natural light thereby eliminating the need for powered lights during the day.
Reuse the bed linen and towels provided whenever possible.
What do you think about these suggestions?
Please comment. We want to hear from you:)

Is this the right opportune to save our rivers?

Our rivers have started to breathe again!!! Thanks to the industrial shutdowns due to COVID 19 outbreak. Is this the right opportune to save our rivers? Yes!!

The first 4 days after the withdrawal of lockdown will be the "golden days" to rescue our beautiful rivers from polluters. Most of the river water has become clean & clear now. So when the factories reopen, it will be an easy task for pollution control authorities to identify the inlets of wastewater by tracking the difference in the colour of the water. This will be possible only for a few days after the lockdown.

Authorities could also use drone cameras to identify and pinpoint red outlets from day 1 after the repeal of the lockout. A stop memo could be issued immediately to the violator's establishment without any fail. Authorities could also seek support from different NGOs who work hand in hand with different "save river/ ocean" campaigns.

What is your take on this??
