Thiruvanchikulam Mahadeva Temple - Lord Shiva

This region was the capital of Chera dynasty ruled here till the 13th century. The ancient seaport town Muziris and Kurumba Bhagavathy temple are the first things one notices in Kodungallur. This Thiruvanchikulam Mahadeva Temple is believed to be built by Cheraman Perumal, a legendary Chera king. It has the oldest reference in history in Tamil Sangam literature

Situated near Kodungalloor in Thrissur district in Kerala is the renowned Thiruvanchikulam Temple, a Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Out of the 274 Shaivite Thiruppathies in India, this temple is the only one of its kind in Kerala. The primary deity here has long been worshipped as the family god of the Cochin Royal Family (the Perumpadapu Swaroopam after they got power following the decline of the Chera Empire). Boasting a large collection of mural art, the temple is now a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India and is visited by hundreds of devotees everyday.

The annual festival at the Sree Kurumba Bhagavathy Temple situated at Kodungalloor is famous across Kerala and is known as the Kodungalloor Bharani. It takes place during the Malayalam month of Meenam (March-April).
This year fall on 2nd & 3rd April 2022

The main event of Bharani festival is the Aswathy Kaavutheendal, held on the day prior to Bharani asterism. And on this day devotees can witness a sea of red overruns the premises as a flurry of oracles (velichappad) dancing in a trance offer their prayers to the deity. It is a mystical experience for all who have a chance to view it. The devotion of the believers as they dance along with the oracles with spiritual euphoria is a truly riveting sight.

Oracles, both men and women, dash around the temple and smite their heads with their swords, proclaiming their communion with the Mother Goddess. The devotees strike the temple rafters with sticks and hurl offerings over the roof and on to the inner quadrangle. The Bharani festival celebrates the birth of Bhadrakali (Hindu Goddess) who as per legend was born from the third eye of Lord Shiva and was the one who went to finish off the demon Darika. This is an extremely important festival, especially in Northern Kerala.

The rituals at the temple are believed to have originated from the ancient ties between Kodungalloor and Thondi; a region under Chera rule that also contained their second capital. People await these festivities with bated breaths each year.

Evening tour to Chendamangalm Synagogue from Casa De Canoli

The synagogue at Chennamangalam reflects traditional Kerala architecture and has utilized western construction technology. Some of the visual attractions of this synagogue are undoubtedly the majestic altar, which stands out for its intricate artwork. The synagogue has a high roof, which at first sight would itself convince one about the difficulties that the craftsmen might have encountered while fixing it. The ceiling of the roof has a brightly coloured chequered pattern, with huge wooden beams giving additional support to the roof.

A wooden balcony with beautifully carved balusters and railings is another attraction of this synagogue. There is another balcony, meant exclusively for women. A marvellous craftsmanship in wood, a spiral wooden staircase leads to this balcony.

Chennamangalam is also an example of religious tolerance and harmonious co-existence, which can be felt by the presence of temple, mosque and church located close to the synagogue.
