It appears to be an ancient monastery but it was built only in the last few years and it took all of four years, 130,000 stones using ancient Italian masonry techniques combined with state-of-the-art solar and geothermal heating systems.

The food here is simple, vegetarian and down-to-earth, drawing from the monastic Mediterranean tradition. Everything from their kitchen is genuinely made with high-quality ingredients from nearby villages.

With inspirations from a Moroccan riad, an Umbrian family home and a 14th-century Franciscan monastery, there are some lovely unexpected accents in this otherwise minimal design.

Pass the plunge pool, reading cave, Giardini di Silencio (Silent Garden) and a small family chapel before reaching a perfectly formed room at the end of a long, quiet corridor. Luxurious in its simplicity, it has a wrought-iron bed with soft white linen, a marble sink with home-made soap and fresh, cool air seeping in from the forested valley below. So there is no need for air-conditioning and there is underfloor heating during colder months. They have intentionally omitted modern conveniences such as phones, televisions and Wi-Fi - after all it is a space to detach from the digital realm! Instead, you can sit at your stone desk by the window overlooking lush green valleys - a great inspiration to write or paint maybe?

Tourism boards of various countries : you have so much richness in terms of stories and history, so much beauty and culture to talk about and promote and yet you resort to Bollywood sightings in your country? Really? Tsk.

It is a real pity. If tourism boards will subject themselves to such superficial storytelling how does one expect travellers to delve deeper or know better?

The area east of Africa’s southernmost tip encompasses a marine protection zone. It extends into the Indian Ocean for about 3 miles.
While you are guests of the Morukuru Family, you can simply chill on the beach or by the lodge's pool, but we suggest you also fill your day with game drives through the reserve, mountain biking, tidal walks, fynbos walks, sandboarding down towering dunes, snorkelling at low tide in rock pools where you might encounter an endangered black oystercatcher or two.
If you visit between June and October, there is no better place in the world for land-based viewing of southern right whales that migrate from Antarctica to calve. Ocean-facing suites, a dining room and an upstairs bar will give you front-row views of all the spouting, breaching and tail-flapping action through floor-to-ceiling windows.
And once the sun sets ,the stargazing is mesmerising! And it’s definitely worth getting up early to swim in a nearby sandy cove before a hearty breakfast in the courtyard too!

Beach bum or safari enthusiast? Maybe a bit of both? Well, here on the Western Cape in South Africa, it’s like being on safari with direct beach access – the very best of both worlds.
About 3 hours east of Cape Town, along the Indian Ocean coast is an off-grid, intimate five-suite beach lodge and its sister property, a four-bedroom house from the Morukuru Family.
Surrounded by coastal fynbos, the Nick Plewman-designed house, built from rough-hewn local stone and recycled railway sleepers, has the lightest possible eco-footprint. Even the underfloor heating is solar-powered. The minimalist Dutch-designed interiors blend raw timber, unpolished pale granite and natural textiles with splashes of turquoise, green and yellow.
All around there are miles of unspoilt white sand beaches and sandy alcoves with limestone walls pockmarked by the ocean, natural tidal pools protected by a reef and lovely dunes. But there is also all that gorgeous fynbos and access to the De Hoop Nature Reserve that is home to zebras, bontebok, antelopes, ostriches, baboons and protected marine life too.
A specialist guide can even take you for a walk to learn more about the diversity of marine life, and to discover how the first homo sapiens found a safe haven on this glorious stretch of coastline, 100,000 years ago!

Ayahuasca has been and is still considered a Sacred Plant Medicine by multiple Amazonian ethnic groups who have revered it and employed it as a main pillar in their medicinal, religious and fortune-telling traditions for more than 5,000 years. It is one of history’s most anciently employed Sacred Plant Medicines. And it is harmless - as long as it is adequately employed within its traditional context.
When you decide to set out on this 12 day journey with Ubuntu, you can be assured that you will be guided by only the most traditional ayahuasqueros. Along with our partners we are committed to the preservation and promotion of the cultural heritage of Peru and as such, support Ayahuasca as a means to recover the country’s ancient traditions and learn from its ancient wisdom. It is not offered as a trendy experience but rather, as one of respect and connection to this Sacred Plant and its wisdom.
You will be living in a boutique hotel right in the middle of the Peruvian Amazon in the Tambopata National Reserve in Madre De Dios. You will connect and engage with the Ese Ejja community and the flora and fauna of the Amazon. You will experience various other ceremonies like the Amazon Ikaros, a medicinal remedies workshop, painting Yine patterns on fabric, Floral Cleansing, and understand shamanism in more detail, in addition to yoga and Ayahuasca. You will have the opportunity to connect with new people while learning to live in harmony like
family.

Deep introspection and connection with the Spirit of the Jungle, Mother Earth and yourself.

To the owners of this resort, being ethical does not mean compromising on any standards. Their goal has continuously been to try and offer their guests a unique experience which minimises negative impact in the short term and has a long term positive impact on local community and the environment. This gives customers a better experience. One with soul, connecting to the land, nature and the people.
From using and operating with local materials, labour and services, naturally ventilated rooms (no AC) with fans to farm grown or locally sourced ingredients for meals. They even have a sustainability manager!
Add to this the establishment and funding of local foundations working on environmental issues like the protection of a Marine Protected Area of about 120,000ha and removing plastics from coastal areas and creating interventions to reduce the amount of plastic entering the sea from the local communities.
Just like at Ubuntu, at this private island too, it is believed that if hospitality is done right, it has the power to shape a better world and we all must try to inspire that in our guests.

Getting here might at first seem a bit - all of approximately 2.5 hrs with ferry, drive and a quick speed boat. However, there are smiling staff at all points waiting to help with luggage and guiding you to the next segment of travel and you get a window into local life when you drive past coastal villages of Bintan. But now that you’re there, what can you do?

Well, most people come to unwind. However, you could venture out onto nearby Bintan and indulge in some kitesurfing. Or on the island there is always kayaking, SUP and other water sports. And while you might not spot any of the typical grand members of the ocean, you’ll be surprised with turtles, stingrays, seahorses, cuttlefish, batfish, octopus, sweet lips and occasionally unusual species of starfish and puffer fish in the shallow, hard coral seabeds of the island. But this resort was set up for families. Ropes to swing on, natural rock slides, reefs to explore, tree houses to hide in boulders to clamber over, and even pirates treasure to search for! Walking around the whole island takes about 20 minutes so it is really safe for the kids too!

Oh and the beaches - they have the softest sand and it is said that for half the year the beach moves to the other side with the tide!

How would you like a private island experience that is of course, great fun for adults, but equally so for children too. And it’s quite easy to get to, especially if you are already in Singapore. Think beauty. Think isolation. Think perfection.
About 22 years ago a group of friends, expats in Singapore, rented a boat and set out to explore, finding raw beaches covered in shells, beautiful rock formations, colossal banyan trees, wild virgin rainforests and the most pristine reefs and mangroves on an island in Bintan. They liked it. They bought it. And today it is a family-friendly resort that is environmentally sensitive too.
This place was conceived as a place of natural beauty for those who truly connect with and appreciate it, for those who love good food and great wine. But also those who are particular about the details.

So if you’re looking for a lovely island getaway for the family and you’d like to walk barefoot in the sand [email protected]

The Qoyllur Rit’i festival gives an opportunity for the indigenous people like the Quechua to maintain their sacred traditions, which are constantly under increasing threat from globalization. All the devotion that comes with it has over time faced multiple problems from globalisation and conflicting religions to sub-zero temperatures. But nothing has managed to deter the people and the festival, entirely. However, today, they face a new challenge, an enemy even - climate change and global warming - threatening to melt this sacred landscape.
There was a time that the Ukukus would light candles on the glacier but now, in the hopes of preventing any additional ice melting, they don’t do it the way they once used to. It is also said that the Ukukus used to cut blocks of ice from the glacier to share with the community, believing that the melted water had healing powers. They have had to stop though as glaciers are decreasing in size due to climate change and warming.

“When I come here now, it makes me sad. Ten years ago, this glacier covered the whole mountain. Ten years from now, it will probably be gone.”

Amongst the Andes’ jagged peaks pilgrims in their ornate best dance with an energy so intense that it is hard to believe that the oxygen levels here are half of what you would have at sea level!! Here, for centuries, religious conflicts, subzero temperatures and globalisation have been challenged by traditions and great devotion.

In this hidden kingdom, apus or ancient mountain gods protectively embrace Peru’s indigenous communities as they walk, all in a night’s work, under the full moon. This is the Snow Star Festival or Qoyllur Rit’i blending Catholic and Andean beliefs whilst invoking celestial spirits Each year, 100,000 pilgrims from all over Peru and Bolivia, and further, hike to Mount Sinakara to take part in the largest indigenous festival on the continent.

It is one the most important celebrations in the Andean Calendar and this cultural pilgrimage has only been witnessed by a handful of intrepid travellers. You could be one of them too.

I have mentioned this before but I will again. At Ubuntu, choosing the right partners is essential. And with their solid sustainability credentials, this piece of tropical heaven in Mozambique is right up our alley.
Owner-built and owner-run, this private paradise has been built in a way so as to be non-intrusive to the local community and the natural environment. Everything here is African-sourced and community built and serviced and even powered by renewable energy, and through the reforestation of the local salt pans with indigenous mangroves from the lodge’s own nursery, carbon offsets were also achieved.

Enjoy from May to January

On the shores of one of Mozambique’s most beautiful beaches you can have yourself about 92sq.m. of private space in the midst of nature. You will be lounging around in one of the six minimal-design, well-spaced bungalows here. Each of which has been designed keeping in mind Mozambican vernacular architecture with a natural decorative makuti palm leaf canopy and mosquito nets. Large windows and apertures bring in the ever-changing colours of the outdoors. And then all the rooms have furniture and crafts created on site or collected from travels in sub-sharan Africa.

Oh did I mention the private water-front verandahs and sunken bathtubs that overlook the grounds or are perfect for star-studded night soaks too?

Best time to enjoy this is from May to January

It has become so important to take time off to just be, to relax. And yes, there are some lovely places, all over the world to do it at. Well, if you are someone who is design-savvy, planet-loving and a conscious traveler, then we have a lovely place for you. And yes, you might have a bit of a travel to get there, but sometimes, that’s what makes these places more exclusive and great to go incognito don’t you think?

You will be on the interior of a remote peninsula, on the secluded shores of a warm turquoise lagoon in Southern Mozambique where the Indian Ocean coast is reminiscent of a quieter time. It is owner-built and run by a Zimbabwean born couple. Infact, one of them would come here as a young boy, driving overland from Zimbabwe to camp on these shores with his dad.

Imagine kicking of your shoes soon as you arrive, a warm tropical breeze plays with your hair, the waves lap the shores creating a gentle rhythm, and not too far off a dhow wanders into the golden glow at the horizon…

Of course there’s always a deserted island to picnic on, or snorkeling and exploring ruins or the nearby mangroves. And if you’re with kids in tow, no, there is no kids club and the wifi is basic but we would say this is a great way for you all to truly disconnect from the gizmos and spend precious family time together in midst of nature.

Enjoy your time here from May to January

Why this journey? Why Ladakh? And why Dolkhar?
Well, through the journeys designed at Ubuntu the aim is to create change and ripples of it across various genres of our lives. Travel is a powerful tool that way.
Ladakh, of course is gorgeous, but also, it has been at the crossroads of various trade routes, conflicts, etc. Lifestyle and traditions here reflect the various influences and the long history of the place as well as the challenging circumstances the people have and continue to adapt to and live with. And their beliefs and ideals of community and sustainability permeates everything.
This journey is all about learning and sharing, about trust and connection. As you sit together, watching the stars in clear skies above, around a crackling fire, or by rippling rivers and streams, we urge you to connect with each other, the land, its people, yourself, and a path towards a future that will benefit the planet and people.

Art means different things to different people. There are varied techniques, varied styles and varied genres of art. And the muse and influences are even more so! It is all about perspective. And when we look at an experience or a place or anything at all, from a more artistic point of view, a different dialogue emerges. Don’t you think?

Climate change, sustainability and nature are very popular themes these days. And rightly so. But how does one truly connect with nature reflect on the global environmental challenges through art?

When you are in Ladakh with us, you will meet with local artists like who will share their stories of inspiration and their passion, while you delve into your own expression as well.

What is Ladakhi Cuisine? And no it isn’t thukpa and momos!
There is definitely a dearth in the proper documentation of the food of this region. In fact food can tell us a lot about a community or society - its past and present. And in Ladakh, the food reflect the difficult circumstances its people have faced too.
Over time there have even been shifts in trans-Himalayan food cultures and identities. Ergo, in order to properly understand the cuisine of Ladakh it is important to look at various ecological, topographical and climatic influences as well as inter-cultural influences.

Ladakh has been at the crossroads of trade routes, civilisations, cultural and religious events, etc and all of this has influenced the food and the biodiversity of Ladakh, creating some unique traditions.

On this journey, therefore, through various experiences and village walks, you will explore Ladakh’s practices around food preservation, traditional farming practices and the harvest of local, organic produce, use of indigenous and sometimes lost varieties of various fruits, vegetables, plants and herbs, etc. And then how all of this is translated with a modern take too.

Whenever I look at a structure - an old building, or a home, I feel a sense of nostalgia and belonging. Sometimes, I touch the walls, and imagine what all and who all might have touched them too, or walked that floor. I get lost in thoughts of what life might have been like, the culture and lifestyle of the people there, their routines and even how they must have built it all using what was available around them. And sure, structures evolve over time, influenced by various factors current at a particular time, but preservation of these structures is important as a preservation of a culture and heritage, especially with this race to modernise that we invariably become a part of!
Ancient architecture can be modernised to serve basic needs for running water and electricity. And Ladakh is a great example of this.
Here the old ways are still kept alive.Like the use mud bricks which are great for insulation, or low ceilings that help in heating. The younger generations of Ladakh have been playing a great role in the preservation of the old ways. Dolkhar too has managed to create eco-conscious luxury and their structures are made out of locally sourced materials, using local techniques of construction and by local artisans.

While you stay here you will get to know it intimately; its history, its present and how it all works towards a future. In fact you will meet and hear the stories from Rigzin Lachik herself, the founder-creator of this wonderful space. You will also understand culture, history and buildings in Leh, delve a little deeper into sustainable construction, partake in local construction workshops with experts and even make your own CSEB / Mud blocks and learn other traditional methods, while visiting remote Ladakhi villages.

To most today, Ladakh is known for its magical and mystical ambiance, religious and spiritual practices, alluring landscapes, insta-worthy lakes and of course the majestic mountains.

But let Ubuntu take you on another journey. A journey of design, one that pervades and is woven into all aspects of life in Ladakh. A journey into the ways of the past that can find their place in today’s world. Let’s understand how even in the face of modernism, cultural erosion and climate change the people of Ladakh always navigate around it and have adapted to sustain life.

When I was creating this journey I met and interacted with a few people. Cynthia, who works with the First Lady of the state of Assam, overseeing her csr- working with weavers and muga silk in Assam, a specially abled school and an orphanage amongst other government projects, and whose family’s homestay will be your home on Majuli, has been working to help various river island people with funding. One such set of people she told me about were those in the Pottery Village of Salmora on Majuli that suffers from heavy erosion due to floods and also cultural erosion due to a lack of funds and infrastructure and support from the government.
“We just live for the day and do not think further since our survival is at stake.”
Salmora has 600 families that have been making pottery for the last 500 years. Mostly it is now only small oil lamps for festivals and earthen pitchers for water or traditional rice-beer. The majority of the potters are women as the local men usually migrate to other states to earn their livelihood. The government’s measures to save Majuli have only aggravated the plight of the potters. They have prohibited the collection of clay from the riverbank to prevent erosion. So now clay has become an expensive commodity which the potters now must bring from other districts across the river. Then there is the additional and increased cost of wood, fuel and other raw material too. For most it is now all just about survival. Nothing more.

The government places geo bags along the banks, but these eventually get washed away too every monsoon.

The potters are concerned. How soon will it be until Salmora disappears entirely?

Ergo, 5% of the journey fee, per person, will be donated to flood relief measures for the Pottery Village of Salmora. We hope this will help in bringing some relief.

The people along the Brahmaputra River have learnt to live with uncertainty.

On your journey with Ubuntu you will meet a few of them.

On Majuli, you will be guests in the home of a Mising Family.
The Misings are the second largest tribe of Assam. Originally a hill tribe from Arunachal Pradesh, they moved for a better life to the Brahmaputra plains. They are now an important part of Assamese culture and society. Here, you become a part of the vibrant local traditions and culture, and instrumental in preserving a community with so much to offer while you learn resilience from the people who have learned to put their lives together over and over again… with a broad smile.

On your cruise down the river, you will even visit the ‘chars’ little disappearing islands, where people live in a unique way.
Life on the chars is unique because it seems to embrace the ephemeral nature of human existence. Here the people have a bare, transient existence, not unlike their status as citizens. And yet, you’ll see children enjoying mudslides on their bony bottoms, elders laughing off their citizenship status, and a will, albeit out of necessity, to rebuild their lives only for it to be washed away again.

As you make your way down the river, you will have get another perspective on the wildlife along its banks including the river dolphins, you will visit villages along the way and be privy to the making of silk and Mekhela Chadars, local traditions and crafts too.
