On the occasion of Goa Statehood Day, take a look at Goa's state souvenir - Diwaz/ Divaj (earthen lamp) - beautiful narrated by Apurva Sawant.
Diwaz is an earthen lamp that holds together five tiny lamps. In the olden days, 'Diwaz' was made of mud which was crafted by the potters in Goa. Today, many use 'Diwaz' made of brass. We encourage people to buy 'Diwaz' made from mud to help our potters keep this art alive. Diwaz is declared as the state souvenir of Goa.
Today we are also celebrating this day as Parashuram Jayanti. May this day of Akshaya Tritiya bring you good luck and success.

In Goa, the tiger is considered as a sacred animal. Locals believed that killing a tiger would lead to extinction of ones family. Today the Vaghro or Vaghrodev holds a special place in many temples. On festive occasions, villagers give offerings to the stone idols of the animal to show gratitude. #tiger #worship #goa #goadiaries #tigerindia #tigerindianwildlife #folk #folkmusic #zagor #forestphotography #jungle #festival #natgeo #animal #animals #animallovers #animallover #animalkingdom #animalsofinstagram #animalplanet #animalworship #dance #tribes #tribesofindia #tribe #music #folkliving #story #storytelling #folkstory

Gurguret
This timeless piece of pottery is found in every other house in Goa. Gurguret is a pot shaped like a rooster which stored cool water in the olden days. The water from the gurguret has an earthy flavor. During the summer, gurguret was kept outside every house with a glass of water for people on the roadside to quench their thirst.
"Ponk ponk!" The sound of the horn from the poder's bycicle is a wake up call to all Goans, early in the morning and after mid day siesta as they set off on their bicycles selling hot pão, unde, kankonn and poi...
Today we live in times where food and groceries are delivered at our doorstep, but in Goa, our poders have been doing this over decades.
In the last few weeks, we haven't heard the "ponk ponk" sound of the poder. Since the lockdown, our local bakeries have suspended their operations and hence the supply of bread is become scarce and these family run bakeries have been severely affected.
Some of us now have tried baking pãos and pois at home in our electric ovens. But nothing can replace the taste of the hot pão pulled out from a traditionally wood fired oven.
We can only hope that these times change for better and we soon get to see our local poders at our doorsteps.
