Snorkeling is one of the most popular water sports where one can get the pleasure of both restfulness of a vacation, with the thrill of an adventure. It's a must-do activity as it serves both swimmers and non-swimmers equally. Not many of us are aware of the diverse marine and aquatic life, the oceans support. Outnumbering the land animal and plant species, flora and fauna covers about two-thirds of the planet's surface. A peek into this incredible world of exotic creatures and plants is a mesmerizing experience.
Among the snorkeling places in India, Andamans is most popular with several islands offering snorkeling lessons and tours.
Havelock Island:
Unquestionably one of the best places for snorkeling, Havelock Island, will take your breath away with it's turquoise blue and emerald green water. It gained popularity from the Elephant Beach, where the water current is favorable enough to explore marine life, rock formations, and the wreckage of sea vessels. The Lighthouse is another snorkeling site where turtles, corals, eels, and even octopuses can be found. The best time to visit here is from December to April.
Jolly Buoy Island:
Jolly Buoy is famous for its ethereal corals and perfect ambiance, which makes snorkeling more delightful to go up close with the clownfish, anemones, blue corals, and sea cucumbers. Surrounded by dense forests and beaches, the island can be accessed via Wandoor Beach.
Red Skin Island:
Deriving its name from the abundance of red corals that make the sea surface reddish, this island is well known for its uniqueness. It is also a part of the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, where you can see endangered marine species while snorkeling. Visit the Island during the shoulder season when the visitors are scarce.
Cinque Island:
Close to the capital city of Port Blair, the uninhabited Cinque Island is a must-visit site for every snorkeler and diver. Lovely black corals, Angle fish, Batfish, Shark sightings, and getting close-up with baby sharks are special attractions here. The best time to visit is from October through February.
