Houses of Sikkim
- Vernacular Architecture style of the Community. This is Grandma Meesu's house. PC:
The house of Limbus is a symbolic representation of a feminine character and Yuma — a goddess of the Limbu community. The details of the windows and doors are embroidered with wood carvings depicting different flowers which are used by the Limbus during rituals. Some decorative embroideries done in the wood carvings of the door and windows of the house are the direct representation of gold jewelry worn by Limbu women. In a traditional house of the Limbus, the skirting of the wall is generally painted manually with red mud paint. This is also a symbolic representation of the patuka or the belt worn by the Limbu women. Source: Wiki

Chyap-Brung is the traditional musical instrument of the community. It is like a in shape but much bigger in size. During the course of group dance, male dancers hang the instrument around their necks with the help of a rope and beat the drum with an open palm on one side and a stick on the other. The younger artists have come up with some very interesting steps that are a delight to watch.

"Sikkim, we were told, was a fairy-tale kind of place. Known for its isolation, its mystical monasteries, its princesses and and Himalayan people estranged from modern life, this tiny thumbprint of a state was said to possess an air of myth and magic quite unlike anywhere else in India.

And presiding over it all, the great pretender: , the third highest mountain in the world and Sikkim’s most sacred landmark. Famed for its disappearing act (the snow-capped 8,586m peak can remain hidden by cloud for weeks at a time), this temperamental monolith has outwitted travellers for centuries. “If only we could see the range—just a glimpse—everything would be perfect,” says Indranath Chowdhury, one of the frustrated tourists in Satyajit Ray’s film Kanchanjanga

dinners are looked forward to at Mama Meesu's Basti Kitchen where the entire process—from the chicken finely on a chopping board to preparing the tomato-chilli —playes out like a grand production.

There are also variations made for the Vegetarians with and local cheese. We also dont sideline the for whom its prepped using Cabbage and Squash.

Generally P directs the proceedings, while all of us play our respective roles, chopping, mixing, folding the momos in their wraps.

The wrapping is a task where everyone shows off their skills!

The reward after this hardwork: a steaming plate of momo and a lot of happy conversations.

The left over is pan fried the next day and tastes even better in our opinion. So come be a part of this experience at soon.

There are streetside vendors in who routinely sell 6,000 momos every day, and the answer to the question, “Where are the best momos to be found?" is not easy. There are thousands of momo restaurants and vendors across the length and breadth of and India, as well as wherever in the world there is a Nepali diaspora. And they have all added their own mutations to the original, both in terms of the casing and the filling. Today, the is a thriving legacy of the traders, who brought it down from the highlands of to the streets of Kathmandu, and from there it has travelled as far as Queens in .

The first roadside momo stall, Tuladhar recalls, was seen in Kathmandu around 1942. “In our home, we made momos with three kinds of fillings—minced meat, mashed potatoes and khuwa (dried whole milk)." It was not just momos that had come down from with the traders. The , a flatbread stuffed with minced meat and deep fried, was another import, so was the , a pan-fried derivative of the momo. There was a second influx of the momo when Tibetan refugees arrived; this variety, first served in the various refugee camps, including in and in Karnataka, was less spicy than the Nepali variant, where the momo became smaller and spicier.

Although the centuries-old trans-Himalayan trade came to an end with the closure of the in Sikkim before the 1962 war, its indelibility had already become an essential part of culture. So, it was no wonder culinary habits too were passed down and turned the momo first into a home-made food, substituting the yak meat for buffalo, then into a streetside delicacy, not just in Kathmandu, but wherever Newari traders settled, including , Kalimpong and Gangtok in India. Kamal Ratna Tuladhar, author of : A Merchant Of Kathmandu In Traditional Tibet, says, “Newar merchants lived in Tibet for years at a time, and they learnt to prepare local foods, both out of interest and necessity (limited choice of ingredients). When they returned to , they taught their family members to make them." Thereon, it would be just another jump to the streets.

In the absence of roads, long caravans of traders, either on foot or on horses in the plateau, carried rice in exchange for salt in the older days, then “cotton goods...woollen goods, hardware, corals, precious stones, to***co, dried fruits, sugar, molasses and various domestic utilities such as matches, needles and soap" from India, bringing back “skins, musk and money", as well as Chinese silk and tea, thangka paintings, and gold dust. The routes were arduous, the altitude unforgiving, and attacks from bandits frequent. Most traders—from a caste group called the Urays—followed the uniquely syncretic tradition that is Newari Buddhism, and some even took Tibetan women as a second wife in Lhasa. Some of Newari literature’s most famous songs featured wives whose husbands had gone away to Tibet. One such song goes, Why, oh lord, should I eat and adorn myself? My husband has gone to Tibet.

The momo’s journey from is a story not just of the dumpling, but of the fortitude of thousands of (an ethnic group who were the original inhabitants of the Valley) traders who went back and forth between the Himalayan passes. Each journey they took from Lhasa to Kathmandu took at least 10-12 weeks (on foot initially, and then on horses), and these were regular ever since the treaty between the ruler Lakshminarasingha Malla of Kathmandu city-state and in the 17th century that permitted 32 trading houses to be established by Newar traders in Lhasa. The treaty also appointed a permanent representative to the Lhasa court, exempted all goods sold by Newar merchants from duties throughout Tibet, ensured Kathmandu’s monopoly of route on any Tibetan trade with India, and, most importantly, gave Kathmandu the sole right to mint coins for Tibet in exchange for equivalent silver and gold.

Continuing on the subject of ... the floral wealth of the have also been affected by man. Humans have been very dependent on the forests for their needs. But earlier, these needs were few, the forests were able to replenish the resources, and the delicate natural balance was maintained. But over the years, the human population increased dramatically, and with it the number of industries that depended on . Extraordinary demands were made on the forests. Forests were cut down for firewood and to feed the growing number of forest-based industries. They were also cleared to accommodate the growing population. As a result, many species of trees that were very common even 50 years ago, are now rare or have completely disappeared from certain areas. We encoached on the territory of wild animals and then they started coming into our spaces. Its something all of us need to be mindful of especially the . Soon we hope to take some positive steps ( ) to remedy the situation. PC: Unsplash

Hi there, been a while!!
Trust all of you are staying safe indoors.
We got a little busy hosting guests for the past few months .. it was all done gradually..very cautiously..but it was really nice to experience some of the pre-covid rituals.... but now the second wave is hitting us all. We are seeing many cancellations of future stays which is disheartening but we absolutely understand because our top most priority is safety. Hopefully this too shall pass and we will get a chance to see you on the other side. PC: via Unsplash

The total number of species in India is estimated to be around 1229. Out of which 523 number of orchid species is from Sikkim alone, only next to having 620 species of orchids. We encourage all guests to make it for the International Flower Festival, organised by the Tourism Department of the Government of Sikkim. It is an annual festival which is held for one complete month in May and showcases some of the most gorgeous floral varities Sikkim has to offer.
