"Ladakh is so remote and barren, people must have dusty old huts there, they must be of less means no?" Someone asked us recently.

At first offended on behalf of Ladakh, we later showed him these photos and told him all about Ladakh's prosperity and beautiful homes. ☺️

Ladakhis typically have BIG houses, enough to host 50 people comfortably. The reason being, there are no wedding/party venues, so all important events are hosted at home. 😍

The rest of the year, locals love to host guests, so these spacious, aesthetic homestays turn into cozy abodes for travelers. 🫶

The 'chansa' or living/dining area is where everyone hangs out drinking endless cups of butter/sweet tea and no Ladakhi home is complete without a 'langs' or an impressive crockery cabinet. 🧉☕

Traditional Ladakhi homes use poplar and willow beams for ceilings and mud and rock for building. Local materials ensure warmth and long term durability. The fact that they look unique and stunning is just a bonus. ✨

One of the most frequent questions about Ladakh we get is: will we get simple vegetarian food there? 🥬

The answer is a resounding YES! 😍

Ladakhis now often eat a staple of rice/chapati, dal and sabzi with an additional meat dish for meat eaters.

Ladakh supports farming of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables through the season (the most surprising was a 9kg watermelon 🍉) so most produce tourists get to consume in between May-October is locally grown.

2. Watermelons growing in the village of Saspol
3. All farm greens (broccoli, peas, bok choy, lettuce, beans) in Leh town
4. Freshly harvested potatoes, radish, carrots, onions, leafy greens
5. A meal made from all farm veggies.

This year to make things more fun, every trip has been curated according to a unique theme and interest. Go through the calendar and see what you resonate most with.

Like every year, the local seasons and festivals in Ladakh have been our north star while planning. So we're taking you to witness frozen waterfalls, apricot blossoms, lush green meadows and so much more.

Our travel season will be from March-October 2024. Don't believe anyone who tells you Ladakh's season is only July-August or you'll be missing out on so much beauty.

Lastly, please note, our trips are NOT for tourists coming to tick off places from their list. Of course we'll see places (oh so many of them), but that's not THE POINT (see slide 2).

A Ladakhi Abi (Granny) makes you chamomile tea, from flowers she gently nurtured and grew in her beloved garden.

She walks you to the green house and plucks a leaf of peppermint and makes you smell it with a proud smile on her face.

She spends afternoons sitting under the summer umbrella in the garden sipping on her butter tea and offers you some as you step out your door.

Times with Abi are anchors to a ship in a hurry to conquer new seas. Abi always has a knowing mischievous smile on her face and I wonder if she's thinking 'Slow down my child, life isn't that short either. Come, sit, have tea with me, let me tell you some stories'.

New trip announcement: Launching our next journey for Ladakh!

After a long cold winter, the Apricot Blossom season marks a colourful beginning of spring. Valleys across Ladakh get draped in pink and white flowers and its a sight to behold. Unlike the cherry blossoms of Japan, Ladakh doesn’t attract big crowds (as yet) for the apricot blossom season, making it an even more desirable experience.

People say you MUST visit Ladakh at least once in your life, we’d say at least twice: to see different avatars of it in different seasons: apricot blossom season being a natural wonder worth witnessing! In this journey, we will be exploring Sham valley and A***n valley in west Ladakh, staying with locals to immerse ourselves in their way of life, learning to cook Ladakhi food and much more, all the while sipping on delicious hot beverages.

Ladakh's unique landscapes transform every few months, as if to teach us what seasons are supposed to look like. 🙌💯

The winter season is the longest season starting in October-November (October is a transition time from fall to winter) and going all the way till March-April (April is a transition time from winter to spring)🍂❄️🌱

It might be difficult to imagine what this long winter in Ladakh might look like sitting on our couches in the city.
In the coming days, we'd love to show you as much of it as we can.🔭❤️

The common misconception is that all these 5-6 months there is snow everywhere all the time. That's not true. The surrounding mountains keep gathering snow, but in the valleys (including Leh town and Nubra) it snows only a handful (10-15) times through the entire long winter season.
People still go to offices, walk around on the streets and lead regular lives albeit with their 3-4 layers of stylish winter clothes. 😎🌟

As promised, we're launching our winter journeys in Ladakh!

If summers in this region are to be left spellbound by the stark contrast of the green poplars and barley fields against the brown barren mountains, then winters have their own extravaganza well rehearsed.

Imagine all those brown rugged studs of mountains draped in thick layers of virtuous white snow, the brave humans all wrapped in multiple layers of cozy and colourful winter wear, frozen lakes and puddles where noisy waters once flowed, wildlife unbound and enjoying their walks on the roadside just out of town....oh the list of magical sights is eternally long.

In our winter wanderings of Ladakh, we won't just be watching the winter days while being holed up in our hotel rooms, we will be playing, indulging all our senses and really making lifelong memories for our inner child to take back.

20th September 2022: Witnessed the FIRST SNOWFALL OF THE SEASON!

Yesterday was a regular sunny day, but today we woke up to a cloudy morning at Pangong.

On our way towards Changla, all of us kept wishing and buttering up the universe to make it snow. Well, IT DID and how glorious it was!

Winters sure are on their way to Ladakh. P.S: we have a BIG announcement about a winter experience soon. I'm personally super kicked about that.

The excitement on catching the first glimpse of the bright blue lake against the rugged brown background is difficult to explain in words. 💫 Imagine you've been driving for hours, the bad bumpy roads are making your organs leave their places and jump up and down internally and then when you're tired of waiting to reach Tso Moriri, this shimmering lake appears out of nowhere. 😍 Kyagar Tso (lake) is not even a real tourist hotspot, just a lake one drives by on the way to Tso Moriri, but oh what a place it is. It has all of our heart! Dearest community, With a deep breath and a full heart, we’re happy to announce the return of our beloved Travel Dirty! What a crazy time this pandemic has been and especially this past year. A quick recap to catch you up with what happened behind the curtains: All was well and growing till Covid 19 entered our lives. At Travel Dirty, we planned scarce episodes and short events between the waves and peaks, but it wasn’t a very inspiring time. In June 2021, right after we wrapped up our first ever Travel Dirty Juniors summer camp, we decided to go on a break. As wholesome and successful as that one month program was, we were left questioning about our purpose and place in the world. So we stopped. More on what happened in this long pause soon! The primary happy update right now is that Travel Dirty is ready to be back! With more consciousness, more creative ideas, and most importantly fully rejuvenated. The team will grow, our geographies will expand, and there will be so much to look forward to starting May 2022. Love, Travel Dirty 💛🦋

Summer Camp fun, all through the year now 🌈🙌 Summer is almost over and schools will start soon. We remember how the onset of monsoons, reopening of school and the dread of yet another year of studies would make us feel blue and weary.
