The Open window bus -
After spending a day in Kochi, Finally on 28th August, I started for Changanassery. While I was waiting for my friends on the Vytilla bus hub, I found it quite unusual when I saw that just like city buses in Kochi, even the state transport bus do not have glass. I did not dwell on it while traveling in the city but no window glass even for the buses that are used for travelling long distances? It was unusual enough to intrigue us into thinking. What would happen when there is rain? Or when it is too windy? Or when it is too cold? As rightly guessed by my friend, when we boarded the bus our questions got answered. There is a foldable shutter above each window which can be pulled down whenever required.
These open window buses are the perfect motif that describe my travels in the past year. By choice or without, most of the travels had been via public transport. While money can allow you to afford privacy and comfort, constraints forces you to share and adjust. During that sharing we develop new bonding and learnings. Public transport have been gateways to many of the experiences I had. More than often when you seek help, a person who even though can understand only 10% of what you say tries more than 100% to help you and that too with great patience and intent. Irrespective of what we have heard about the places through mainstream media & from people around us there is always much more. Because individual viewpoint always differs. By following the small and basic things like addressing people with respect, gratitude, good manners and showing you care goes long way in developing everlasting bonds even with strangers.
In Kerala also, I was overwhelmed by several person I met, the restaurant manager who came all the way down to show us the bus, people who hosted us, friends I made at fort Kochi, the person who gave away his seat so I can take click photos etc. many such memories I will take with me. The deeply embedded science behind the customs of Kerala such as clothing, food, house design etc. is very fascinating.
Just like the open window bus, I have learnt to travel without any filters, with an open and receiving mind, raw, soaked in the weather, moving around like a local. More than often I come back enriched with greater understanding and kindness.
