Bhutan expects close to 50% of pre-covid travel from India
Bhutan is targeting 3 lakh tourists globally. Of this, it is targeting 1.50 lakh (50 per cent) from India for 2024. Bhutanese Prime Minister has also assured government subsidy on airfares, and additional air connectivity to more cities from India. He has also said that the country will ease permit approvals. This is close to 50 per cent of pre-covid levels. Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Bhutani PM, at the FICCI India-Bhutan Summit on Tourism, “In 2024, the total number of tourists we are targetting is 3 lakh. Of this, we are targetting 50 per cent from India.“

In 2023, of the 3.04 lakh tourists that visited Bhutan, 72,659 were Indians. In 2019, 2.30 lakh were Indians of the 3.15 lakh.

The numbers, are yet to reach pre-covid levels because of the sustainable development fee (SDF) which is $15 per day i.e. ₹1,200 a day, for Indians, whereas other countries are required to pay $100 a day.

Some players said that this fee was a dampener for tourists hoping to visit the nation.

“We country is custodian of culture. 72 per cent of our country is under forest coverage which tourists love to see. The covid pandemic his us hard, and mainly hit our tourism. It is an important aspect of economic growth for us, and we are expecting better ties with India to boost tourism between the two countries.”

During the event, industry players pointed out that both countries have lesser air connectivity, and the airfares are high. One of the players also said that there was a lot of demand from Mumbai and Ahmedabad, On this, he said, “We will make sure that the government offers subsidy on airfares, and we will evaluate more connectivity to these destinations.”

Another point which was raised was that the permit process was were long. On this, the Bhutani PM said that the country will ease permit processes for Indians.

Another point mentioned was regarding Foreign Direct Investment in Bhutan by Indians. On this, he mentioned that the Lalit Group is scouting a property in Bhutan to develop a wellness resort.

Lastly, the industry demanded a common region package for India, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka, which the Bhutani PM agreed to.

Want to travel to Thailand? These flights could start soon.
India-Thailand Travel: India and Thailand agreed to expand flight connectivity to boost trade and tourism, signing a memorandum of understanding on air services in Bangkok.

“The bilateral MOU will further enhance capacities of airlines operating between the two countries, aiming at strengthening people to people and economic ties,” Indian Embassy in Bangkok said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Currently, Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet and Vistara operate flights between India and Bangkok while Air India and IndiGo operate flights to Phuket as well.

Indian carriers fly to Thailand from six cities and four Thai carriers connect twelve destinations in India. Between the two countries, there are around 75 daily flights (two-way). But now, Indian carriers will be able to expand frequencies and add new destinations in Thailand with a staggered increase in the current entitlement of 32,000 seats per week, it was reported. This will be done in two stages of 7,000 each and Thailand has agreed to open four new extra points of call or destinations for Indian carriers which include Chiang Rai, Hat Yai, Surat Thani, and Udon Thani, as per Hindu Business Line.

While Guldeep Singh Sahni, co-chairman (outbound travel), FICCI, said as per the report, “Given its proximity and reasonable prices, Thailand always sees a high travel demand. There is demand for wellness and luxury resorts too now."

This comes as Thailand announced a visa-free entry for Indians last November which runs till May 10. Nearly 1,50,000 Indians visited Thailand in February- 120 per cent higher compared to 2019, according to Tourism Authority of Thailand data.

Saudi Arabia's Ramadan rule: No permit for repeat Umrah

Saudi Arabia has announced a restriction on performing Umrah more than once during Ramadan. This move is part of efforts to avoid overcrowding during this sacred month. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah added that individuals will now be allowed to take only one Umrah pilgrimage during Ramadan to help manage the crowds at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the holiest site in Islam.

The Ministry's decision is geared towards alleviating congestion, promoting fair access to Umrah for all, and efficiently managing the crowds during peak times. To implement this measure, the Nusuk platform, a Saudi government electronic portal for Umrah procedures, will notify users with an error message if they try to request a permit for a second Umrah. The message specifies that performing the minor pilgrimage more than once during Ramadan is prohibited to ensure others have the chance to partake in it.

During Ramadan, Muslims from both within and outside Saudi Arabia flock to the Grand Mosque to perform Umrah and offer prayers. To accommodate the expected surge in visitors, Saudi authorities have implemented various measures to facilitate a smooth and comfortable experience for worshippers. Specific areas within the mosque, such as the circumambulation courtyard and ground floor, have been designated for Umrah pilgrims. Additionally, certain gates of the mosque have been assigned for the entry and exit of pilgrims to prevent overcrowding.

In recent times, Saudi Arabia has introduced several amenities for foreign Muslims wishing to perform Umrah in the country. Individuals holding different types of entry visas, including personal, visit, and tourism visas, are permitted to perform Umrah and visit Al Rawda Al Sharifa, the location of the Prophet Mohammad's tomb at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, after scheduling an e-appointment. Furthermore, the Umrah visa duration has been extended from 30 days to 90 days to accommodate a longer stay for pilgrims.

Types of visa fraud you should be aware of.
In today's interconnected world, the process of obtaining a visa is a crucial step in international travel, whether for business, tourism, or education. And in the meantime, alongside legitimate visa applications, there also exists scams, and visa frauds taking place that one should be aware of. For this, one needs to be vigilant, and understand various types of visa fraud to take action before it’s too late.
Avoiding falling into the trap of visa fraud requires vigilance, caution, and a thorough understanding of the common tactics used by fraudsters. Here are some key steps to protect yourself:

Research official requirements: Before initiating any visa application process, thoroughly research the official requirements and procedures outlined by the embassy or consulate of the country you intend to visit. Genuine visa applications typically involve specific documentation, fees, and processes that should be clearly stated on official government websites.

Use official channels: Only submit visa applications through official channels, such as embassy websites, authorized visa application centers, or reputable travel agencies. Avoid intermediaries or unauthorised agents who claim to expedite visa processing for a fee, as these could be fraudulent schemes.
Verify information: Double-check all information provided by third parties, such as travel agents or employers, regarding visa applications. Verify the authenticity of job offers, educational opportunities, or sponsorship letters to ensure they are legitimate before proceeding with the visa application process.

The red flags: Be wary of any requests for upfront payments, personal information, or documents that seem suspicious or unnecessary for the visa application process. Fraudulent schemes often involve requests for payment in exchange for guaranteed visas or promises of expedited processing, which are typically red flags.
Consult official sources: If you have doubts or concerns about the legitimacy of a visa application process, seek advice from official sources such as embassy hotlines, consular offices, or government immigration authorities. They can provide guidance and verify the authenticity of visa-related information.

Report suspected fraud: If you encounter any suspicious activity or believe you have been targeted by visa fraudsters, report it immediately to the relevant authorities. This could include local law enforcement agencies, immigration authorities, or anti-fraud hotlines provided by government agencies.
Stay informed: Stay informed about common tactics used by fraudsters to deceive individuals seeking visas. Keep up-to-date with news and alerts regarding visa scams, and share information with friends, family, and colleagues to raise awareness and prevent others from falling victim to fraud.

Exploring Char Dham – here’s the correct way to navigate the sacred trail.
The Char Dham Yatra, a pilgrimage circuit in the Indian Himalayas, is a spiritual journey of immense significance for Hindus. Comprising four holy sites—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—the Char Dham holds deep religious and cultural importance. Traditionally, it is advised to undertake the Char Dham Yatra in a clockwise direction. Consequently, the pilgrimage commences at Yamunotri, progresses towards Gangotri, continues to Kedarnath, and culminates at Badrinath.

The opening dates for the Char Dham pilgrimage sites in 2024 are as follows:
- Yamunotri: May 10
- Gangotri: May 10
- Kedarnath: May 10
- Badrinath: May 12
These dates mark the commencement of the pilgrimage season, allowing devotees to embark on their sacred journey to these revered sites.
Undertaking this pilgrimage is believed to cleanse one's soul and lead to spiritual enlightenment. However, planning the sequence of visiting these revered sites is crucial to ensure a smooth and fulfilling experience.

Yamunotri: Begin your journey at Yamunotri, the source of the sacred Yamuna River. Located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, this serene spot is accessible via trekking or pony rides from the town of Hanuman Chatti. Pilgrims typically offer prayers at the Yamunotri temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna before proceeding further.

Gangotri: After paying homage at Yamunotri, proceed to Gangotri, the origin of the holy Ganges River. Situated in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, Gangotri is reachable by road from Yamunotri. The Gangotri temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, is a significant site for worship and reflection. Devotees often take a holy dip in the icy waters of the Bhagirathi River, believed to wash away sins.

Kedarnath: Next, embark on the journey to Kedarnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, Kedarnath is accessible via a trek from Gaurikund or by helicopter services. The Kedarnath temple, nestled amidst the majestic Himalayas, exudes an aura of spirituality and devotion. Pilgrims offer prayers at this sacred site, seeking blessings for inner peace and divine grace.

Badrinath: Concluding the pilgrimage, head towards Badrinath, the abode of Lord Vishnu. Situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, Badrinath is reachable by road from Kedarnath. The Badrinath temple, nestled amidst snow-capped peaks and lush valleys, is a sight to behold. Devotees pay homage to Lord Badrinath, seeking blessings for spiritual upliftment and salvation.

Maharashtra set to become first state to purchase INR 8.16 crore land in Kashmir to build tourist bhawan.
Maharashtra is set to make history! Reportedly, Maharashtra is all set to become the first state in India to purchase land in Kashmir to construct a tourist bhawan catering to its residents. According to The Indian Express, the upcoming Maharashtra Bhawan will be set in the heart of Budgam in central Kashmir. It will also mark the first state bhawan in the valley.
As per reports, the facility will occupy 2.5 acres of land in Ichgam, close to the Srinagar airport. The Jammu and Kashmir government has granted permission for the land transfer to the Maharashtra government at a cost of INR 8.16 crore. This process of acquiring land was set in motion subsequent to a visit by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to the union territory in June of the preceding year, where he held discussions with Governor Manoj Sinha.

Before the revocation of Article 370, land acquisition in the former state was restricted solely to permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir. But, the government had the authority to lease land for durations of up to 99 years to external industries and individuals.
Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar shared plans for the construction of two Maharashtra Bhawans in Srinagar and Ayodhya in a recent budget speech. These bhawans aim at enhancing amenities for tourists and pilgrims. The state government has given INR 77 crore for the development of these bhawans.

A Revenue department note states, “Sanction is accorded to the transfer of Shamlat Deh land measuring 20 kanal situated at estate Ichgam Budgam in favour of Maharashtra state… on payment of transfer value of Rs 8.16 crore, which is Rs 40.8 lakh per kanal, for construction of Maharshtra Bhawan.”
Meanwhile, various regions in Kashmir experienced fresh snowfall, with Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg's tourist resorts receiving substantial snow overnight. Additionally, Gurez and other elevated regions in Bandipora, Ganderbal, and Anantnag districts also encountered fresh snowfall.

India, Vietnam in talks to expand bilaterals
As Vietnam gains popularity among Indian travellers, the governments of India and Vietnam are in active discussions to increase the number of flights under the bilateral air service agreement for the metro cities.

“May be this year or next year, India and Vietnam may increase the bilateral flying rights between the two countries. Both governments are discussing it. The first step is to increase slots and open skies will take time,” Nguyen Trung Hieu, General Manager, Vietnam Airlines, told Mint.

The current bilateral air service agreement between India and Vietnam permit 28 weekly departures from metro cities. Vietnam Airlines and low-cost airline VietJet have already exhausted their share by operating 14 weekly departures each.

While the connectivity from metro cities will depend on increase in bilateral flying rights, Vietnam Airlines is studying the pool of non-metro cities with international status such as Pune, Ahmedabad, Amritsar and Lucknow to connect Tier-II cities in India to Vietnam, an official said.

Vietnam Airlines launched direct flights between the two countries in June 2022 with non-stop flights between New Delhi and Ho Chi Minh City.

“Now we have three airlines between Vietnam and India. India is a huge market and demand is enough for all airlines. We are looking at other cities in Vietnam as well such as Da Nang, which is a vibrant city and many tourists from India want to see,” Hieu said.

“India is the most important market for our airline. We are investing our resources into Indian market and offer a range of options for connectivity in domestic and beyond to South Asia, Europe, US, South Korea,” Hieu said.
