Birding in Australia. Western Australia is fun for birds even in the city. Was pleasantly surprised to get 65 birds on a walk in a local lake/park and then again the next time at another lake/park.

A leopard in the Maasai Mara. Not a common sight. There are only 36 leopards in the entire park. Lucky to find this one.

Old One-eye on the MataMata road. Early on morning he made our day. An awesome sighting as he walked about a km down the riverbed and finally crossed in front of us with his buddy. Iconic lion.

Another great safari this morning. The Manas river and thick bush driving off road into the jungle. Was amazing. The mushrooms we saw were pretty massive as you can see. Wow!

I just spent 6 nights on a boat in the mangrove swamps of the Sundarbans Tiger reserve looking for tigers. Saw my first peregrine falcon. Who knew! We had a brief tiger sighting on the 3rd day. Then on the last day, before we left we spent almost 30 minutes with a real beauty. An amazing ride. I will be returning with DreadLion Safaris.

Martial eagle with a bird kill. Probably the most fearsome of the African eagles, they can take down small antelope. A magnificent predator.

Found this lady alone and looking for her pride. she walked up on top of the rocks and looked around and headed off. Obviously saw something we did not.

Sniffing was not good enough, she got all up that bush big time, then more sniffing and then marking. It is usually after a good rain, the big cats are out checking their territory markers and renewing them. Border crossing by others is not tolerated and a vigilant border watch is a key to maintaining good space for hunting.

These lions were fighting over the remnants of an impala carcass. It was almost ludicrous to watch 4 huge male lions squabbling over such a small morsel. But they were and there was no getting around it.

The big fight.

Bull elephants are always conscious of their place in the hierarchy and to improve your position you are required to fight. So the younger bulls continuously jostle for a better place in mock fights and serious fights only come when there is a female involved. This group of 3 has singled out one of them for a show down. They were so absorbed in their fight that they came literally 5 mtrs from the safri vehicle before they noticed and moved off a little. Did you know that buffaloes retire? Oh yes. Old bulls knocked out of leadership positions in the herd will often take up a solitary life, sometimes with a few others in similar straits.
