Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur, Rajasthan

ⓁⒾⓀⒺ ⓉⒽⒺ ⓅⒶⒼⒺ XplОrit - Travel Is My Home ⓉⓄ ⓀⓃⓄⓦ ⓂⓄⓇⒺ

is one of the largest forts in India.

The fort is situated 400 feet (122 m) above the city and is enclosed by imposing thick walls. Inside its boundaries there are several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards. A winding road leads to and from the city below. The imprints of cannonball hits by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate. To the left of the fort is the chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, a soldier who fell on the spot defending the Mehrangarh fort.

There are seven gates, which include Jayapol (meaning 'victory'), built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate his victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies. Fattehpol (also meaning 'victory') gate was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh to mark the defeat of the Mughals. The palm imprints upon these still attract much attention even today.

The museum in the Mehrangarh fort is one of the most well-stocked museums in Rajasthan. In one section of the fort museum there is a selection of old royal palanquins, including the elaborate domed gilt Mahadol palanquin which was won in a battle from the Governor of Gujarat in 1730. The museum exhibits the heritage of the Rathores in arms, costumes, paintings and decorated period rooms.

Mehrangarh Fort is also a favorite spot for Bollywood and Hollywood movies. Filming of the last installment of the Christopher Nolan directed Batman movie trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises(the fort can be seen in the background when Wayne escapes from the dungeon), began on 6 May 2011, at Mehrangarh Fort.

ⓁⒾⓀⒺ ⓉⒽⒺ ⓅⒶⒼⒺ XplОrit - Travel Is My Home ⓉⓄ ⓀⓃⓄⓦ ⓂⓄⓇⒺ
is tourist destination which falls along the border of the state of Tamil Nadu. The region is part of constituency of bodi Theni district in Tamil Nadu. Top Station is notable as the historic transshippment location for tea delivered up here from Munnar and Madupatty by railway and then down by ropeway to Kottagudi. This area is popular for the rare Neelakurinji flowers. The Kurinjimala Sanctuary is nearby. Top Station is the western entrance to the planned Palani Hills National Park.

Top Station derived its name from its being the uppermost located railway station on the Kundala Valley Railway, built in 1902 between Munnar, Kundalai and this hilltop location. A monorail goods carriage system was soon installed along this cart route. In 1908 the monorail was replaced by a 24 inch gauge railway. Middle Station (Kundalai) is 12 kilometers (7.5 mi) west from Top Station on the way from Lower Station Munnar. Some remains of Kundala Valley Railway can be seen at the Munnar Tea Museum.

Tea chests arriving at Top Station from the Kundalai Valley were transported by a ropeway from Top Station 5 km down hill to the south to Kottagudi, Tamil Nadu. The tea was then shipped 15 km by cart to Bodinayakkanur, then by rail to other places in India and ship to England. Remains of the ropeway station at Top Station are still visible. Elevation at top of Bodi ropeway was 1,911 meters (6,270 ft).

This is Andhra Pradesh not Himachal Pradesh.

Like page XplОrit - Travel Is My Home to know more.

Several villages in three mandals of Rangareddy in Andhra Pradesh were completely transformed on Wednesday as ice covered the entire area after a violent bout of hailstorm. It was an once-in-a-lifetime experience for people living in seven villages in Chevella, Moinabad and Shankarpally as hailstones, some as large as boulders, started falling from the sky on Tuesday night.

Unconfirmed reports suggested that about nine people had died and many had been injured in the hailstorm. There were also heavy losses to livestock as huge pieces of ice came crashing through flimsy roofs.

On Wednesday morning, the entire area resembled a valley in Kashmir in midwinter. Roads and fields were completely covered with small pieces of hail while extremely large ones, never witnessed before, were seen scattered all over.

Locals said that the hailstorm came along with violent lightning and thunder at around 8.30 pm in the evening but only lasted for around 15 minutes.

J. Veeresham, a farmer in Kummera in Chevella mandal said, “There was light rainfall and severe hailstorm and it lasted only for 15 minutes. The ice was one-foot thick everywhere.

Nothing was cleared even by morning and the ice has not melted even now. Roofs were broken, houses damaged and there was lot of damage to property.” Pandu, another villager, added, “It was night, so we were safe but if it was in the morning, we would all have been dead. All the goats are dead and there is so much loss.” Vast areas of crops were also battered with snow carpeting huge tracts of fields.

A thick fog enveloped the whole area in the morning and visibility was almost negligible. Even the trees were leafless as the hailstorm had stripped them bare.

What's the difference between hail & snow?

Experts say that snow is made up of one or more tiny ice crystals that come together to form the intricate and unique shapes of a snowflake. Whereas hail is a frozen raindrop and is generally a lot bigger than a pure crystal of ice. It is formed only during thunderstorms. Snow can also form in a thunderstorm but it depends on the surface temperature as well, say experts.

Dr K. Sitarama, director, Meteorological Centre, Hyderabad, explained, “The air temperature has to be zero, only then can snow be precipitated. It mainly depends on the processes in the cloud and temperature.“ Following a violent bout of hailstorm, sources said it took three to four people to remove each of the big hailstones off the roads in Kummera in Chevella mandal.

District collector A. Vani Prasad informed in a release that compensation would be given if there were any deaths due to the hailstorm.

Scientists said that the hailstorm that struck Chevella in Rangareddy was an extremely rare atmospheric event, one which had never been recorded in the area.

According to scientists, the hailstorm was caused by a severe thunderstorm where the clouds had risen above the height of 10 to 12 km. They said that global warming could also be a contributing factor to this extremely rare phenomenon.

Dr K. Sitarama, director, Meteorological Centre Hyderabad, said, “The hailstorm was caused by an intense thunderstorm. Such occurances are highly localised and restricted to a small area. If the Nimbus cloud, where the precipitation occurs, is at a height of more than 10 km, then the thunderstorm is severe.”

O.S.R. Bhanu Kumar, Professor of Meteorology, Andhra University, said, “The temperature in the Nimbus clouds dips to nearly -50°C to -70°C. The height of the top of the cloud is the deciding factor.” Experts said tornadoes could also be possible during this time.

Jog Falls is the second-highest plunge waterfall in India, Located near Sagara, Karnataka, these segmented falls are a major tourist attraction. They are also called Gersoppa Falls, Gersoppa Falls and Jogada Gundi.

Jog Falls is created by the Sharavathi River falling from a height of 253 m (830 ft), making it the second-highest plunge waterfall in Asia after the Nohkalikai Falls with a height of 335 m (1100 ft)in Meghalaya.

The Sharavati, flowing over a very rocky bed about 250 yards wide, here reaches a tremendous chasm, 290 m (960 ft) deep, and the water comes down in four distinct falls. The Raja Fall pours in one unbroken column sheer to the depth of 830 ft (250 m). Halfway down it is encountered by the Roarer, another fall, which precipitates itself into a vast cup and then rushes violently downwards at an angle of forty-five degrees to meet the Raja. A third fall, the Rocket, shoots downwards in a series of jets; while the fourth, the Rani, moves quietly over the mountain side in a sheet of foam. The Tourism Department has built steps from the viewpoint to the bottom of the hill where the waterfall can be seen at the opposite side. There are approximately 1400 steps built to reach the bottom of the hill.

Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary also known as Paksi Kashi of Karnataka is a Bird Sanctuary in the Mandya District of the state of Karnataka in India.

It is the largest bird sanctuary in the state, only 67 km². in area, and comprises six islets on the banks of the Kaveri river. Ranganthittu is located three kilometers away from the historic town of Srirangapatna and 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) north of Mysore.

The islets came into being when a dam across the Kaveri river was built in the 18th century. The ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali observed that the islets formed an important nesting ground for birds, and persuaded the Wodeyar kings of Mysore to declare the area a wildlife sanctuary in 1940.

Biomes

Most of the park falls under the Riparian biome, corresponding to the Indomalaya ecozone.

Flora

Riverine reed beds cover the banks of the islands, while the islands themselves are covered in broadleaf forests, with dominant species being Terminalia arjun (Arjun tree), bamboo groves, and Pandanus trees. Eucalyptus and Acacia trees have also been planted, which might lead to long-term eradication of native species. The endemic and threatened lily Iphigenia mysorensis of the family Colchicaceae grows in the sanctuary.

Fauna

The islands are host to numerous small mammals, including Bonnet Macaque, colonies of Flying Fox and common small mammals like Common Palm Civet and Indian Gray Mongoose and the monitor lizard. The Mugger Crocodile or Marsh Crocodile is a common inhabitant of the riverine reed beds.

Roughly around 170 birds have been recorded here in great numbers over the years. Of which birds like Painted Stork, Asian Openbill Stork, Common Spoonbill, Woolly-necked Stork, Black-headed Ibis, Lesser Whistling Duck, Indian S**g, Stork-billed Kingfisher and other common birds like egrets, cormorants, Oriental Darter, and herons breed here regularly. The Great Stone Plover, and River Tern also nest here. The park is home to a large flock of Streak-throated Swallows.

For visitors,

Ranger - guided boat tours of the isles are available throughout the day, and are a good way to watch birds, crocodiles, otters and bats. There is no lodging at the tiny sanctuary, so visitors typically have to stay over at Mysore or Srirangapatna. The seasons for visiting the park are: June - November (during the nesting season of the water birds). The best time to watch migratory birds is usually December but it can vary year to year.

Timings: 8.30 am to 6.00 pm. Entrance: Rs.50 for Indians, Rs. 60 for Foreigners
