Gecko Karn has been feeling quite fashionable lately. Here he can be seen sporting the traditional outdoor layer and some lumberjack attitude.

What: Plaid Flannel Button Down Shirt

Pros:Traditionally woven from wool thus durable and warm even when wet.

Cons: Gives the impression of the flannel-clad, socially-aware outdoorsman to just about enyone who's wearing it.

Where: Lahesh Cave, 3500 metres, Dhauladhar Range.

While some of our friends are getting roasted in the Indian summer heat, we are getting ready in Naggar for our next adventure. If the snow conditions permit, we would be crossing from Kullu Valley into Parvati Valley via Chandrakheni Pass! Here we are, eating pizza before we head out!

Business As Usual on Everest Must Change

Business as usual on Everest must change. For climbers, we can make this change by learning to be more self reliant. Remember, when you climb a mountain on fixed lines set by somebody else, you may conquer the mountain. But when you climb on your own power, you must surrender to the mountain.

Going through the Khumbu Icefall on Mount Everest is like playing Russian roulette, I am told. Sherpas, who make as many as 40 trips per season through this treacherous area, know the odds are stacked against them.

Ice climbing basics: Ice screw placement, anchors and V-threads [EN]

SUNDAY MORNING LEARNINGS
This one video has pretty much everything one needs to know when climbing mountains (I know that's an exaggeration, but if you only know this much, you know enough to climb with a much more experienced climber). https://vimeo.com/80485814 =408

This film demonstrates proper ice screw placement technique, as well as how to set an anchor and a v-thread in waterfall ice. We will discuss the key technical elements,…
