La Finesta Sul Fiume, near Verona in Northern Italy

A rustic B&B in an enchanting riverside setting between Lake Garda and Verona - ideal for nature lovers and romantics

There’s something bewitching about the Mincio river, which meanders languidly though the Veneto countryside, spawning legends of nymphs and sorcerers. It has held magical memories for Pietro Gandini since childhood, when his parents purchased this converted 15th-century mill on its banks, and it instantly cast a spell over us, too.

Now an intimate and restful B&B run by Pietro and his wife Mattea, La Finestra Sul Fiume sits in meadows on the edge of Valeggio sul Mincio, a small town whose castle crowns the hill behind. There are just 5 rustic rooms - 4 in an ivy-clad outbuilding at the water’s edge, another in a self-contained cottage at the top of the lawn. By day, dragonflies hover among the lilies and herons pose in the shallows; come evening, aperitifs are served under a flaming sky as frogs croak in the reeds and fireflies glow like scattered embers. If you can pull yourselves away, you can stroll into the pretty village of Borghetto, explore Lake Garda and historic Verona (both less than 30 minutes away by car), or cycle through fields of poppies. But if you find the lure of lazy days by the river too strong to resist, there are plenty of hammocks where you can lie back with a book and let the birds sing you to sleep.

Hotel Antumalal

Near Pucon, Lake District, Chile

Classic luxury, an illustrious history and panoramic views of Lake Villarica make this old-timer a still-essential visit

Sepia photos in the entrance hall look like a cool interiors montage, until you realise the portraits and landscapes are a snapshot of the hotel's own story. Visiting dignitaries share space with vistas of an erupting Volcano Villarica, whose molten lava destroyed the owners' first hotel. A smiling Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, on a fishing holiday in 1968, take centre stage. And the story of how Guillermo and Catalina Pollak, immigrants from Czechoslovakia in 1938, persuaded the president of Chile to finance their hotel gives Antumalal a place in the country's history.

The hotel is now in the hands of Rony Pollak, the founders' daughter, and the emphasis on service and luxury remains. However, it's starting to attract a younger audience with a taste for adventure. Rooms have huge picture windows; airy living areas present a stylish combination of iron furniture, colourful cushions and goat skin rugs. A cosy bar comes complete with roaring hearth and leather chairs; the dining room and terrace overlook the beautiful grounds and Lake Villarica. Glorious.

Ajia Hotel

Kanlica, Istanbul, Turkey

A historic waterside mansion transformed into a contemporary boutique hotel offering fab rooms, a terrace restaurant and cool bar

On the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, this uber cool hotel is a slick conversion of a 19th century yali – the palatial summer mansions of the Ottoman elite. The location is a little off the beaten track (a half-hour drive, north of Sultanahmet, in a green sub-urban village best known for local yoghurt), but that was, and still is, the general idea: to provide an escape from the heat and hurly-burly of the old city. And this place, all stylish modernism and crisp clean lines, has helped make out-of-town Istanbul fashionable again.

Behind an original façade (a dazzling white confection of neo-classical pillars and pediments), the interior is a geometry of dark wood and creamy marble, glass and steel, light and shade. There is a vast lobby, almost bare but for arum lilies, white orchids, off-white chairs and sunlight; there is a romantic restaurant right on the waterfront; and 16 rooms on three floors (most of which have wonder-ful views). A private boat waits to ferry you across the blue water, but, really, why go anywhere?

SK Place

Apokoronas region, Crete

Three beautiful self-catering villas sleeping 4-6, with stunning sea views, private pools, and a peaceful location near Almirida

A deep blue bay gives onto the open sea with rugged mountains rising to one side; the sun is setting and the sky is taking on dramatic hues of orange and pink. This is the view from the floor-to-ceiling glass front of your living room at SK Place.

Set on a clifftop, just outside the peaceful seaside village of Almirida, these gorgeous modern villas lie midway between Chania and Rethymno on Crete’s north coast. All Villas were designed by Pavlos, an architect, and stylishly furnished by his wife, Katerina. Each has the same ground plan but a different decorative theme, plus lots of thoughtful touches such as film libraries, mini gyms and saunas or a Turkish bath. And each has a lovely private garden with a turquoise-blue pool, fronted by that glorious sea view.

Ideal for groups of friends or a discerning family (each villa has 3 kingsize double bedrooms, 2 of which can be converted into twin rooms), SK Place is a chic and peaceful place to unwind. But should you feel restless, western Crete's sandy beaches, unspoiled villages and Venetian towns are all close by.

Grand Hotel des Bains

Locquirec, Brittany, France

A sumptuous spa hotel on Brittany’s craggy Finistere coast that combines New England designer style with utter relaxation

Some hotels have location, some have style, this has both in bucketfuls. Its position overlooking the turquoise Baie de Locquirec, in Brittany’s westerly province of Finistere, is breathtaking, and either side of the rocky point you have no fewer than 9 sandy beaches to choose from. French film-buffs might recognise the large, turn-of-last-century hotel: it was the setting for a 1970's Carry On-style film, before becoming a rather crusty spa resort.

Fifteen years ago it was taken over by the dynamic Dominique van Lier, editor of Belgian interiors magazine Eventail, who stamped the place with his impeccable New England-meets-Swedish-Gustavian style. Bedroom walls were panelled and painted in soothing moss and fern greens, floral fabrics were replaced with stylish checks, and the austere refectory transformed into an oasis of apricot and white. The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxed, both inside the hotel and its marine spa, and in its seafront gardens, which include an exquisite lime-tree alley. A great place to recharge the batteries.

THE LODGE AT CASTLE LESLIE, GLASLOUGH IRELAND

Victorian hunting lodge in the grounds of the Castle Leslie estate, with state-of-the-art equestrian centre, spa, cookery school and acres of Irish border country

When Sammy Leslie took custody of her family’s crumbling ancestral pile in 1992, she faced a conundrum: how to save the estate without selling out. The castle roof was leaking, the land was running wild, County Monaghan was a bit too close to ‘the troubles’, and there was no money in the bank. But she was determined to turn the place around without losing an ounce of its character or losing a single square inch of her legacy.

Her dream realised, the 1,000-acre estate now provides an ‘equestrian playground’, with a riding school and 21 miles of cross-country rides. The revamped Hunting Lodge - featured here - offers luxury accommodation in the original Victorian house and a newer wing, as well as a fabulous organic spa, a cathedral-like Brasserie, and a good old-fashioned Irish pub. Up in the Castle itself, you can book a cookery course in the old kitchens, or dine by candelight in its opulent hall. One of the very few Irish country houses that remain in family ownership, the place is not just a taste of the real Ireland, but a big generous dollop.

PUNTA ISLITA - NICOYA PENINSULA - COSTA RICA
An informal resort hotel, stunningly situated amid tropical gardens high above a long secluded beach on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast

Awake to the sound of the waves, monkeys calling through the trees and exotic birds whooping outside your window. Then step from your bedroom onto your private terrace and you can’t help smiling. Below you, thickly forested slopes descend to the curving shoreline and the slate-blue Pacific ocean.

Swing in your hammock and listen to the surf, and take a quick dip in the infinity pool before breakfast. Or immerse yourself in the natural sensuous pleasures of the spa and its blissful treatments. Sip mojitos and watch the sun set over the sea below. Dine by candlelight as warm breezes waft over you, or have a romantic dinner at the water’s edge. Everything at Punta Islita is designed for your comfort and to calm body and soul. The staff are as attentive as New York waiters, but with genuine Costa Rican friendliness. This is one of the country’s most exclusive resorts, but it’s entirely inclusive of the local Costa Rican community, who look after guests with tireless enthusiasm and considerable pride
