World Heritage Sites - Fatehpur Sikri
Uttar Pradesh

Sikri an extension of the upper Vindhyan ranges is situated on the bank of a large natural lake, which has now mostly dried up. It is a pre-historic site and, with abundant water, forest and raw material, it was ideal for primitive man’s habitation. Rock shelters with paintings exist on the periphery of the lake. Stone age tools have been found in this area. Ochre Coloured Pottery (c. 2nd millennium B.C.) and Painted Grey Ware (c.1200-800 B.C.) have also been discovered from here.

Sikri has been mentioned in the Mahabharata as ‘Saik’. Lexicons define ‘Saik’ as a region surrounded by water. An inscription found on the stone sculpture of Jaina Saraswati (dated 1067 Vikram Samvat = 1010 A.D.) mentions this place as ‘Sekrikya’, which seems to be a similar derivative. All this shows that Sikri was continuously inhabited since the prehistoric period.

Babur visited the place on the eve of the Khanwah battle in A.D. 1527 and mentioned it as ‘Sikri’ in his Memoirs. He founded here a garden and a Jal-Mahal surrounded by the lake-water, and a baoli (step-well) to commemorate his victory in the Khanwah battle.

Akbar (1556-1605), grandson of Babur, shifted his residence and court from Agra to Sikri, for a period of 13 years, from 1572 to 1585 to honour the Sufi Saint Sheikh Salim Chishti, who resided here (in a cavern on the ridge). Akbar revered him very much as the Saint had blessed him with a son who was named Salim in 1569. He raised lofty buildings for his use, and houses for the public. Thus grew, a great city with charming palaces and institutions. Akbar gave it the name of Fathabad and which in later days came to be known as “Fathpur Sikri”.

Here practically, all Mughal institutions such as the ‘Ibadat-Khanah’, ‘Din-i-Ilahi’, ‘Tarikh-i-Ilahi’ , Jharokha-Darshan, the doctrine of Sulh-i-Kul and policy of liberal patronage to indigenous arts and literatures, were founded. It was also here that workshops of various handicrafts were established.

Sikri was the first planned city of the Mughals. The sloping levels of the city were connected into terraces which were utilised for various complexes such as Jami masjid, Buland-Darwazah and tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti; Khass Mahal, Shahi-Bazar, Mina-Bazar, the Panch-Mahal, Khwabgah, Diwan-i-Khass, Anup-Talao, Chaupar and Diwan-i-Am. The efficient system of drainage and water-supply adopted here suggest an extremely intelligent town-planning by the Mughal emperor.

All these palaces were built of red sandstone in the trabeate beam-and-post order, and composed of pillars, ornamental arches, brackets-and-chhajjas, jharokhas, chhatris, chhaparkhats, chaukhandis and so on. Domes have been used sparingly. Sometimes corbelled pendentives have been employed in the transition phase.

The architecture of Fatehpur Sikri has a definite all-India character. It is prolific and versatile Indo-Muslim composite style, which is a fussion of the composite cultures of indigenous and foreign origins.

Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Agra, India. The fort is also known as Lal Qila, Fort Rouge and Red Fort of Agra. It is about 2.5 km northwest of its much more famous sister monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled palatial city.
Agra Fort built by Akbar in Red Sandstone when he was through with the consolidation of his power after accession to power in 1654, Agra Fort worked both as a military strategic point as well as the royal residence. Ever since Babur defeated and killed Ibrahin Lodi at Panipat in 1526, Agra played an important center of Mughal Empire it was in a ruined condition and Akbar decided to make it his capital and arrived in Agra in 1558 Akbar had it rebuilt with red sandstone. Architects laid the foundation and it was built with bricks in the inner core with sandstone on external surfaces. Some 1,444,000 builders worked on it for eight years, completing it in 1573.
At the end of his life, his son, Aurangzeb, in the fort, a punishment that might not seem so harsh, considering the luxury of the fort, imprisoned Shah Jahan. It is rumored that Shah Jahan died in Muasamman Burj, a tower with a marble balcony with an excellent view of the Taj Mahal.
The fort contains splendid palaces both in red sandstone and white marble built by two generations of prolific builders Akbar and later Jehangir and Shahjahan. Of the nearly 500 Akbari buildings built in the Bengal and Gujarati traditions only a few have survived, arrayed in a band on the riverfront.
Some of the exquisite structures that deserve a mention are:

Sheesh Mahal - Literally meaning 'Glass Palace' it was the royal dressing room adorned by tiny mirror-like glass-mosaic decorations on the walls.

The Diwan-i-Am - Which was used as a communications ground between the public and the aristocracy and once housed the Peacock Throne.

Diwan-i-Khas - A hall of private audience, it was used to welcome kings and dignitaries.

The Anguri Bagh - It houses 85 square, geometrically arranged lush gardens.

Khas Mahal - An immaculate white marble palace.

Mina Masjid - Literally meaning 'Heavenly Mosque' it is a tiny mosque closed to the public.

Nagina Masjid - Literally meaning 'Gem Mosque' it was designed exclusively for the ladies of the court.

Musamman Burj - A large, octagonal tower with a balcony facing the Taj Mahal.

Open from sunrise to sunset

Indians: INR Rs 20/-

The Jal Mahal is 4km to the north of Jaipur and is located on the main Amer-Jaipur road. Most visitors to the Jal Mahal combine the visit with the Amer fort as both attractions are on the same side of Jaipur. A typical visit to the Jal Mahal will be less than 30 minutes, enough time to take some photos. There used to be gondolas which would provide romantic boat rides across the lake but these rides stopped 3 years ago. Apart from the small market stalls and camel rides there is not much else to do at the Jal Mahal.

Amer Fort or Amber Fort is an iconic tourist attraction in Jaipur. It is reminiscent of the grandeur of a bygone era.
The charm of the Amer fort starts to build up once you drive past the Jal Mahal or Water Palace. The road winds through the beautiful valley of the Kanak Ghati leading to the Ghati gate.
Once you cross the Ghati gate you enter the narrow Amer valley with hills on either side.
The road meanders through with the gentle turns until you reach the Maota lake. It is here that you get an expansive view of the Amer valley with the majestic Amer Fort and the towering Jaigarh Fort just above.
5 reasons why I love Amber Fort, the most popular tourist attraction in Jaipur.
-Elephant ride at the Amber Fort is one of the most sought after experience.
-The pastel Ochre color looks stunning when the soft sunlight strikes the walls of
the Amer Fort.
-Amer Fort is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in India
-Sheesh Mahal is synonymous with the Amer Palace.
-Amer fort features the unique combination of the Rajput and Mughal
architectural styles.

The Jantar Mantar, once completed in 1734, were the most advanced observatory instruments with the ability to predict eclipses, track the location of stars and determine the exact orbit of the earth around the sun. The Jantar Mantar was one of five astronomical complexes built by Maharaja Jai Singh II but the Jaipur facility was the largest and is the best preserved. The centrepiece of the strange array of instruments is the Samrat Yantra (the Giant Sundial) which is the world’s tallest sundial at 27 meters and has a shadow movement speed of 6cm per minute. The whole bizarre complex has a surreal atmosphere, with giant orange structures jutting out of the ground for unknown proposes but the area is a tranquil break from the confusion of central Jaipur.

Imagine a big city right in the middle of the Jaipur! City palace is the place where one can see forts, gardens, palaces, courtyards, etc. This place depicts the striking blend of Mughal and Rajasthan architecture. It's a vast complex built by Sawai Jai Singh II and occupies at least 1/7th portion of the Pink City.

City Palace holds some of the renowned places like the Diwan-I-Khas, weaponry display at the Maharani Palace and the Baggi Khana, a museum of the Maharaja's rides. Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal incorporate amazing layouts which one shouldn't miss. The palace also houses a museum featuring a select collection of Rajasthani dresses, a fascinating armory of Mughal and Rajput weapons, swords of all shapes and sizes. This palace gives one a rich insight into the bygone era; there are various walls which are richly decorated with mirrors, murals and lattices.

HAWA MAHAL
Located at a stone throw away from the commercial center of Pink City, Hawa Mahal is considered as the landmark of Jaipur. Known as the 'Palace of winds", this five story building was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. This palace is decorated with 953 windows or 'Jharokhas' which are adorned with intricate designs. There's a small museum within the complex of Hawa Mahal, which houses famous items like miniature paintings and ceremonial armor.

The main reason behind the making of Hawa Mahal was to felicitate Rajput women who were not allowed to appear in public places. Through this fort all the women used to catch the glimpses of royal processions, hustles and bustles of the city. It is for the women's benefit that the Hawa Mahal was built, complete with small windows and screened balconies. This gave the women a sense of freedom, without appearing in public.
