My Stepwell Project had been on hold for last 3 years because of various reasons… ...I may not take the target of covering 100 stepwells each year but definitely would like to cover few every year from now on…..
These clicks come from my 2019 Chanderi visit, a paradise for a stepwell hunter…

I did my research well before reaching Chanderi and had GPS locations of most of recorded / unrecorded stepwell… young energetic 20+ yrs old auto driver was surprised to see so many of stepwells in / around Chanderi. He asked “stepwells dekhne kaun aata hai ? Aap India se nahi ho kya ? (who comes to visit stepwells ? You are not from India ?)

What leave me wondering all the time is how ancient people did such accurate measurement and calculations when there was no computer, CAD, machinery were available…

This was little away from the city, 1-1.5Kms which was “faaaar” as per city people 😊, near Kati Ghati Gate… Not sure if Kati Ghati gate used to be an entry or an exit point of Chanderi but it clearly shows that this stepwell must be used to rest before/after a long journey…

My Stepwell Project automatically gets triggered whenever I travel, for work or for leisure... so when I went Faizabad & Ayodhya for work last year, I covered few stepped kunds.
I wonder what was the reason to have so many huge (small too) kunds in the city when they have such beautiful huge river running across town... No one could answer but looks like it must be part of water harvesting and having water source closer to the habitats than people walking far up to river...
whatever the reason may be but they are big, beautiful full of water and also celebrated... Usually all the big kunds have yearly religious gathering and celebrations (mela).
