Langza, Hikkim and Comic form a small village circuit that takes you to some of the highest villages in the world.

Langza is known for two things—fossils and the giant Buddha statue that overlooks the valley as if keeping an eye on it and protecting it from evil forces.

Located on a meadow surrounded by the Himalayan mountain ranges, Langza is a lovely village. Around the colourful Buddha statue, you'll find many young children, mostly girls approached me who'll be selling you some curious looking stones which are actually fossil stones that are also known as shaligram.

These fossils in some way preserve the life from the time when these tall mountain peaks were actually a part of the sea.

Langza and many other villages of Spiti were submerged under the ancient geological Tethys Ocean, more than 200 million years ago. It inhabited many varieties of Mesozoic marine animals. It is difficult to imagine that this land could have been a huge ocean!

Around 50 million years ago, the Himalayan range and the Tibetan Plateau emerged from the collision between the tectonic plates of two supercontinents (Laurasia and Gondwana), which made the Tethys ocean disappear. Fossils of marine animals living under Tethys sea are found today in Langza and neighboring villages. Today if you take a spade and start digging anywhere around Langza, you would find a fossil or two to your amazement.

The Buddha statue is relatively new but again stands at a vantage point where only your eyes can capture the entire scene and not camera.
