Natural Wonders & Cultural Hifghlights of Georgia
22 - 29 June, 2024

The Gudauri Friendship Monument, also known as the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument or the Treaty of Georgievsk Monument, is a striking landmark located in the Gudauri ski resort area of Georgia. Situated at an altitude of 2,384 meters (7,822 feet) on the Georgian Military Highway, the monument offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Caucasus Mountains.

The monument was erected in 1983 to commemorate the bicentennial of the Treaty of Georgievsk, a historic agreement signed in 1783 between the Russian Empire and the Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti, which resulted in the kingdom becoming a protectorate of Russia. The treaty played a significant role in shaping the relationship between Russia and Georgia in the following years.
Designed by Zurab Tsereteli, a prominent Georgian-Russian artist, the monument features a large round stone structure with a colorful tiled mural depicting scenes from Georgian and Russian history, mythology, and culture. The vibrant artwork showcases the friendship and cultural ties between the two nations.

The Gudauri Friendship Monument not only serves as a symbol of the historical connection between Georgia and Russia but also as a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can reach the monument by car or hike from the nearby ski resort. The site offers a unique blend of history, art, and stunning natural scenery, making it a must-see destination for those traveling along the Georgian Military Highway.

This is just one of the many fascinating spots we will be visiting on our upcoming tour to Georgia in June.

Georgia is a country with a deep spiritual heritage, and its iconic churches and monasteries are a testament to the enduring faith of its people. These architectural wonders not only showcase the country's rich history but also offer visitors a chance to experience the tranquility and beauty of these sacred spaces.

One of the most renowned religious sites in Georgia is the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, located in the ancient city of Mtskheta. This 11th-century cathedral is a masterpiece of Georgian architecture and is considered one of the holiest places in the country. The cathedral is said to house the robe of Christ, and its intricate frescoes and carvings are a marvel to behold.

Just a short drive from Mtskheta, the Jvari Monastery stands atop a hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. This 6th-century monastery is a symbol of Georgia's early Christian history and is known for its harmonious blend of Georgian and Byzantine architectural styles. The name "Jvari" translates to "cross," as the monastery was built on the site where Saint Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia, erected a wooden cross.

Another gem is the Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site near the city of Kutaisi. Founded in the 12th century by King David IV, this monastery complex was once a center of learning and culture, housing a thriving academy and a scriptorium. The main church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is adorned with stunning mosaics and frescoes that showcase the skill and devotion of the artisans who created them.

For those seeking a more adventurous spiritual experience, the Gergeti Trinity Church in Kazbegi is a must-visit. Perched atop a hill at an elevation of 2,170 meters, this 14th-century church offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Caucasus Mountains. The hike up to the church is a pilgrimage in itself, rewarding visitors with a sense of peace and awe upon reaching the summit.

Visit Georgia's Churches with us on our upcoming "Natural Wonders & Cultural Highlights Tour," 22 - 29 June, 2024.

Meghalaya is a culinary gem waiting to be discovered by food lovers. Its diverse tribal cultures have given rise to an array of unique and flavor-packed dishes unlike anything found elsewhere in the country. Meghalaya's cuisine celebrates locally-foraged ingredients prepared with ancient traditions.

Jaddoh: A beloved Khasi delicacy, jaddoh is rice cooked in bamboo tubes over a smoky fire, infusing it with an unforgettable aroma. Meat, soya chunks or vegetables are added, creating a flavorful one-pot meal. The process results in tender, succulent rice with a unique charred taste.

Tungrymbai: Don't let the modest appearance fool you - tungrymbai packs big, bold sesame and peppery sauce flavors. This mashed fermented sesame seed dish is enriched with greens and chilies. A staple in Khasi homes, it pairs perfectly with rice or serves as a flavor-packed vegetable dip. ‘
Pumaloi: Are steamed rice cakes, usually had as an accompaniment with mains and is made by soaking red rice or other local rice varieties overnight. The drained rice is then dried, ground and steamed in small clay or steel pots. There are variations such as putharo – a soft spongy flatbread prepared from rice flour.

Shillong Chow: Shillong's very own Indo-Chinese fusion delight, this noodle dish blends Indian spices with Chinese techniques. Vegetables are stir-fried with noodles in a tangy, spicy sauce. Add chicken or pork for protein or keep it vegetarian - either way, it's deeply savory and satisfying.

Dohneiiong: A Khasi specialty that takes patience, dohneiiong is pork marinated in fiery spices then cooked underground for hours using hot stones. The result is incredibly tender, juicy pork infused with aromatic flavors from bamboo stem wrappings. Serve with rice for an authentic taste of tradition.

Join us this summer on our Pre-Monsoon Meghalaya Tour and don't forget to sample some of the above delicious dishes.

Meet Julie Kagti, Founder of Curtain Call Adventures

"My formative years were spent amidst the lush tea estates of Digboi, Assam, surrounded by the verdant Brahmaputra valley's semi-tropical splendor. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of accompanying my father on excursions across the Northeastern states, sparking an early wanderlust that instilled in me the importance of immersing oneself in diverse cultures from a tender age.

Beyond traveling, I dedicated countless hours learning the intricate art of weaving from my grandmother's deft hands. This early exposure paved the way for my entrepreneurial journey, spanning two decades as a designer, educator, and textile industry maverick.

Today, as a wife and mother of two, I feel I have come full circle, drawing upon my innate affinity for the region's culture and traditions to curate enriching, off-the-beaten-path experiences for curious travelers.

I feel that my nuanced understanding of the Northeast's soul enabling me and my team to craft not merely authentic encounters, but unforgettable, life-altering journeys.

The Northeast holds an enchanting allure, and my aim is to unlock its mysteries, one immersive adventure at a time.

Natural Wonders and Cultural Highlights of Georgia

Savouring Georgia: Food, Wine & Culture Tour
28 September - 3 October, 2024

Qvevri winemaking is an ancient Georgian tradition that dates back over 8,000 years, making it one of the oldest winemaking methods in the world. The process involves fermenting and aging wine in large, egg-shaped clay vessels called qvevri, which are buried underground up to their necks.

The qvevri are lined with beeswax and filled with crushed grapes, including stems and skins. The natural yeasts present on the grape skins initiate fermentation, and the wine is left to ferment and age for several months or even years, depending on the desired style. This traditional method produces unique, richly textured wines with complex flavors and aromas. The extended skin contact imparts deep colors and tannins, while the slow, underground aging contributes to the wine's distinct character.
The qvevri vessels used in this traditional winemaking method are handcrafted from a special type of clay found in specific regions of Georgia. The clay is carefully selected and the qvevri are formed by skilled artisans, ensuring the vessels meet the necessary requirements for proper fermentation and aging.

Aside from the unique flavors and textures that qvevri wines offer, they are also celebrated for their natural winemaking process. The lack of additives, combined with the extended skin contact and underground aging, results in wines that are rich in antioxidants and beneficial compounds.

Qvevri winemaking is deeply rooted in Georgia's culture and has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Many Georgian winemakers continue to embrace this ancient tradition, preserving a vital part of their country's heritage. Qvevri winemaking is not just a technique; it's a way of life in Georgia. Families have been passing down the tradition for generations, ensuring the preservation of this ancient art form.

Georgia is a country with ancient roots stretching back over 8000 vintages. What better time to experience its celebrated wine and food culture than during the autumn grape harvest? Our specially designed culinary tour coincides with the Rtveli harvest season, when vines throughout the country burst with ripe Rkatsiteli, Saperavi, and other native varietals.

We'll begin our journey in the capital, Tbilisi, strolling the cobblestone streets of Old Town and sampling SVGZVLI - the traditional Georgian bread baked in clay ovens. Next, we'll head east to the fertile Kakheti region, the birthplace of Georgian viticulture. Here we'll tour the tranquil vineyards and sample wines at family-run estates that still use ancient kvevri winemaking methods. At the lively "New Wine Festival", we'll honor the year's vintage alongside locals and watch traditional Rtveli celebrations.

Venturing north to Kazbegi, the soaring Caucasus Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop for a hands-on class in making khachapuri, khinkali dumplings, and other specialties of Georgian cuisine. Finally, we'll conclude our tour in the romantic hilltop town of Sighnaghi. Dubbed "Georgia's City of Love", we'll stroll charming cobblestone streets and feast on local delicacies like meat stew chashushuli and pkhali veggie spreads.

Here are some interesting facts about Georgia, one of Europe's undiscovered gems, and where we will be hosting not one, but two group tours this summer and autumn.

1. Georgia is the birthplace of wine.
Archaeological evidence shows that winemaking in Georgia dates back at least 8,000 years, making it one of the oldest wine regions. Hundreds of grape varieties are still used to produce the unique Georgian wines, and the traditional winemaking process is called Qvevri, where wines are fermented and aged in large earthenware vessels buried in the ground.

2. The Caucasus Mountains are Europe's highest.
The Caucasus range stretches across Georgia and contains Mt Elbrus which, at 5,642 meters, is the highest peak in Europe. The Caucasus' offer stunning alpine scenery and great hiking opportunities.

3. Georgia has some of the highest human settlements in Europe. Ushguli village in the Upper Svaneti region of Georgia is considered one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe at 2,200m above sea. The remote mountain villages showcase exemplary Svan towers and medieval architecture. A visit to Ushguli and villages like Mestia transports you back in time.

5. The national dish of Georgia is khachapuri, a delicious cheese-filled bread. The classic Adjaruli khachapuri is shaped like a boat and oozing with melted cheese. The dish is an absolute must-try Georgian experience.

6. The majority of Georgians adhere to Georgian Orthodox Christianity. It has been the predominant religion in Georgia since the 4th century and the Georgian Orthodox Church is a foundation of Georgian national identity. Christianity is deeply intertwined with Georgia's history and culture. Medieval monasteries and churches dot the landscape with historic frescoes and religious artifacts.

Our Story

“ I travel with the group, when possible especially on the trips I curate it and get them to share my knowledge and experience - focused mainly on culture, lifestyle, crafts, food and a bit of adventure. It isn't always posh resorts or about covering four states in 7 days. It’s loaded with interactions, aesthetics, great food from local produce and memories to carry back home. I feel my tours are more for the traveller than the tourist. ”
