PS - the blood and injuries are all moulage (essentially, fake injuries). Training with blood and realistic injuries helps to prepare for a real life scenario. Training is the most important tool we have to coach ourselves out of a freeze response when in the middle of an emergency.

Hanifl Centre is offering an exciting opportunity in Outdoor Education, combining a nature writing workshop with a short trek in the lower Himalaya. This workshop is intended for those who wish to enjoy the natural beauty of the Himalaya and would like to learn the art and craft of nature writing. The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 15, above 21 years of age. Participants should be able to walk 10 km per day at altitudes up to 3,000 mtrs.

The workshop and trek will begin in Mussoorie, with two nights and one day of acclimatization at Hanifl Centre, including room and board. The next three nights will be spent in the Nag Tibba range, camping in tents and exploring the natural history and creative inspiration of the Himalaya. A final night will be spent at Hanifl Centre upon return to Mussoorie and before departure.

Stephen Alter, the instructor is the author of Wild Himalaya: A Natural History of the Greatest Mountain Range on Earth and Becoming a Mountain: Himalayan Journeys in Search of the Sacred and the Sublime, which will be the primary texts for the workshop. He will lead three workshop sessions (2 hrs. each), two before the trek and the third after the group returns to Mussoorie. Stephen Alter will not join the trek, though experienced guides will accompany the group. Participants will be asked to keep daily journals in which they can describe their experiences on the trek and the Himalayan landscapes they encounter.

Accommodation in Mussoorie will be at the Hanifl Centre dormitory. During the trek we will be camping in tents (two persons per tent). All equipment and meals will be provided by the Hanifl Centre. Participants will each carry a daypack. Porters or mules will carry the rest of their personal items up to a weight limit of 15 kg. A complete packing list will be provided after registration.

All registered participants will receive instructions and guidelines for the workshop by email, at least one month before departure. The two required books are readily available and can be purchased online or through your local bookseller.
