Chota Kailas Cave : Located around 1.5 km from Cave No. 16 - The Kailas Temple, this Cave No. 30 is a Jain Cave. It is a part of the group of 5 Jain Caves in the Ellora Cave Complex. This is one of the most remarkable Jain Caves in Ellora.
The 5 Jain Caves at Ellora Cave Complex, belong to the 9th and 10th centuries CE. Belonging to the Digambara sect of Jainism, these Caves reveal specific dimensions of Jain philosophy and tradition.
Though not relatively large as compared to other Caves, they reflect a strict sense of asceticism and also present exceptionally detailed art works.
First in the series of Jain Caves, Cave 30 is called as Chhota Kailas. It is an unfinished and smaller version of the stupendous Hindu Kailas Temple (Cave 16). Resembling the Dravidian temple architecture, it has also has a majestic rock cut elephant, similar to the one found at Kailas Temple (Cave 16).
The temple has a mukhamandapa and a small shrine. 16 pillars support the roof just like the main Kailas Temple (Cave 16). The pillars were painted and the traces can be seen even today. The primary difference between this and the main Kailas Temple is that, the main Kailas Temple has a proper adhishthan (base) which is the chariot. This is one at the ground level.
