The Ice Stupas or the Ultimate Water Reservoirs of the Himalaya
 
We all know Ladakh, “the land of high passes” and always loved it for its scenic beauty. But only few of us might know about the extreme climate conditions and the fragile environment conditionslocal residents are exposed to and have to deal with on their own terms.

Ladakh is a cold desert and during winter, agriculture is not practiced due to frozen soil and low air temperatures. While these geographical conditions cannot be handled in winters, by the time spring season arrives water requirement for sowing increases whereas the streams of the region dry up. With annual rainfall of less than 50 millimetres (2 inches), the agriculture in Ladakh is solely dependent on snow and glacier meltwater. Due to climate change, the region experiences hotter summers with an increase in melts along with shifts in the timing and precipitation of the melts. Subsequently, during the spring season water is more scarce which in turn impacts agriculture and food supplies.

Ice Stupa is a form of glacier grafting technique that creates artificial glaciers, used for storing winter water (which otherwise would go unused) in the form of conical shaped ice heaps. During summer, when water is scarce, the Ice Stupa melts to increase water supply for crops. Ice Stupa was invented by Sonam Wangchuk in Ladakh (India) and the project is undertaken by the NGO Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh. Launched in October 2013, the test project started in January 2014 under the project name The Ice Stupa project.

On 15 November 2016, Sonam Wangchuk was awarded the Rolex Awards for Enterprise for his work on Ice Stupa. With the aim to promote artificial glaciers and save water for irrigation, Ice Stupa Competition is being held since 2019. In 2019, 12 Ice Stupas were built. In 2020 around 25 stupas are being built.

The Magnetic Hill of India. Heard of it before??

Well, all of us know that the Earth’s gravity is one of those things that stops us from flying!! Like all of us fantasize and get wooed by the idea hopping in space (zero gravity).

However, what if we tell you that there is a hill in India where, instead of rolling downwards and getting pulled by the gravitational pull, things actually go uphill?

If you haven’t heard of any such thing till now? Well then, it is time to introduce you to the wonder that is Magnetic Hill or the Cyclops Hill.
This small stretch of road, located about 30 km from Leh City, is unique because of its outright defiance of gravity.

A part of the Leh-Kargil Highway, this road attracts stationary vehicles upwards. When left with the engine off, a car can roll up at a speed of 20 km/hr on this hill. Due to this extraordinary phenomenon, it has been given many names like ‘Mystery Hill’ and ‘Gravity Hill’. Situated at a height of 14,000 feet above sea level, the Sindhu river runs on the eastern side of this hill.

For this extraordinary phenomenon, two theories are doing the round.  
First being that the region is supplied with a strong magnetic effect, to the level that it pulls the vehicle in the surroundings. The second theory believes that the hill road is actually a downhill road. Objects and cars on the hill road may appear to roll uphill in defiance of gravity when they are, in fact, rolling downhill.

In fact, so strong is this magnetic force that planes of the Indian Air Force avoid this route so that they don’t face magnetic interference on their devices!!

Have you ever pondered about "The Story of a Leaf"?

Each leaf is an individual: some are pale as paper, some dark as pitch; some rich as mahogany or chocolate, some poor thin shreds.

Each leaf has a story: from clenched grey buds bursting into bronze, opening into this year’s glorious spring and deepening into one of the best summer’s green before colouring in autumn and falling precisely here.

Each leaf is a biology diagram for the carbon cycle; photosynthesis, respiration and transpiration, terms that hardly capture the magic of turning sunlight into woodland and breathing weather.

Each leaf is a page in the tree’s journal of the nomadic travels of moths and beetles; tiny wasps injecting leaves with eggs from which they create extraordinary galls; birds from Africa come to forage, sing, give birth and go back.

Each leaf is an archive of the sunshine, rain, wind and gales that shaped them up in the canopy all year, then made them drop. Now the weather sorts them down on the ground, shuffles them as they settle, take in water, dissolve and decompose.

Well this Golden Himalayan Raspberry Hisalu is a treat to the Globetrotter. Commonly known Hisalu (bot. Rubus Ellipticus) in Uttarakhand and Aiselu (ऐसेलु) in Nepal or the locally popular yellow Himalayan Raspberry, it is an Asian species of thorny fruiting shrub in the rose family.

Native to Indian Subcontinent including the Philippines, it is a treat equally for the excursionist and nature lovers. It is asexual plant and is mainly found in the places as Nainital, Bhimtal and Mukteswar region of Uttarakhand, India.

Often found in Pine forests of the region, this Himalayan Raspberries are widely consumed by the natives and are one of the favourite fruits of the Elephants. Not just an astringent, the plant carries innumerable medicinal and herbal properties and can even heal the renal ailments too!

It was first introduced in 1961 in Hawaii as an edible fruit and an ornamental plant and still remains quite popular there. Besides listed in the IUCN Invasive Species Specialist Group, hisalu is one amongst the World's 100 worst invasive species.

The concoction of these wild berries is quite popular in the nearby borders of Nepal. And don't be surprised if you find wine made of it in the local store too!!
