“We went to Srilanka this December, and found the country to be magnificent, picturesque, historic and quite peaceful. We liked the lush landscapes, the tea plantations and the cold weather of Nuwara eliya. The birds and animals of Yala National Park and the beaches of Galle and Bentota with their dutch architecture are picture perfect.

In the month of December we experienced all the three seasons from monsoon to winter to sunshine.This was a family vacation, the youngest being 12 yrs old and the eldest member being 70 yrs old. All had a great time.

Special thanks to Meha, Rosette and team Nivalink for making our vacation memorable, The choice of hotels were luxurious and nestled in the lap of nature. The itinerary was curated in such a way that we enjoyed each day to the fullest.

Europe’s Christmas markets offer a delightful experience, transforming town squares into festive hubs filled with holiday charm. In countries like France, Germany, and Belgium, these markets feature stalls selling everything from handmade ornaments to warm mulled wine. French cities such as Strasbourg, often called the “Capital of Christmas,” or Colmar are known for their inviting atmosphere, with twinkling lights, sweet smells of seasonal treats, and the sounds of Christmas carols in the air. Visitors can wander through cobblestone streets, enjoy hot chocolate, try local delicacies, and shop for unique gifts, all set against the backdrop of historic architecture dusted in snow.

From a visitor’s point of view, the winter season offers a different experience than the busy summer months. The cooler weather brings a quieter, more relaxed feel to sightseeing, with fewer crowds to contend with. Christmas markets also offer a deeper cultural experience, with local traditions, seasonal foods, and handcrafted gifts that are unique to the season. Whether in a small village or a larger European city, the winter months provide a more peaceful and charming way to experience Europe, making it an ideal alternative to summer travel.

Fes

Fes is the heritage town of Morocco and one to arrive for its Medina (Old city), Riads (Heritage stays in and around Medina), Craft (Pottery, Leatherware etc.) and wide ranging experiences.

Medina in Fes is more intricate and extensive. So for those love to shop (especially leather), it is a haven. Evenings after Medina is shut revolves around many restaurants in and around Medina. Local Moroccan cuisine along with Mediterranean and Continental is extensively served. We headed to a nightclub on the outskirts that featured a rooftop, peppy live music and superb cuisine. Pleasant weather was a big plus to the overall experience.

Hotels in Fes are varied. There are MICE focussed hotels for the business travellers, spreadout luxury hotels for the holiday travellers and Riads for the experiential travellers.

Around Fes there are Vineyards (we did a Lunch at one of the oldest Vineyards) and Roman Ruins (Volubilis) to explore.

Fes represents an interesting addition to overall Morocco experience and therefore highly recommended as part of a complete Moroccan itinerary.

Rabat

Rabat is the administrative capital of Morocco and the most charming of all cities in Morocco. Rabat overlooks the Atlantic Ocean offering well paved roads lined with Orange trees offered a soothing landscape. The downtown felt like any other modern European city and Rabat came to all of us as a pleasant surprise with the character it offered.


Rabat Old City (Medina) was a good walk, our first glimpse of Medina, a walled old city with narrow bylanes, a standard feature of all destinations of Morocco. Kasbah de los Udayas has cafes overlooking the Atlantic ocean, excellent for selfies / photography. The boat ride overlooking Kasbah de los Udayas was a pleasant experience, so was the walking around Rabat.

Newly opened Four Seasons Rabat was a revelation. It featured Stunning Atlantic Ocean backdrop, spreadout character and amazing hospitality. The Fairmont Rabat was a superb experience too and had good views. Both Four Seasons and Fairmount at Rabat presented us with options to recommend for Celebrations and standalone getaways for luxury travellers.

Rabat combines well with Casablanca, Fes and Marrakech for a weeklong itinerary. Those looking to extend can look to Chefchaouen and Tangier on the Northern Mediterranean side as well.

Casablanca

Casablanca is the commercial capital of Morocco and one of the popular arrival points for International travellers. Casablanca is set on Atlantic ocean featuring luxury hotel around bustling downtown, Old City (Medina) and a picturesque promenade (The Corniche).

Hassan II Mosque is the most impressive monument of Casablanca, the second tallest minaret of the world. The mosque can hold total 100,000+ devotees at one time and has impressive carvings inside and outside, making it a must visit for all travellers.

Upon arrival at Casablanca, one is greeted by its genuinely warm people and treated to Khobz (Moroccan Bread) with Moroccan Tea (Mint Tea). Evening was spent at “The Cascade” a local seaside party destination. On another day we even visited “Clay Oven”, the biggest Indian restaurant in Morocco.

Stay in Hyatt regency was one down the memory lane (49 year old hotel). Lunch at the South American restaurant at Four Seasons simply experiential. We even visited luxury hotels such as Royal Mansour to understand whats on offer for luxury travellers.

Casablanca offered a glimpse of what awaited us i.e. good hotels, great road infrastructure, warm local hospitality and wide-ranging experiences. After a week when we returned to Casablanca for our return flight, we felt we just had an amazing holiday experience.

Casablanca combines well with Rabat (1.5 hour), Fes (3 hours) and Marrakech (3 hours) for a weeklong itinerary. Those looking to extend can look to Chefchaouen and Tangier on the Northern Mediterranean side as well.

Geneva - How we spent our 2 days in the Peace Capital.

Our visit to Geneva was simply unforgettable! During our stay, we visited the Alley of the Flags and the UN Palace of Nations, a symbol of the city’s international spirit. We also visited CERN for an inside look at some of the world’s most advanced scientific research.

Our walk through Geneva’s Old City offered a journey back in time, with cobblestone streets and historic buildings that told the story of the city’s past. At St. Pierre Cathedral, we marveled at the stunning architecture and panoramic views of the city from the tower.

When it comes to food, Geneva didn’t disappoint. We enjoyed traditional Swiss fondue and local wines at Edelweiss Restaurant, where live music added to the cozy atmosphere. We also had the chance to experience top-notch Japanese cuisine at the Mandarin Oriental, who were graciously hosting us during the trip.

Lyon - La Ville des Lumières

During our three-day visit to Lyon, we explored the city’s rich history and culture. We visited the stunning Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, perched on a hill offering panoramic views of the city. We also wandered through the city center, where we admired the unique fountains scattered throughout, adding charm to the vibrant streets. Lyon’s historic neighborhoods, including Vieux Lyon, gave us a glimpse into the city’s past, with its Renaissance architecture and narrow traboules ( hidden passageways).

Lyon’s culinary scene was another highlight of our trip. Known as the gastronomic capital of France, we enjoyed delicious local dishes, including the famous quenelles and hearty Lyonnaise salads. The city’s blend of traditional bouchons and modern eateries provided a perfect balance, allowing us to experience the best of both worlds. Overall, our time in Lyon was memorable, offering a perfect mix of history, culture, and exceptional food.

Lyon is an ideal destination for travelers who appreciate a mix of history, culture, and gastronomy. It’s perfect for those who enjoy exploring charming, walkable cities without the hustle and bustle of larger cities like Paris and is great for those interested in a less touristy, more authentic French experience.

A day in the Venice of the Alps🏔️🪻

Annecy is a beautiful lakeside town located at the foothills of the Rhone Alps. Its nickname “Venice of the Alps”, is due to its picturesque canals, which give it a Venice like charm with the backdrop of the surrounding mountains.

We spent our day leisurely strolling around the Vielle Ville (Old Town), stopping at cafés and bakeries for a coffee or a croissant while sitting near the Thiou River and marvelling at the beautiful pastel coloured buildings and the Pont des Amours. There’s so many boutiques, shops and art galleries in these narrow streets that you’ll be stopping at every corner to check them out.

We also took a cruise on the Lake Annecy that offered scenic views of the surrounding villages, forests painted in fall colours and the Alps. We ended our day back in the old town, enjoying street performances, sipping on wine and eating some fresh salmon- taking in the relaxing atmosphere that Annecy had to offer us.

Annecy is the perfect getaway for romantics with its quaint cafés, beautiful canals and the overall romantic atmosphere that the town possesses. However Annecy is surrounded by nature and the Alps and has many activities like cycling, hiking, boating and paragliding making it a perfect destination for family travellers and active travellers alike.

Expert tip- If you like Landscape and Street photography, you will fall in love with Annecy so brace yourself!

Fall in the Alps🏔️🍁

Close to both Geneva and Lyon, Chamonix is a ski resort town in France at the base of the famed Mont Blanc. It is usually seen as a winter destination because of the multiple ski resorts the town possesses and the snow filled winters it experiences. However- we were privileged to spend some time in early October during the autumn season which has convinced us that Chamonix and the Rhone Alps region as a whole is definitely something one can visit and cherish at any time of the year.

We got to experience fall colors along with green pine forests and snow capped peaks- giving us a taste of all the seasons. October being outside the traditional peak tourist season- there was a feeling of exclusivity and pristineness that is tough to describe in words. The weather was at pleasant as it gets, wait times anywhere were non-existent giving us the best of both worlds- the natural beauty we came for along with the quaintness and quietness of mountain towns which goes missing during the peak season.

Chamonix presents itself as the perfect destination for couples looking for a quiet vacation in the mountains as well as families looking for more active vacations- with all season activities like skiing, rafting,hiking etc.
