Bio-indicators

Frogs have definitely leaped great heights to find a special place in our life. Since they have two life stages, they make for good bio-indicators to ascertain the ecological status of the habitat.

Frogs and toads, together with salamanders and caecilians, are called amphibians. They are called so because they go through two stages in their lives and not just because they live in both water and on land. The first stage is the tadpole stage, also called larvae or pollywog, when they are fish-like and generally live in water.

Frogs with in-build Parachutes !
Really ??? Read more👇 See more 👉

For these little animals, gliding is an energy- efficient way to get quickly from one place to another. Its limbs are very long, and its fingers and toes are webbed right to the tips. Together with a fringe of skin stretching between the limbs, this flying frog can parachute to the forest floor from high in the trees where it is normally found.

When threatened or in search of prey, they will leap from a branch and splay their four webbed feet. Some flying frogs glide as far as 40 or 50 feet as they descend by stages from the treetops to vegetation lower down.

It's not from Costa-Rica 🙂
Am an Indian !🐸

It's just a few kms away from my home town, Munnar. If you got time to explore Munnar after sunset we will get surprised seeing such stunning little guys in the forest patches.

Most of these frogs are endangered and need to be given equal importance given to our Tigers & Elephants. But they are always ignored without knowing their importance and value.

Frogs have skin that is permeable, which means things can pass through it. This allows them to both breath and drink through their skin. It also means that anything in the environment is really easy for them to absorb.

Scientists often look at frog populations in order to figure out how healthy, or unhealthy an environment is.

Most of the frogs are in the verge of extinction.

Happy that, showing the aesthetic value of these tiny beings we are also creating an awareness among public to protect these tiny beings.

Thanks a million to the research fellows who introduced me into this macro world of Munnar. They are the people who made me shift my eyes from birds & mammals and taught me that these tiny beings are also playing a very important role in our food web.

Can this snake bite? Is it deadly? Read more👇

Even if this guy is venomous it's pretty hard to get bitten by a Striped coral snake, they can deliver a dangerous dose of venom with just a quick bite but as they are small snakes with small mouths, it's very rare that humans getting bitten by this snake.

So the best thing to do if u see this snake in your garden is just shoo them off or just keep away from them.
If it's inside your home call a local snake rescuer, if you are not confident enough to pick them up and leave it in the nearby vegetation.

Snakes are a natural form of pest control. So better leave them alive...

Note : Never handle unknown snakes barehand. Always keep safe distance from wild animals.
Learn their habitat and behavior before trying to photograph any wild animals.

Can we see them in 2040 ?
More Frames 👉

Destruction of forest and the heavy use of pesticides are bringing this species to the verge of extinction.
The Anaimalai flying frogs is called a flying frog because they are able to glide from tree to tree, thanks to their large webbed hands.
They can be differentiated from all south Asian Rhacophorus species because of its leaf-venation-like patterning on the green body and limbs, which may help them with background matching for camouflage. . .

Can you see the hidden beauty ?Mr.Camo Zoooom in 👉

Flower mantises are praying mantis species that display behaviors of mimicry. These insects have specific colorations and behaviors that mimic flowers in their surrounding habitats.

Most of the flower mantises are wildly ornate, others looking so convincing that unsuspecting insects come to collect nectar from them and become dinner.

Praying mantises are carnivores with a taste for live food. They can provide some helpful pest control to gardeners, as they eat potentially destructive insects like beetles, crickets, and grasshoppers.

In fact, they help us because they eat pests ! 🙂

But don't freak out: If you spot a little lizard in your house, it may actually be a good thing. Most lizards eat insects, so they can help rid your home and garden of harmful critters.

Reptile species can also have a useful anthropogenic role in ecosystems. In some areas, they help control the numbers of serious agricultural pests by consuming rodent and insect pests.

Monsoon is over but still its amazing to see these beautiful creatures in this time of the year. They are not croaking around now, but if you know their habit and habitat you can find few of them if you can spend some time to search them down.

Endemic to southern Western Ghats of southwestern India in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Found in moist forest patches as well as in wayside vegetation and tea plantations. It is not directly threatened, but the known distribution area is small.

Anuran's from the genus Raorchestes, show direct-development while allows them to be independent from a waterbody for the development of tadpoles.

"Turquoise"
Facts 🤐👇

If its sparkling eyes was not popping out of a dead dried up leaves we could have easily walked past this beauty. A critically endangered bush frog was taking a break from calling out for it's mate among the leaf litter near a busy road-side wall.

Road widening and clearing the roadside vegetation in the name of Munnar beautification is taking away the few remaining habitat of these tiny beauties. Days are not far to tag it as extinct....

Who cares...?

The green-eyed bushfrog is a Critically Endangered species because both the habitat and area in which it is found are being degraded by the extensively used tea, eucalyptus, and wattle plantations. The area where they live is also experiencing large tourism industry developments which could be a potential threat to this species.
