Kottiyoor Temple, also known as Vadakkeshwaram Temple, is a significant Shiva shrine in Kottiyoor, Kerala, India. Situated on the bank of the Vavali river, it is sometimes referred to as Ikkare Kottiyoor to distinguish it from another shrine across the river. Sri Kottiyoor temple is also known as the “Dakshina Kashi” or “Varanasi of the South” and attracts lakhs of devotees every year during the “Vaisakha Maholsavam” celebrations. The temple complex, Thruchherumana Temple, remains closed except during the 27-day Vysakha festival ( dates normally fall between May-June ) . Legend has it that the eastern bank shrine, Akkare Kottiyoor, was where Sati Devi immolated herself after Daksha Yaga. Formerly one of Kerala's wealthiest temples, Kottiyoor Perumal Temple housed valuable treasures, including gold and precious stones, stored in the 'Karimbana Gopuram'. The exact date of the Thruchherumana Temple's construction is unknown, but it has been a pilgrimage site for centuries, housing a Swayambhoo lingam.
Kottiyoor Temple, highly revered in Kerala and neighboring areas, is believed to house the divine presence of the Holy Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva) and the primordial Mother Goddess, Bhagavathy. Legend has it that Kali, representing Kali Yuga, vowed not to enter the shrine in the presence of the Trimurthy. It's one of the rare shrines dedicated to Sati Devi, where only temporary, simple structures are allowed due to religious principles. Sati is worshipped as Shakti on a raised platform called 'Ammarakkalu Thara', believed to be the origin of Shakti Peethas. Known for its ancient structure, the temple has remained unrenovated to preserve its customs and traditions.
