White is a Colour

Like most brides of Assam, I wore white on my wedding day.
The white silk weaves reflected the brilliance of the gold jewellery, the red vermilion and the radiance on my face. A colour that stands for both Life and Life after, in many cultures.
The doctor’s Coat. The Robes of a priest. The Milk in the jug. The mountain of Snow. A sprinkle of Salt. Picket fences that make a house a home. That string of Pearls. Marble busts. The pair of Doves.
White symbolises the basics of Life. The underlying hue that allows us to build and create. Symbolises purity and innocence.

There was a time when all our walls had a wash of white.
The white made the rooms light and airy, created the feel of space. While the whitewash was a functional necessity, it was more than just that.
Every embroidered wall hanging, sepia pictures of grandparents, calendars with bold dates were highlighted in all their glory.
The walls were a canvas of our homes, a gallery of creativity and expression in domesticity, while adding a sense of comfort.

Simplicity is often defined by white.
With simplicity however, comes elegance.
Trending the fashion ramps globally last year as the colour of the season, white stood out for timeless chic, combating the expected riot of colours and patterns and inspiring top designers to fire up their imagination.

It takes a bold spirit to truly embrace white.
The confident artist who revels in the colour rather than confine it.
The homemaker who coats her walls as an expression of her free spirit and confidence.
The people who wear the shade with ease and style.
The writer who elevates the power of copy with white that reveals more than the words.
Technology that embraces it as a key design element.

Truly, white is a colour of choice today.
Of new beginnings and possibilities.
That encourage us to fly.

A Big Cheer for all our Teachers!

While growing up, teachers are the biggest influence on the life of a child. The sudden reason for this nostalgia is because of Teacher’s Day! Besides, why do we need days to remember the important people in our lives? However, as long as we cherish the memories, we think all is well! So, getting back to our teachers, as children we were all afraid of some of them while we simply loved some others! However, irrespective of how we felt, one emotion that was always unanimous was our respect for all our teachers. We looked up at them and aspired to be like them.
In India, education is more on the lines of instruction rather than interaction but amidst these limits, also all of our teachers managed to form bonds with us for life. It is not the lessons from the endless books that have stayed with us but the colourful memories we have associated with learning those lessons.
Let’s be honest, most of us were not too fond of studying and it was up to our teachers to not only teach us but also to make sure that their classes were like rainbows. The classes had to be full of vivacity and contain a flavour of each of the colours ranging from fun and laughter to calmness and seriousness; so that we could grasp our lessons better. And the teachers did it with aplomb and passion.
True teaching takes place when a teacher goes beyond their duty, while trying to develop and maintain inspirational relations with their students. These teachers make it their responsibility to understand a student’s learning style, interests and background.
When we were in school, most of us probably did not realize the uphill tasks and responsibilities our teachers had to shoulder, but now as grown up professionals, we know how much toil, love and patience went into teaching us… and we cannot thank them enough.
So, today, here is a heartfelt thank you to all our teachers who have nurtured our little delicate minds and a big cheer for them for being a mentor rather than an authority figure. Happy Teacher’s Day!

How Our Colour Choices Affect Our Moods and Feelings
The colour of paint used on walls and ceilings largely affects the mood and feel in any given room. You would be more inclined to rest in a room with relaxing colours as such those on the cool side of the colour wheel; while a room with bright colours may influence you to be enthusiastic and/or energetic. Additionally, the choice of lighting is also important as it enhances the colour scheme of a room.
When deciding what colours to use on your walls, it is always advisable to think about what mood you want to create and if the space needs to feel bigger or smaller and a little more intimate. Light shades of most colours have a brightening and enlarging effect while darker shades may create the impression of a smaller room. The colour blue, for instance can be used to achieve various goals depending on the tone used. Softer shades of blue are inviting and would be great for living rooms or spaces that hold many people since they inspire liveliness, calmness and comfort. Dark shades of blue may make a room feel smaller especially if lighting is inadequate and extensive stay in such a room may cause mental fatigue, anxiety or sadness.
The question of mood mainly comes about for living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens because we tend to spend more time in these spaces and they ought to be relaxing. Since hallways are closed-in places, it is usually important to use colours that instill brightness or openness, at least for the sake of claustrophobic people. Bathrooms should not be dull either. If you want to raise the energy levels in a room you may want to go with shades of orange, or red if you want to add sparkle and elegance. Soft shades of blue, purple and green will bring a happy and relaxed mood to a room while neutral colours like black, brown, white and gray can easily blend in with brighter colours to give the same effect.
In addition to the mood you want to create, there are many other factors that influence the colour scheme that you would want to use in your home. Personal colour preferences, age, gender and mental state are some of them. Pinks and reds are thought to interest females while blues are generally preferred by males. Yellow can work for either gender and for people of various ages but the shade of yellow to be used is crucial. Softer shades are the safest.
It is equally important to ensure that the colours you pick for the walls and ceiling blend in appropriately with the furniture and floor/tiles in the room. Too many colours in one room may make it feel congested and less inviting while using one colour may make it boring. You may enlist the help of an interior designer to help match your preferences with the right colours or seek advice as you buy paint from the professionals

5 Painting Tips for Your Planned Home Make-Over
So you are planning a paint makeover but you haven’t the slightest idea where to start off from? Here are 6 simple steps to guide you.
Plan early – Many people make the mistake of not planning for their house’s paint job. You should be in a position to start choosing the color scheme and know how other housing accessories like chandeliers, curtains, furniture etc. will complement the new setting.

Clear everything – It is advisable to clear everything from the house before you start painting. If you are not in a position to, always gather everything in the middle of the rooms and cover them with a drop cloth. Make sure you wrap the cloth all around and spread a wide polythene/plastic cover above.

Take out all hardware – It may seem easier to paint above the door hinges, k***s, and handles, but unless you are a professional painter, this could end up looking like a very poor paint job in the end. Always remove all of the items and mark them (top right cabinet hinge, living room door k**b) before keeping them in a box. This provides you with an opportunity to wash them before fixing them back.

Be ready – Be armored for the fight because no matter how hard you try, there will always be paint drops on the floor and on your garments. Make sure you wear old clothes, plastic gloves, shower caps and tight slippers. Tracking the paint to other rooms and areas should be the least of your problems.

Don’t paint over bad walls – Fix any crack on your walls before you start. Competent paint companies are always staffed with professionals that would help apply textures and fill the cracks.

Once you have followed these simple steps, you are armed and ready to go. Remember to be ready to do small touch ups and do not be frustrated to be forced to repaint specific areas. Switch between your brush and your paint rollers to give you a smooth and clean finish.
