Must Visit Restaurants in Shillong

DAYO RESTAURANT, Laban

Nestled near the police station in Laban, Shillong, Dayo Restaurant offers an exceptional dining experience with its superb food quality and professional service. Inside, the ambiance is tranquil and inviting, perfect for family gatherings or a cozy meal for young couples. The highlight, however, is the outdoor balcony seating that provides a delightful al fresco dining experience.

Dayo stands out with its impressive culinary offerings, rivaling even the more renowned eateries in Shillong. Although the prices lean towards the higher side, around ₹500-700 for a couple, the overall experience is worth it. The waiting time is reasonable, but note the lack of car parking facilities. Despite this minor inconvenience, Dayo Restaurant is a must-visit for its outstanding food and serene atmosphere.

Café Cherrapunjee, Sohra

Café Cherrapunjee, formerly a 125-year-old dak bungalow, underwent a transformation into a guest house in 2012 by Mr. Alan West Kharkongor, a local resident of Sohra/Cherrapunjee. The dak bungalow was originally constructed by the British colonial administration to provide lodging for postal officials and travelers. Situated in Mawkdok, midway between Shillong and Cherrapunjee, this establishment represents a historic and strategic location.

The conversion of the dak bungalow into a guest house was spearheaded by Mr. West Kharkongor with the dual aim of supporting local entrepreneurs and generating employment opportunities for the youth of the region. Additionally, his vision was centered on fostering sustainable tourism that leaves a minimal ecological footprint.

Café Cherrapunjee operates entirely on solar energy and employs rainwater harvesting techniques. Its commitment to eco-conscious practices is further reflected in its use of environmentally friendly materials like bamboo furniture and dedication to organic farming.

The guest house comprises ten rooms, each named after a local flower. These rooms, while modest, offer comfortable accommodations complete with en-suite bathrooms. The establishment also boasts an on-site restaurant featuring traditional Khasi cuisine.

Café Cherrapunjee holds significant appeal for tourists and nature enthusiasts alike. Nestled amidst picturesque hills and forests, it provides an ideal escape. Beyond its aesthetic allure, the guest house serves as a gateway to learning about the cultural and historical richness of Meghalaya.

Visitors to Café Cherrapunjee can engage in various activities:

Unwind amidst the garden's tranquil ambience while soaking in panoramic hillside vistas.
Embark on forest walks to acquaint oneself with the indigenous wildlife.
Discover the nearby Mawkdok Falls, a stunning cascade of water.
Immerse in Khasi culture and history through a visit to the Cherrapunjee War Museum.
Partake in trekking and hiking ventures in the neighboring hills.
Café Cherrapunjee offers an idyllic haven to savor the splendor of Meghalaya, and equally serves as a platform for delving into local heritage. When planning your Meghalaya itinerary, Café Cherrapunjee undoubtedly merits inclusion.
