In our countless visits to Spiti, one mountain always held our gaze—Manirang, a majestic giant at 6593m that marks the border between Kinnaur and Spiti Valley. It had been a distant wonder, a towering presence we admired from below, until this year, when we decided to traverse it and caught our first close-up view of this formidable peak.
None of us had ever ventured to such an altitude before, and we were filled with questions.
How would our bodies respond to the thin air?
What would it feel like to stand so high, looking down on the landscapes we had only seen from below?
A deep curiosity drove us—the desire to explore uncharted paths, to walk where few had walked before, and to finally glimpse the world from atop the mountain that had long fascinated us.
Fueled by this yearning for adventure, the three of us—Mohit, Pawan, and Faris—set out to attempt the climb. Our goal was not just the summit but also to forge stronger bonds of friendship and trust, knowing our lives would rely on each other in the days ahead.
We reached 5,700m, our final camp before the summit attempt. The next morning, however, the mountain had it’s plans — thick clouds had enveloped us, snow had blanketed the ground, and our tent sagged under its weight. Facing unfamiliar conditions and an uncertain climb ahead, we made the difficult decision to turn back, vowing to return another day.
We hope to return, trusting that someday it will be kinder and grant us the privilege of standing at its peak, even if only for a fleeting moment, to experience its grandeur in all its glory.
