Gaumukh Tapovan trek is a strikingly different type of trail inside Bhagirathi river valley to high up at the base of majestic Mt. Shivling. Tapovan (4,270 m/14,270 ft) a patch of green, situated on the west bank of Gangotri glacier amidst glacial moraine and debris. This is among few known trails which takes you to a the core of the Himalayas inside a glacial valley.
The word โTapovanโ means a sacred and serene place, where the sages meditate for spiritual bliss. According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagiratha (Lord Ramaโs ancestor) of the Ikshvaku dynasty, meditated here to Shiva for Gangaโs descent to the earth. From time unknown, Hindu sadhus or spiritualists come here to pay tribute to Lord Shiva and River Ganges. Tapovan, lush green in summer, blooming with wild flowers, turns golden in post-monsoon season.

Day 1: Drive from DEHRADUN to Gangotri (~ 3100 m/10170 ft) โ 215 km โ 12 hours. Lodge accommodation.
Day 2: Gangotri active acclimatisation day, height gain on Kedartal route. Gangotri. Lodge.
Day 3: Trek to Chirbasa (~ 3580 m/11750 ft) โ 9 km โ 4/5 hours. Camp.
Day 4: Trek to Bhojbasa (~ 3780/12400 ft)โ 5 km โ 2/3 hours. Camp.
Day 5: Trek to Gaumukh (~ 4050 m/12280 ft) โ 4 Km โ to
Day 6: trek to Tapovan (~4350 m/14270 ft) โ 5 Km โ 4/5 hours. Camp
Day 6: Early morning explore Tapovan meadows, Neela Tal/around and after breakfast descent to Bhojbasa โ 6/7 hours. Camp
Day 7: Trek back to Gangotri โ 14 km โ 6/7 hours. Lodge accommodation.
Day 8: Drive to DEHRADUN โ 215 km โ 11/12 hours.
