Iceland's coastline is full of lava formations, and they’re one of my favorite things to show visitors. These rugged formations are shaped by volcanic activity over thousands of years, and each one tells its own story. Some look like craggy cliffs or strange rock arches, while others resemble frozen waves of lava reaching out toward the sea. It’s wild to think how nature keeps shaping this land, bit by bit.

The Yoda Cave, located on the southern coast of Iceland near Hjörleifshöfði, is a natural rock formation that resembles Yoda from Star Wars.

What makes this spot particularly special is how different it can look depending on the time of day. In the morning, natural light enters the cave at a lower angle, making it easier to capture clear photos without strong shadows. Around midday, the sun is higher, and the light spreads more evenly inside, allowing you to see the details of the rock formation more clearly. By late afternoon or early evening, the angle of the sunlight shifts, casting longer shadows and giving the cave a more dramatic appearance, especially when the rocks reflect the warmer hues of the setting sun.

Cairns, or "vörður" in Icelandic, are traditional stone stacks that have been used for centuries as markers along trails. Historically, they guided travelers through Iceland’s rugged landscapes, especially in areas where weather or terrain made navigation difficult. While modern roads and GPS have taken over, you’ll still see these cairns on hiking paths or in remote areas. Remember, it's important not to disturb them, as they still play a role in marking trails for hikers today.
