Sailing is a part of all of our summer tours as boat transfer is the best way to get around in East Greenland. On bright days like this one it is also by far the most scenic way of travel. Just look at these incredible Iceberg formations! 😍

Climbing the Qeqqit Qaqqartivaat, the mountain above Kuummiit village, is rewarded with views of mountain peaks that stretch as far as the eye can reach.

The end of the treeline marks the start of the Arctic climate - where trees can't grow to be tall. In East Greenland there are no trees, only the stunning Arctic wilderness characterized by low-lying vegetation, such as shrubs, grasses, mosses, and lichens. 🌱

Our summer tours are in full swing, and we’ve been exploring the Arctic wilderness with our clients! Living just below the Arctic Circle means sunny days are rare, so we really appreciate them when they come. We make sure to take breaks to admire the stunning views, and especially the mountain tops in the sunlight. 🌞

June 20th, marked the longest day of the year in Greenland, the day of summer solstice. 🌅

In East Greenland the magic of the midsummer can be clearly felt in the air. The sun sets around 1 am, making way for slow sunsets that stretch on into the night.

In the stunning East Greenland area, the ocean ice never completely melts, even during summer. Though the ice cover decreases significantly, you'll still find majestic sea ice and icebergs drifting along the coast. 🧊 This create a breathtaking contrast with the open water, offering a glimpse into the enduring beauty of the Arctic.

Explorers in the making! 🐾 These adorable Greenlandic sled-dog puppies are gearing up for their summer adventures in the Arctic.

Sled-dogs are only allowed in East Greenland and the northen most part of West Greenland, and in East Greenland sled-dogs are an important part of the local culture.

The bond shared between these devoted animals and the Inuit people revolves around mutual respect and survival. The dogs serve as means of transportation across the frozen landscapes, while humans guarantee their welfare and nourishment.

Join our summer tours and experience the Midnight Sun of the Arctic! During summer time the everlasting daylight means that the sun will often still be up at midnight. At summer solstice the sunset is around 1 am but it's bright all night long.

Stills from a Video of Einar’s very first Crossing of the Greenland Ice Cap in 1997. On this Expedition Einar was a guide to a French/Italian couple, Franco and Sabine. They became good friends with Einar and have remained so ever since. Great adventures often create great friendships!

Meet Kristinn
Kristinn, one of the two founders of Arctic Hiking and Expeditions, loves to travel and spend his time outdoors. Kristinn grew up in the Westman Islands where the beautiful nature with turbulent seas and abundant birdlife shaped him greatly. He loves hiking, cycling, skiing and fishing while experiencing nature first hand.

Backstory:
Kristinn is a Geographer and his main interests lay in Historical Geography and Cartography. For the most part of his career Kristinn worked for Iceland‘s largest news outlet “mbl.is”.
Recently Kristinn decided to shift direction and decided to enroll in the Guide School of Iceland. Since his interests lie mainly in the outdoors, why not share the enthusiasm of Icelandic nature with others? Kristinn graduated in 2019 at the top of his class and in 2020 he founded Arctic Hiking and Expeditions with his lifelong friend Einar.

Kristinn has now been guiding for 4 years. With a friendliness that makes one feel welcome and humor as natural as the landscapes he loves, Kristinn turns hikes into down-to-earth adventures.

Winter skiing adventures in Kulusuk - April 2024

Kulusuk is a small hunter’s village in East Greenland. In winter the snow rules over all which makes the area a perfect terrain for cross-country skiing. As the ocean is also still completely frozen this time of year it becomes possible to follow the dogsled trails of the local hunters, and ski on the ocean ice amongst the mountains and giant icebergs stuck in the winter ice. 🗻🧊

This tour offers you the best of both worlds in terms of comfort and adventure. Staying in our warm house in Kulusuk and traveling day-distances from there. 🕯

Meet Einar!

Einar is one of the two founders of Arctic Hiking. He is a great nature lover and an outdoor person who developed a passion for long walks and mountaineering as a teenager. Einar is a skilled guide with almost 40 years of experience. He is both a calm and humoristic person and has a great eye for nature!

Back story:
As a teenager Einar joined the Alpine Club in Reykjavík, then later the FBS-R Mountain Rescue Group and at 19 he started leading hiking and cross-country tours for the local touring club. Einar learned French while studying Geography in Paris and then started guiding French groups in Iceland. In 1994 he co-founded Icelandic Mountain Guides (IMG), where he worked for 26 years. In 2020 he left IMG and founded Arctic Hiking and Expedition which leads us to today!

Through out the years Einar has been on various expeditions, taken a hand-full of wilderness & mountaineering courses, and guided so many tours that he has lost track of the number a long time ago.

For those of you who have visited Iceland, perhaps you see some similarities regarding the scenery. While the warmer months reveal some plant life and some views that may remind you of its neighbor, the two have some key differences. For example, where Iceland is famous for its volcanic activity, Greenland has no volcanos. Greenland also has an astounding 80% ice sheet cover, whereas Iceland only has 11%.
