A new lava fissure has opened several hundred meters to the side of the eruption in Geldingadalir, resulting in a stream of lava flowing into another valley, Meradalir. In the distance are the city lights in Reykjavik.

Fyrstu drónamyndirnar af eldgosinu í Fagradalsfjalli eru byrjaðar að berast og mbl.is sýnir hér myndir sem Sigurður Þór Helgason tók við krefjandi aðstæður yfir gosinu í nótt og þær eru í einu orði sagt stórbrotnar.

Eruption started in Reykjanes peninsula.
Few minutes ago around 22.00 / 10 p.m. tonight an eruption started in Reykjanes peninsula, close to the mountain Fagradalsfjall. It's been expected now for a couple of weeks as we have had thousands of earthquakes up to 5,2. The nature is very unpredictable as the last 24 hours the earthquakes had slowed down and in the evening news a geologist said that the likelihood for an eruption had diminished a lot and most likely there would not be an eruption in spite of all the earthquakes. Still 2 hours later we had one :)
The eruption is not far from the town Grindavik and the Blue lagoon and tomorrow when it is daylight again scientists can estimate the size of it and how likely it will be that the eruption will threaten the town, the Blue lagoon or the geothermal power plant in Svarsengi.
The photo was from the extra evening news in RUV national television.

The Icelandic sheep kept the people alive for many centuries. The wool kept them warm during the cold winters and almost everything from the sheep was eaten. Even the rams testicles were eaten and still are as a delicatesse in the period we call “Þorri”. In the centuries before 1900 very little food was imported so sheep meat and fish were the main source of food for Icelanders.

Icelandic turf houses.
Before the twentieth century, the majority of the Icelandic people lived in turf houses. The Skogar museum has one of very few preserved turf houses we still have in Iceland. Due to lack of building materials like wood in the old ages, Icelanders needed other building materials and used turf to build the houses.

Approximately every four years there is an eruption in Iceland and some of them are friendly tourist attractions like when the eruption started in Eyjafjallajökull in 2010. In the beginning of the eruption there were jeeps and snowmobiles on the glacier to watch the eruption. We could even go so close that we could feel the heat from the spouting lava. These photos were taken on March 25th. 2010 at 8-9 p.m.

The Icelandic horse not only has a good sense of humor, he also has an extra gait, called tölt. He is very strong built and gets furry during the winter to withstand the cold and the harsh weather.
He has a good temper and is good to ride.

Krýsuvíkurberg is one of the biggest bird cliffs in Iceland, stretching 8 km (5 miles) and up to 60 meter high (200 feet). The cliffs are home to up to 60000 pairs of seabirds, with the biggest population Kittiwake, then Common Guillemot and Razorbill. In the picture the lava lines are very clear and good example how Iceland was built up layer by layer of lava for the last 16 million years and still going strong :)

Bóndadagur

The first day of “Þorri”, which according to the old Norse calendar started on Friday in the 13th. week of winter, is called “Bóndadagur” and can be translated as “husbands day”.

In these 4 weeks in Þorri, Icelander´s celebrate the old times. In every town are festivals were the food is prepared like in the old days, with smoked, salted, soured, dried fish and meat. Of course the local schnapps is not far away and a local beer made specially for this occasion.
