THE FARMLIFE OF RAUÐASANDUR
There are three farms in the area, Melanes to the east and Stakkar & Lambavatn at the other end to the west. All these farms have sheep that can be seen running around outside during the summer, enjoying life. Please note that they cannot (and should not) be approached, they are easily spooked and can get separated from their lambs. They also very much like their privacy 🙂

We offer 3 small sleeping huts and each one has two single beds. The huts share facilities with the campsite.

The huts can be booked on www.airbnb.com

WELCOME TO THE MELANES CAMPSITE
The campite is located by the beautiful beach of Rauðasandur with a great view of Látrabjarg birdcliffs. The campsite is open from May 15th until September 15th (last evening to stay is September 14th).

Our facilities include: kitchen, bathrooms and showers.

Harbor seal colony

On the beach is a Harbor seal colony with up to 200 seals. When the tide is low, the seals lay on the sand and are easy to watch.

The french coffee house at kirkjuhvammur
Hiking

All around are beautiful hiking trails for all types of hikers, ranging from easy to very difficult. From an easy walk such as hiking to the ruins of an old farm, Sjöundá, just a 15 min walk from the campsite. To the difficult hike to the lighthouse in Skor with steep slopes and elevation, which takes about 90 min one way.

The coffee house is located in the middle of Rauðasandur, close to the church. It is open during the summer and serves the most delicious french chocolate cake. They also have an impressive collection of sand from all over Iceland and even from various places in the world. We highly recommend that you sit down for a cup of coffee and enjoy the view of both Látrabjarg bird cliffs and Snæfellsjökull glacier.

Activities in Breidavik
The main reason why people stay in Breidavik hotel is the Latrabjarg bird-cliff. You can watch and take pictures of the Puffins very close, sometimes you can even touch them. You have to be very careful, because there is always a chance of falling down.

Látrabjarg bird-cliff is the largest seabird cliff in Iceland and one of Europe’s biggest seabird cliffs. Látrabjarg is also one of the westernmost parts of Europe (24°32’´3″ west). The Bjargtangar part of Látrabjarg is often called the westernmost point if you skip the mid-Atlantic archipelago of Azores. Látrabjarg is over 440 meters high and 14 km long.

Nearby the hotel area there is a wide golden sand beach, a length of more than 5 km. Dunes and sand, winding streams and a number of birds is also impressive, so we highly recommend a few hours walk on the beach.

We have good news for a fishing enthusiasts. In the hotel area is a lake where you can fish. There are a lot of fish, you just need to catch it.

Breidavik and Latrabjarg is amazing areas for hikers.

Breiðavík is situated on the way to Látrabjarg. When you drive over the mountain pass from Örlygshöfn you will come down in the creek of Breiðavík. In the creek there is a church and the Hótel Breiðavík. Activities in Breidavik The main reason why people stay in Breidavik hotel is the Latr...

In Efstidalur you will get a unique and different experience. Right in the middle of the Golden Circle, you get a glance of the farm life in Iceland. This family farm has opened up for tourists and offers a variety of products straight from the farm, such as the famous ice cream, skyr and feta cheese. The restaurant also offers beef from the farm and other local food.

Efstidalur II is run by four siblings and their families. They recently took over the business from their parents that started and developed the concept with them as it is today. The siblings are the 7th generation living on the property but their family has been living on Efstidalur II since around 1750. They are dairy farmers first and foremost, but since 2002 the business has developed with increased tourism in the area. In 2013 they opened the restaurant and café and began to make their own products from their milk that they offer our guest to taste and enjoy.

HLÖÐULOFTIÐ RESTAURANT
Open(11:30 – 20/21:00)
Hlöðuloftið restaurant is a walk-in concept that offers so-called farm to table dining, which means that we produce our own dairy products and meat and get our vegetables from the surrounding farms. We focus on quality ingredients and delicious taste. Contact us for group menus.

Íshlaðan ice cream barn
Open (10:00-20:00)
We hope that everyone gets the chance to taste our organic and home-made ice cream. Made from our own cows, the ice cream is as fresh as it gets. Stop by the ice cream barn for a taste when driving around South Iceland – we promise you won’t regret it.

Efstidalur Horse Rental
Efstidalur is full of animals and all sorts of wildlife. You don’t have to walk far to see a whole host of animals all around the farm. From the family’s dog when you arrive, the cows in the barn overlooking the restaurant, or the horses running in the surrounding fields.

At Efstidalur you are able to get up close and personal with all the furry friends, especially the horses as we offer riding tours during the summer.

Bobby Fischer center

It houses memorabilia of the 11th World Chess Champion BOBBY FISCHER as well as the Selfoss Chess Club.

The American Bobby Fischer became the World Chess Champion when he defeated the Soviet grandmaster and reigning World champion Boris Spassky in Reykjavik in the summer of 1972. The match is generally referred to as the Match of the Century.

It took place at the height of the Cold War, mirroring the tense relations between the two superpowers, United States of America and the Soviet union. Since 1948 Soviet chess players had held the World championship title – uninterrupted for quarter of a century.

On display at the Bobby Fischer Center in Selfoss are among other things Spassky´s and Fischer´s scoresheets, a printout from the radiation measurements demanded by Spassky´s delegation after the 17th game and a replica of the chess board used during the match which was staged in Laugardalshöll in Reykjavik.

In addition many curious items related to Bobby Fischers s stay in Iceland during his last years ( 2005-2008 ), for example his chair from the antiquarian bookshop Bókin in Reykjavik. He died on 17th of January 2008 at the age of 64. Bobby Fischer´s final resting place is at Laugardælir cemetery a few hundred meters away from Bobby Fischer center.

In beautiful Hofsárdalur stands the old family farm Bustarfell, a quaint, centuries old Icelandic turf and stone house with red gables and a grass-grown roof. Bustarfell is one of the oldest and best preserved farms of this kind in Iceland. In 1532, the farm was bought by Árni Brandsson and his wife Úlfheiður. The farm has been owned by their descendants ever since.
A visit to the museum at Bustarfell is a journey through the history of farming and changes in lifestyle from the beginning of the 18th century to the mid-20th century. When walking through the museum you feel the inhabitants have only just left the house. Three kitchens from different eras are showcased, as well as other artifacts from around the farm which show how technology developed.

Open:
Summer, 1 June – 20 September: Every day from 10:00 – 17:00
Winter, 21 September – 31 May:
